just saw my first patch of goldies / cubes. they were only tiny and not the healthiest looking but it's a start :) yeee ha

The potency definitely decreases as the shrooms get bigger along with many many other factors like mentioned above. What happens is the psylocibin/cin etc grows for a certain amount of time until the shrooms matures. The actives are not being produced but the shrooms are still growing in size.

The best time to pick shrooms is when the cap breaks off the veil. Aborts are always going to be the most potent. During my mycology times back in the day we made few experiments. We did not allow the shrooms to full mature, infact we stunted the growth in numerous ways so that the shroom (or should I say pin) remained the same size but kept on producing its actives. Boy were they potent:)

Forgive me if my slightly intoxicated mind that hasn't actively picked mushrooms for a couple years is making an error here. But I am pretty damn certain that in terms of the primary Southern Australian psychoactive mushroom one would be picking (Psilocybe Subaeruginosa,) there is no veil left on an even relatively mature mushroom. Infact, a veil seperate from the mushroom cap (iirc they call it an annular ring?) is a sign that one is looking at a Galerina as opposed to a Psilocybe. I do realise that the term veil can refer to the cap of the mushroom still being in contact with the stem, whether or not the mushroom will display an annular ring after this breaks is a different story. I just want to clarify terminology so that nobody takes a veil/annular ring to be a sign that they are looking at the goods, when where I come from that is quite a dangerous connection to make.

When referring to the cap breaking the veil, IME simply refers to the time when the mushroom is ready to drop spores. It's not something you really look for when hunting wild species and is only used in the cultivation of mushrooms.

^ I agree generally speaking, but I do also think it is worthwhile to clear up any ambiguity in a HR thread that may encourage otherwise inexperienced people to pick wild mushrooms. Whilst I have managed to pick literally thousands of psychoactive mushrooms over the years, the dangers of an amateur picking wild mushrooms for recreational purposes cannot really be overstated and it is better to be too specific than not specific enough. :)

got to agree with mentor. veils are used to identify mushrooms. the galerina/sub comment was spot on, but this applies to various species. veil remnants i guess, if you want to be pedantic about it. But, generally, the presence of a veil on matured and opened psilocybe lookalikes (meaning, species that grow in Victoria) is a dead giveaway. the spots on top of amanita muscaria are veil remnants, also. again, this is an identifying feature.

i'm fucking running out, somehow!

first season in a decade, i have run through my supplies.

giving away my last couple of ounces tonight.

looking forward to the next (REAL) season.

It's been raining a bit, now its stinking hot, the season is right, the fields have had cows in - heading out on a hunt today - wish me luck.

Wtf, isn't it far too hot for shrooms? I've moved to Sydney recently and the only times I've been hunting (very successfully) was near Melbourne but in the middle of the year when it's pissing down all the time and cold. So is the situation completely different in NSW? Do the shrooms up here grow this late in the year?

*Puts shroom-hunting cap on*
