Music you grew up to...

I grew up hearing my dad play nothing but pure, classic rock. I remember falling alseep to hearing only the beginnings of songs as he skipped through albums to make his mix tapes, lol.

I still love classic rock, and I have almost every one of my dad's massive cd collection uploaded on iTunes, and even though I've progressed more into metal now, classic rock is still special to me.

My mum and dad told me a story quite recently about when I was a baby. Apparently my dad used to sit me infront of our stereo player when I wasn't even old enough to crawl. He'd play me Pink Floyd albums and said that I liked to watch the lights on the equaliser go up and down. This might explain my love of music today :D

There was always music being played around the house when I was a kid. In fact, I can't remember a time when there wasn't some kind of music being played. There are certain songs or bands that remind me of different things tho. For instance-

60's music was always played when my parents had friends over to play cards. So when ever I hear songs like 'It Might Aswell Rain Untill September' by Carole King, I'm instantly transported back in time. Anything by Dusty Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Supremes, Dionne Warwick etc has the same effect.

Tracks that remind me of being a kid

Video Killed The Radio Star-The Buggles
Chain Reaction-Diana Ross
Walk Like An Egyptian-The Bangles
Africa-Toto
Turning Japanese-The Vapors
Pump It Up-Elvis Costello
Running Up That Hill-Kate Bush
Life's What You Make It-Talk Talk
Down Under-Men At Work
A Horse With No Name-America
Time After Time-Cyndi Lauper
Why Dya Do It?-Marianne Faithfull (not a good song to be familiar with as a kid. If you've heard the lyrics you'll know what I mean =D )
(Don't Fear) The Reaper-Blue Oyster Cult
Don't You (Forget About Me)-Simple Minds
Wordy Rappinghood-Tom Tom Club

My mum has never really been that into music, so my dad always made up for the two of them. I always remember my dad blasting out, Ian Dury, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads (I remember him being drunk and flapping about on the floor to 'Once In A Lifetime' on one occasion. Pretending he was in the video), Tom Tom Club, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix and a lot of John Lee Hooker was played.

An extremely broad variety.
Blues such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Otis Redding, The Big Bopper.
Classic rock n roll such as Buddy Holly, Elvis, The Eagles, The Beatles, Hendrix, Rolling Stones
Rockabilly such as the Cramps, as well as gothic pop like Siousixe etc.
My father was also a dance music nut, used to organise gay dance parties in Melbourne (he wasn't gay, just into the scene which originated from gay parties) so sometimes he would play early 90s house and techno, which I would often complain about, as well as Underworld, The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Pete Tong etc. I later grew to love dance music and my father is a major influence because of this.

I used to sit next to the old record player my parents had, and look through their weird musical tastes. The earliest music I remember was billy joel. I listened to him all the time. My mom got me to like Elton John as well.

Those were my first remembered artists.
When I was in my young teenaged years I started by listening to crap, as we all did, but I think music changed for me when i bought "make yourself" by incubus (which was probably my third cd). I started to appreciate the music more, and I developed my tastes from that point.

I tend to listen to music in stages... certain times of year i tend to listen to different music. I get into metal a little bit in winter. Indie is all the time, but it dominates the spring. I love listening to punk music in the summer. I've spread out my musical tastes so far, i listen to literally everything.

from my dad i listened to - Oldies
From mom- AC/DC Quiet Riot Jimmy Buffet and lots of country
From my brother i got Korn Bone thugs Tupac nirvana and easy e

Now i listen to a very wide variety of music.... but mostly diff forms of rock music. Rap and country when im in strange moods.

From the time I was a toddler until about 5th grade I always woke up to my parents playing: The Beatles, INXS, U2, Dire Straits, Bob Marley, Sting and what have you on the stereo at home. Oh and my mom absolutely loved the soundtrack to that one movie with Tom Hanks, Philadelphia.

