Mushie Hunting Season 2003

Dont fret to much skinlab as I know a guy that has found them in Australian bush land amounst bark etc

Does anyone have pictures of the dangerous mushrooms that look similar to mm's? Are there definitive ways of telling the difference?

I've found the main ones that can look simular (although often look a lot redder) are Stropharia Aurantiaca, look them up for pics.
These will make you shit water for days.

Galerina as well - Can differentiate as the stem is similar colour to the cap or underside of the cap and usually dont have an umbo (little nipple on top of cap). Subs stems are usually white and quite thick. I think these are poisonus

and Coprinus micaceus- look up pics again :)

the main difference is, only the subs stain blue!

WARNING: I have an unidentified shroom that is nearly identical to p. subs. (im sure its non hulucinogenic)
I have see a few recently and nearly picked some thinking they where p. subs.!!! Ive been picking mushrooms for 2 years now so I dont have that Im that experienced but it is easy to mistake them. I will try to get a friend to take a photo and I will post it here for you all to ogle.

Dj ScAtTeRfAcE: Drying the shrooms aint that labour intensive->
Take some paper towling cut stems of and lay the shrooms out on the towle with the gills down. Leave in doors preferably in non damp area. (I find that high shelfs work, as at this time of year most people have heating and heat rises.......)

god damn, so much for having a national park behind my house, its useless then!

hehe im in the same boat, i've spent plenty of time looking around sydney, and it's tough. that's not to say you wont be successful, but it's hard! take a drive out to the blue mountains if possible. woodchip beds. that is all :p

as for lookalikes, yes i've seen p. sub lookalikes ... there are simple ways to ID them, however. pretty much every sub will bruise blue DEEPLY... bruise the gills or scratch the stem and wait a few minutes or more. almost all the sub's i found already had hints of blue bruising, perhaps on small bits of damage made to the cap from the environment, generally plenty on the stem and around the edges of the gills as well.

the gills should be tan to brown, tho they vary in colour so this isn't a definite way to ID. gills are also generally crowded, altho p. eucalypta (possibly a variant of subaeruginosa, but which also seems quite rare) has fairly distant gills.

if you're unsure then it probably isn't a sub! if you have blue bruising, and it looks right but u still want to be sure, make a spore print. cut off the stem close to the gills from a fresh mushroom, place it gills down on a blank piece of paper and leave it overnight... the spores should collect on the piece of paper. if the spores are a chocolatey brown, it bruises blue and is macroscopically the same as a p.sub, then it is a psilocybe.

also, with drying, i've read and been told from many sources that the cheapest and most appropriate way to dry is - fan dry for 24 hours, then place in a container with damprid until cracker dry... this should only take a few days :) if you have a food dehydrator, then this may work also. don't use heat! make sure that they are cracker dry!

cheers,
jimbu

hehe another question:

If i go picking and cut the stems (to leave the bottom part of the stem)... how long would it take for them to re-grow on average. If it was a cold night the next night would they be there again the next morning, or does it take more rain?

Feedback would be muich appriciated :)

The lookalikes I have found have kind of pattern of stripes radiating from the centre of the cap that is rather easy to identify. Whereas subs seem to have a more solid colour on the cap, with no patterning. I'm assuming these lookalikes are the Galerina DJ Scatterface is talkin about. I can now usually differentiate them by look, but these ones don't stain AT ALL. This is the easy identifier. Also, the stems are rather thin, and also as DJ Scatface said, are similar in colour to the gills.

Here are a few pics for the google-challenged..

oh another thing - sub's are hydrophanus, which means they change colour as they dry... if you find sub's fresh they will be a darker brown and most likely have light brown patches around the sides already depending on how dry they are.

scatterface - they aren't going to grow back on the same stems... cut the stems as far down as you can without disturbing the mycelium underneath... the stems have just as much % psilocybin and psilocin in them as the caps. you'll prolly have to wait for more rainfall before they will fruit again.

Can anyone help me identify these mushies - Melbourne

I have been researching Magic mushies recently and decided to go out and pick some. After spending about three hours in twon seperate parks with a mate we found lotsa mushrooms, but none that fitted the descrption of p.subs. Ironically I found some that did fit the description in my next door neighbours nature strip.

