My Little Experiment - Purifying "molly" (with GC/MS data)

Regardless of how meticulous the process is, can this be completed with some basic chemistry knowledge + equipment? I see that you mentioned a vacuum dryer.

Either way, it's really cool that you actually went out of your way to GSMC your sample and attempt a purification, imo.

Its not a difficult process to remove caffeine although its comething i would consider very dangerous and should not be attemted by anyone other than a chemist or studying chemistry.

Removing anything more than that is difficult.

Frankly, apart from as the OP said...............the nerd value...............its a waste of time and money.

If you sih to klnow m,ore then feel free to discuss it in the ADD area.

Its not the right sort of discussion for ED.

@Mazdan

The nerd factor is exactly it.

I'm sure that in terms of long term effects and the potency of your roll, a little caffeine and precursor garbage isn't going to do anything to you.

But for me, the effect that I would get from looking at my crystals and knowing that it is quantitatively 90-something percent pure would give me a boner.

I think that there's some utility to it -- being able to more accurately measure your dose of MDMA is surely much safer than hoping that your friendly neighborhood pill presser put the right amount of E in the mix.

I do agree with MazDan that this is beyond the ability of the target audience of ED to accomplish safely. No matter how easy it may be, someone, somewhere is going to end up drinking acetone. :\

Props to using your lab. Here's a question for you do you know of many free spectrum databases that have mdma, mda, etc.... I have hplc's to use but no masspec (well i cant use it) so just wondering if you might know.

I don't know of any free ones, and it's not because I haven't looked. All the free databases conveniently leave these compounds out.

Something of interest....I tested another batch of molly from a friend, 50% MDMA, the other 50% MSM, a dietary supplement used to treat osteoarthritis. Weird...

more than weird...it's scary.

I imagine that would show up clean with a test kit, but some people might have very bad reactions to certain things that are even readily available over the counter...

Question for Metcalf:

Did the original material you tested have any insoluble mass left over when you dissolved it in ethanol? In my experience, "molly" often contains residual solid that will not dissolve in several organic solvents (and sometimes not in water either). Since GC/MS will obviously not pick up insoluble/non-volatile impurities, my experience in purity testing usually starts with a weight/weight ratio of solubles/insolubles before looking at solution compositions.

I've seen street samples as impure as ~65% soluble (organic + aqueous) with the rest being insoluble material (my guess being made up of anything like alumina/boron salts or random polymers)

@JBrandon: I would agree that caffeine isn't likely to harm anyone, but an assortment of random chemical precursors, even present in low amounts, might have serious negative effects (short and/or long term). Especially for users that take high doses and use often. Not trying to criticize you here -> I'm just saying that it's not a risk I would be willing to take.

I have a pdf with forensic references for a lot of drugs of abuse, PM me...

MDA btw has peaks at 44 and 136, MDMA has peaks at 58, 77 and 135
