Mushroom season 2010

I will find the biggest sub I can and then beat you with it :p

What's yours is mine unless it is on private property ;)

I'm not out to rip any patches, I personally prefer to hunt well away from Melbourne's chemical and heavy metal filled gardens. I just want to be amongst the fruiting bodies after so many dreams in recent weeks

Be careful where you pick your mushrooms, they are sponges for any toxins that may be in the grow medium. I cringe when I see people hunting under storm water drains and beside highly polluted railway lines...

I like to venture way into the bush where the presence of heavy metals and other chemicals is much less likely

As a first time hunter (going with people who know what's what), I know what to look for in terms of conditions and actual shrooms, but is there anything I can look for in the landscape that will point me in the direction of a find?

Other than the normal cow shit, pine trees, leaf litter etc.

For subs you want rotting woodchips, pine needles, bark etc (note, fresh woodchips wont support growth so find older chipped beds)

Cow shit shrooms are warmer climate shrooms such as cubensis and cyanescens which grow in nth nsw/s.e qld during their wet season.

You do not need to hunt in cow pastures in melbourne

This time of the year (early season) it's best to look for low lying areas where the water flows too and also shaded areas that will retain moisture better than open areas will.

That's all there is to it.

The subaeruginosa mycelium will either be there or it wont. If you look in places with the above conditions you will likely come across a nice haul.

Remember it is early days and many people are only reporting actives in some patches in small to medium amounts. Don't get turned off if you don't find any and places you check now may be flushed in a couple of weeks but aren't currently holding enough moisture

Good luck

thankyou, my new guardian, for finding me that link on blue staining bolets. it certainly has identified the shroom.

it could very well be another species or genus, there are quite a few in the 'Bolete' family (the genera Boletus, Boletellus, Pulveroboletus etc all have species that share the same bluing reaction).

it did not taste toxic at all.,

The first link above tells the story of a 'cautious' mushroom hunter who ate a fatal dose of a amatoxin containing Lepiota, he fried 30 of the suckers up and i bet they smelt and tasted quite good too.

The second link contains this little tidbit:

*Poisonous Amanita species have been reported to taste very good - by those who survived to report.

and amatoxins take 6-12 hours before any ill effects are felt, by which time your liver and kidneys are pretty much ruined.

Sorry if you feel I came down like a ton o bricks on you but you really gotta know what you're up against when you decide to try random fungi. Safe hunting mate.
Now , on with the subs ...

Went for a pick out in the mountains today, not much rain recently but the cold mornings must of helped.

happy hunting :D

i tried to PM this to you psiolo, but your PMbox is full. alas the whole bl mushroomer will get to hear it, which is probably ok.

yeah look, i regret everything that happened in the passed 72 hours.
since finding the cyans, or subs, in the mountains last sunday i have been a bit out of it, and i tend to get caught up in fantasies od my own making.

with regards the u-turn remark, it was more about your response change from "nice find", in a previous, friendly and helpfull post, to then be dittoing this guy lampooning me as an idiot.

i guess i got a bit offended or something.

however i cant blame you, for that response, especially as a moderator of this forum, and this site being HR related etc etc.
and regardless of those reasons, i deserved to be ticked offf.

i did think this mushroom character could have refrained from insulting me, and maybe took a more tactfull response, as i dont think that response would have been very helpfull to anyone in a situation where a dangerous poison may have just been ingested.

feel me?

i actually had thought that "mushroom", would have been a higher up mod, than yourself. i noticed the join date, and thought right, someone in the organisation that has been there for ages and maybe has the obilty to create avatars for this very purpose has felt, that i was in need of a kick in the head and that they better do it soon, before too many kids actually start believin some of the "irrational" stuff i regurgitate with seemingly more and more regularity.

have allways enjoyed your comments on shrooms and dmt and other psychedelics etc.

i shall endevour to reign in my long and arduous speels on whatever i get a roll on. as i realize these pages are not a social chat room.

i hope we can go forward from this point.

my apologies again psilo.

@ mused, mate i know nothing of sydneys mushies, cuz the closest i ever picked them was the blue mountains. that said, keep an eye on katoombas weather and go up ther any time after a bit of rain and follow the hippies to the public patches, or just go lookin.

i have seen them growing in gardens in the main street of nearby villages and in the main tourist points. just go on a touro stroll mate and you could have a really nice day.

they are ther right now in smaller numbers but in the next two months or so, they will take off as we get rains.

see coming pics for todays little score.

Nice post, and I think its good in the public forum. Everyone should be seeing that, to help see that whilst you know you made a mistake you stand by mushroom being a bit out of line with the extent of his post. I feel ya

Party SAFE. =D

Thanks for that psynap

No hard feelings mate

I have had a very busy inbox recently and just cleared some out and PM'd you

I will be clearing out all posts not related to mushroom picking on Sunday but for now I will leave them up

Let's keep this thread peaceful guys

This has been one of the busiest Aus DD threads for many years because of the quality of posts and everyone's love for the mushroom

PLUR :)

hey thanks student, and everyone that has shown concern.
and thanks mushroom, as the links provided have certainly opened my eyes.

i am in the mounts for a few days workin, and i noticed there are little ones everywhere, but only in solitary, or small groups.
have decided, after the last few days fun and games, to just leave them to spore, and hope for a bigger flush with decent rain.

however, as i now have a new nikon DSLR to play with and get to know, snapped a few for y'all.
