Politics - Victoria

So there is no chance I'm voting for that cunt John Brumby but I'm still undecided who I should vote for.
Who is everybody else voting for and why? It is the same party as you will be choosing in the federal election?

Brumby seems to have the most corrupt "boys club" government for some time.
Can't see myself voting for him and his party, it does put me in a difficult postion.

Just vote for the pirate party, labor and liberal both have shitty leaders and the greens apart from their cool new drug policy will fuck up Australia even more.
We're going to have a shitty couple of years unless a miracle man comes in to play

I had a fair idea you wouldn't get many replies to this thread. Is there anyway you could construct a post that will post a bit of discussion?

Like, has an election been called yet? It's going to be this year right? Would the ALP want to get your state election out of the way before the next Federal election is called? Any interesting news articles you could post? Any whacky candidates running?

Can some one advise me of the key policy being put forward by the front running candidates in this election.

Past trends have indicated that Victoria has always been provided with a fair slice of the nations GST revenue, is this going to continue? Is either party considering any significant fiscal expansion within the state?

In case no one noticed, I'm in Sydney so I am not 100% across the situation down there, however, we will be looking at a state election very soon also and the key players in NSW are eerily similar to what is taking place in Melb over the last 3-5 years.

Any one else in NSW care to share the floor on the mess we have have in Macquarie Street at present?

Yeah I kind of hoped by being general people would build on it, plus I wanted to get other peoples opinions to base my own on.
That mining tax, really not sure if that's a good or bad thing...
Same with Vic, our state election should be pretty soon also where I would love to see Brumby lose his seat...

I would look into voting for the sex party. They have pretty cool policies. Also, each individual vote gives direct federal funding to the party so, the more votes, the more $$$ they get to move on up in the political world, and take it down from within in a good way! =D

The Policies

Censorship

Bring about the establishment of a truly national classification scheme which includes a uniform non-violent erotica rating for explicit adult material for all jurisdictions and through all media including the Internet and computer games.
Introduce an R and X rating for computer games

To overturn mandatory ISP filtering of the Internet and return Internet censorship to parents and individuals.

Education

To bring about the development of a national sex education curriculum as a first step in preventing the sexualisation of children.

Development of a national internet education scheme for parents.
Equality

To enact national anti discrimination laws which make it illegal to unfairly discriminate against people or companies on the basis of job, occupation, profession or calling.

To bring about equal numbers of women in the Parliament through enabling the Federal Discrimination Act to have jurisdiction extending to political parties.
To create total equal rights in all areas of the law for gay, lesbian and transsexuals.

Overturn racist laws that ban Aboriginal people from possessing erotic and sexual media in the Northern Territory.

Ensure the sexual rights and freedoms of people with a disability and the elderly.

Health

To enact national pregnancy termination laws along the same lines as divorce law — which allow for legal, no-fault and guilt-free processes for women seeking termination.

The listing of Viagra, Cialis and other drugs used to treat sexual dysfunction, on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

Overturn restrictions on aid to overseas family planning organisations that reference abortion.

Protection of Children

Convene a Royal Commission into child sex abuse in the nation’s religious institutions.

Develop global approaches to tackling child pornography which focus on detection and apprehension of the producers of the material.
Workplace Relations

Ensure that the introduction of paid maternity leave is fair and equitable for small businesses.

Abolish sex slavery and sexual servitude by introducing non morality-based immigration policies that allow bona-fide sex workers to work legally in Australia.

Other
Ending the tax exempt status for religions.

The way labor has attempted to destroy melbournes music scene has been appalling as well as there continued tough on drugs approach. The greens seem to be the best party for me and they look like they could pick up a few lower seats houses in the inner suburbs as well as extra upper house seats. I agree with alot of the policies of the pirate and sex parties but what are there policies on other issues such as public transport, liquor liscencing, drug laws etc. I'm alittle wary after seeing Nick Xenophon rise to power in SA on issues like reducing pokies, more accountability in government but then finding out once he was voted in that he is strictly anti drugs and lobbied the government to crack down on pill testing, etc. At least the greens have all of their policies and positions on anything you could imagine detailed on their website and actually stick to them.

^ So has the Labor government specifically targeted the Melbourne music scene or is it a negative by-product of other government initiatives?

^ no specific targeting - but there has been far too much support for rampant development without any consideration of the consequences. So edgy suburbs like Collingwood and Fitzroy get ritzed up like crazy (like King St Newtown late 80s onwards), the gentry move in then start whinging when their beauty sleep is disturbed by honest-to-goodness rawk. No bands with drums at the Empress!! (since relaxed)

The fuss around the Tote is largely fluff - sure the licensing laws got a bit tough but it's back in action now.

The Punters was a loss - but that was just a business decision reflecting the more well-heeled clientele in the area. The pizzas are yummy and it didn't hurt as much as losing Max's in Petersham to pokies. Maybe I'm just a snob and getting old...

As for party politics - the greens are solid - good policies and a proven commitment to democratic processes. They walk the talk. Labor has it all on paper but are number crunchers - they will always take the most expedient action and are far too chummy with big business ("The third way" 80 ). Liberal of course are a joke...

When you put it in that context I completely understand what you mean. We are still facing those types of issues in Sydney

Think I may hate this government more than the Kennet one, if that's possible, so it's an "Anyone but Labor" vote for me.

^I'm pretty unhappy with Bracks/Brumby - but that's mainly because Labor should be more onto social justice issues and less in the pocket of big business. Liberal would be worse, simply because their entire platform is based on a faulty understanding of how the world works, and they've got a vested interest in not questioning that.

No matter who you vote for, the government always gets in :(

vote for extremists,
whoever disturbs the status quo as much as possible.
it's heavily controlled by people behind the politicians.
if you push the right buttons, curtain drops and system revealed.

I always vote racist and socialist.
This is because I know immigration is bullshit, and income inequality keeps rising.
It's also not what rich want. Not that they're all jewish, but they hate all solidarity of any form outside a very tight social order.

my opinion: study politics to figure out how shit is controlled, why and who does it.
then you will know how to vote to fuck these people up
democracy is a failed project because the masses are easy to lead,
in a couple of decades, if still alive, you may wish you were in Russia or Turkey,
they're not democratic, but the future may surprise you

I always go greens, I might put the sex party second. They seem interesting

.. it would be awsome if there were a Bluelight party to vote for

Just a quick reminder to everyone that (if necessary) you need to enrol to vote, or update your enrolment address as soon as possible. Also please encourage any friends, siblings etc who aren't enrolled but eligible to get off their arses and do so! :) As far as I'm concerned you forfeit any right to complain about our governemnt if you're too lazy to vote when given the opportunity.

If you are not enrolled to vote:
•you must complete an enrolment form right now and return it to the AEC by 8pm (local time) Monday, 19 July 2010.

If you are already enrolled to vote but haven’t updated your address details on the electoral roll:
•complete a new enrolment form and return it to the AEC by 8pm (local time) Thursday 22 July 2010.

To check your enrolment details: https://oevf.aec.gov.au/

To find your electorate: http://apps.aec.gov.au/esearch/Default.aspx

For those who haven't voted before you can typically find voting stations set up at most local schools, churches halls etc but it's worth checking where your closest one is a few days prior to the election :)

Will there be a meetup near the First Aid room around 1am?
I'll be the one with the blue glowsticks.

Oh wait.....wrong event..... ;)

Remember kids...VOTE!

I have $10 on the coalition at $3.90 to win.

Unfortunately I can't vote as not a citizen. It's time like this I wish I was! Might have to bite the bullet and become naturalised in time for the next one.