When I got to be a great big ol' 6th grader (when my parents began giving me a ride to school) my mom played popular radio, I especially remember: The Cranberries, The Cardigans, The Wallflowers, Everlast, David Matthews... most of which I was OK with and what would later become some of my favorite bands: Sublime, Jane's and the Chili Peppers (though I didn't know it at the time)

And I remember being introduced to Led Zeppelin via LZII on my father and I's first roadtrip to Yosimite to mountain bike. That trip must have been between 4th and 7th grade, not quite sure.

As long as I can remember we vacationed with my mom's brother and his family. My Uncle Dave was an absolute die-hard classic rock fan. He introduced me to Jimi, Blue Oyster Cult, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Clapton... that sort of stuff.

So... overall some good music, and some pretty lame music too. Considering my dad also used to listen to quite a bit of Garth Brooks (gag) I remain pissed off I had to discover Pink Floyd on my own.

I grew up listening to grunge such as bush, smashing pumpkins and nirvana . Everytime I hear it now I think of when I was a kid and get all nostalgic. Oh yeah I also heard alot of rap when growing up(GOOD rap not the shit that they play now). Nowadays I listen to mostly death metal, industrial, psytrance and breakcore.

My dad used to freakin love Bob Seiger. I had most of his songs memorized by the time I was 7.I remember when me and my dad would be riding somewhere in the car and he'd be listening to Bob Seiger and that song 'Against the Wind' would come on,i'd always sing it but i'd change it to 'Breaking Wind'.That used to piss my dad off. LOL!

What era did you grow up in and what music did you like?

Basically what I'm asking is what decade you grew up in and what musical fads did you get into when you were younger, say 13-21.......8)

I grew up in the 80's, and I really liked heavy metal for a long time. My first album was Kiss Destroyer(yes, I meant actual album made of vinyl). I was about 11 or 12 then though. I liked Sabbath(first concert in '82), Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest(for some reason), AC/DC, early Metallica and other heavy metal/hard rock acts..... I actually owned Back in Black on vinyl, 8 track, and cassette!:X

Then when I was like 17, I started getting into classic rock as well as hard rock.;)

Now my musical tastes have become much more broad and varied, but I still listen to the occasional metal band.........just not very often!=D

What about you?

Child of the 90's... my mom played Michael Jackson all of the time, so I hqve those memories...

I used to LOVE NKOTB when I Was in elementary school (I was a chorus member and very good singer back then)

Started listening to hip-hop when I was probably 11/12 and fell absolutely in love. I had posters from Rap Pages all throughout my room... my parents weren't too happy (I'm a white kid from the burbs, bu tI dont care to this day what they think or say.

My dad wantedto get my a gift for my birthday one year... prolly 1993 when Das Efx's second album came out....

But he saw the title "Straight up Sewaside" and thought it was about suicide... THERE ISNT EVEN A PARENTAL ADVISOEY STICKER ON IT!!!

Anyhoo, I bought it myself....

When I hit 16, I started listening to Dave Matthews Band and Phish... started touring with Phish for a few summers... selling grilled cheese and alcohol...

Always kept up with hip-hop and learned the knowledge and history....

Fell in love with the blues when I was 21 (I heardan organic chemistry teacher from Skidmore College in Saratoga, NY play "Kind Hearted WOman," by Robert Johnson, at an open mic night and it BLEW MY FUCKING MIND.

After that, I read as much as I could about Robert Johnson and the blues in general...

Then I found Jeff Beck..... wow....

Much more to say and missed some of the progression, but you sort of get the point....

Radiohead came in way too late in my life... prolly when I was 23.. I wish earlier....

grew up listening to the original dixieland jazz band, al jolson (that cat could swing), duke ellington, art tatum, bix biederbecke, fats waller, et al

seems like just yesterday.

During the late 80's I listened to everything on MTV, and probably liked it all. My older brother had a wide range of music, from Poison to Circle Jerks to Suicidal Tendencies to Ozzy Osbourne.
Then in the early 90's, my personal favorite era, it was all about underground independent music with styles varying from post punk to avant garde/experimental; all along, I always enjoyed pretty much all the pop music as well.

In the late 90's to early 2000's I got into Electronic Breakbeat Dance musix.

I pretty much like all music.

Except the really heavy metals. And monotonous, pounding techno.
