Music you grew up to...

This is pretty similar to an old thread here in NEMD. I really hate to merge threads, cuz I like to encourage everyone to post whatever they feel like. But sometimes, if you don't merge them, both threads kinda end up getting forgotten about. So I hope you don't mind and continue to post. :)

isnt this thread also similar enough to merge?

^Yeah, I guess it is boss. ;)

I was lookin' at that one at the time actually. But as I said, I really detest merging. But as it is fairly similar, we may as well merge and get the best of everything all in one.

The Beatles and all kinds of other classic rock through my dad. Hated it at the time, mostly just to spite him. Love it now. First music I really got into on my own was AC/DC then moved on to Zeppelin. The rest is history.

^ I've only recently listened to Led Zepp albums for first time! I just never got around to it before but I'm glad I've put that right.

I grew up with a lot of mainstream 60s music from my parents, Beach Boys, Beatles, etc. But I first really got into music of my own with the early 90s rave scene.

Something I should confess though, my first 7" single was a Sam Fox record, Hold on Tight. I can't believe I'm spilling the beans about that!

Can't remember first album but It would have been either of Jeff Wayne's War of The Worlds, REM Green or The Wall.

I got a little too into rave as I remember pretending not to like Nirvana when they appeared, when inside I fucking loved it. I don't care what I listen to now. If it's good, nothing else matters. As it should be.

I have to mention The Doors who I got into during rave era.

The Doors - Wild Child

Wither it be through your parents, siblings, grandparents or other elders, what music were you introduced to early in life? Have your feelings about the music you were introduced to in childhood changed? And, how do you think this has effected your taste in music now?

(I just thought of this thread so I don't have time to respond right away as I think this will be a lengthy reply but I wanted to get it up before I forgot. :))

My mother played music to me from when I was in her belly- and I like the music she played still :) (Except The Rolling Stones)

My parents like Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Beethoven, Pearl Jam, Porno for Pyros, Madonna........I'm trying to remember- some stuff they liked I don't was.....um,George Michael , Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul (though I liked them in the 80's)- They also liked Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, R.E.M., UB40, um.....what else?
My parents loved music and at one point had their music library inventoried and had over 500 CD's.......
Them being so open to music and playing it so much I guess influenced me in the way that I was always pretty open to music and it has always been a passion <3

I refer to these as "school bus songs," because, well I grew up hearing them all the time on the bus ride to school.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Under the Bridge
Stone Temple Pilots- Interstate Love Song

My music was the 90's....grew up with Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Soundgarden/STP/Smashing pumpkins and all the rest.
I also got to hear OK Computer(one of the greatest albums all time in my book) when I was starting to experiment a bit more...must have been like hearing Dark Side of the Moon for the first time.

Dad Rock: My dad listened to a lot of Elton John, Dire Straits, Neil Diamond, Wings. He also had a Presidents of the United States album that we played a lot. He had Sgt Peppers, which is the first Beatles album that I became familar with.

Pop Trash?: When I first got into high school I liked what was on the pop radio (two of my favourite songs were Blue by Eiffel 65 and The Bad Touch by Bloodhound Gang. That might sound funny to you, but I can still see what I liked in these tracks today. I was drawn to the swirling melodic electronic sounds.) I had a lot of '100% Hits' compliations and whatever.

Hip Hop!: Then like halfway through high school it was ALL ABOUT hip hop. Hip hop was pretty popular with a lot of the guys at school at that time. I had already been into Eminem for a while, but his Eminem Show album came out and I listened to it a lot. What's funny was that I got my dad into that album, and he loved it. Then 50 Cent come out, G-Unit, I'd be listening to old Snoop and N.W.A. and Dre. There was even a phase when Lil Jon was all the rage. Then I started getting into Nas, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Tribe Called Quest, etc. More 'meaningful', 'conscious' hip hop I guess.

At the end of high school and just after it I was pretty into dance music for a bit.

I still have a special place for hip hop and dad rock and cheesey synthy dance tunes.

It musn't have been until about the late 90s that I began taking interest in music, around when I was 12 or so but even then I didn't really go discover new bands. Just Top of the Pops and Chart Show on Radio 1. Something I wish I had when these days I spend a good couple of hours finding new music fairly regularly.

I think the band that really sparked my interest was Pink Floyd, my Dad had put them on whilst we were in the car one day and I've loved 'em ever since. Went to see the Australian Pink Floyd Experience with the old man just last year - every bit as good as floyd themselves in many ways! The Who was another one he introduced me to which we both liked. Oh and I can't forget my Dad's obsession with the Shadows, a great band if you put aside any connections with Cliff ;)

When I got to secondary school around 2000, we listened to a lot of rap and r'n'b that was around at the time. Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent & Dr Dre stick out in my memory... I can't even remember much of the r'n'b. Then there was a phase where everyone in school listened to Limp Bizkit, Deftones, RATM, SOAD etc.

And eventually, I drifted back towards Pink Floyd and things like Radiohead, Coldplay, RHCPs, Nirvana. I might not have started listening to music properly until after the 90s, but that's what I feel I grew up with all the same even if it was after the fact :)

I grew up in the 80's/90's...so I listened to a lot of R&B - Bel Biv Devoe, Boyz II Men, Joe Public, TLC, Bobby Brown, New Edition, Colour Me Bad, Silk, SWV, Dru Hill, MASE, Blackstreet etc etc...um, suffice to say my tastes have changed somewhat over the years. I had a pretty scary stint with garage and 2-step along the line too...

My parents also played a lot of Phil Collins, Boney M, UB40, Bon Jovi, Europe, Roxette, Led Zepellin, Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart...Abba :!

^ Oh man, TLC.

I remember riding in my mom's Thunderbird with her and her putting on Dark Side of the Moon when I was only 5 or 6.
Man I was blown away to say the least.

She would sing and I would watch her, I remember thinking she was the coolest

She also loved Stevie Ray Vaughn and Zeppelin, John Mellencamp and The Doors.
I knew good music at a very young age.

Oh and something totally different we would listen to besides old rock would be Patsy Cline.
She grew up to her mother singing it to her :]

Dad Rock: My dad listened to a lot of Elton John, Dire Straits, Neil Diamond, Wings.

I forgot U2. U2 was one of the most played. I remembered because I heard on the radio that it's Bono's birthday today. :)

There was also a lot of Australian dad rock I forgot to mention, like Paul Kelly, Hoodoo Gurus, Australian Crawl, Hunters and Collectors, Cold Chisel,