I found them growing in wet tanbark mulch, there were about 30 of them. They range from about an inch in height to about three inches is height, the stems are white are thin and kinda spindly. The tops are a golden brown colour (similar to toasted bread) and are about the sizes of a 10 to 20c piece. They are domed and the centre of the dome is kinda like a girl's nipple. There are off white coloured gills underneath. I crushed the tops and gills of one of them and it bruised a blue/greeny blue colour. Also, there were a few which looked the same but had the tops of them almost turning inside out, but I didn't pick any of those. I am by know means wanting to take them at the moment because I know the risks, but if I could get a few opinions from some experienced shroomers that would be really helpful. Thanks!

By now they should all have some (sometimes it's only a small section) bruising on the stem or cap. They sound like subs... the stems aren't really thin and hollow are they? Cos sub stems aren't too thin and are pretty strong. Anyway don't take my word for it... get a photo and if not possible do a spore print :) I just did a spore print and unlike any other shroom it's a clear purple (or purply brown) colour for the subs. To do a spore print just cut the stem as close to the cap as possible and place the cap (gills down) on a white peice of printing paper or paper towel. Leave for a good few hours (ovrenight preferbly).

P.s- get a lot more info b4 indulging

possibly p. subaeruginosa - possibly the australiana variant...

but don't eat them unless you're 100% sure which you're not...

do you have access to a digital camera? if not, do a search on google or the shroomery and learn how to describe mushrooms!

once you've got the photos, post them here or on the shroomery's hunting forums and you should be able to get a good idea (as long as the photos are clear!) take photos of the cap, the gills, where the gills join to the cap, etc... some mushrooms are harder to ID than others...

No digital camera unfortunately. The stems aren't really hollow as such, it's just that they are no thicker that a pen, but they are solid. I'll do a spore print. I've looked up some pictures and found that some p.subs have thicker stems and others don't, i dunno if this is variation of the species or what.

By the way, what is the worst that can happen if they are just lookalikes? Are there any known blue bruising p.sub lookalikes that cause liver failure or anything, or do they generally give you the shits and a stomach ache?

They do sound like P. Subs. even the ones you left behind. If they had blue staining they probly are, some Subs. I have seen have had very much "upturned" caps.

Please dont eat them with checking with someone first though.

MY ADDVICE:
1-Take photos of the area to picked them in.
2-Take photos of the fresh mushrooms
3-Dry the mushrooms and keep them in an airtight container
4-Find someone who knows there mushrooms... so to speek
5-Either eat or throw away on the opinion of this "expert"

ok, well the stems can be thin or thick... sub's have a tendancy to be very varying in looks! was there any blue bruising apparent, especially on the stem or perhaps around the outer edge of the gills BEFORE you picked them? if they're not dry, try scratching the stem a fair bit.... leave it for a few minutes or longer and see if it bruises... it should bruise fairly strongly. in my experience with a fresh sub, it bruises VERY VERY strongly blue almost to blue-black after a while!

your description does sound quite right, but i can't be sure! i'd advise you on finding someone who knows what they're looking for!

the worst that can happen - is death. :\ although i am not aware of any lookalikes that bruise blue and grow in woodchips in australia.

almost all of the specimens i collect already have blue bruising somewhere, whether it be on the stem or lightly on parts of the cap, perhaps where it has been damaged by a twig or something.

Re: What mushie season?!?

I found hundreds and hundreds on one field alone in this area... You just have to find a good field.. Mostly in Jan/Feb when it rained a bit on the Coastal NSW/QLD border

We had sweetfuckall mushies in the SE QLD area this past season... probably because it only rained twice all summer and now its too cold for them...:p you lucky temperate weather mushie hunters:\

Cheers!

This is inspiring me to get off my arse and go and do a bit of a mushie hunt, given that the weather around here has been perfect for shrooms for about the past week, I'm going to berate myself if I don't at least go and look.

Now all I have to do is dry out the shoes I left outside in the rain so I can go...

;)

yay blue meanies have arrived nz

well i went out for my first official hunt of the past few seasons. Our supposed expert decided he would go to work so we were left with a car load of people that couldnt tell one shroom from another. But with a bit of reading and speaking to certain friends and about 6 hours wandering around the forest getting all wet we found some. Fuck it. we found heaps ha ha ha.
tell you what though our blue meanies dont stain blue.
they are kinda small, and grey/green colour with a blueish glow to them but no colour change from bruising whatsoever. so your best option is to go with someone who knows what their looking for.
problem is these ones are very different to other shrooms i have seen in the past so there must be many different species of psilocybes in my neck of the woods, but these certainly are strong.
made tea out of about 30 small shrooms, gave quarter each of the brew to some friends and have frozen the rest for a rainy day. The friends were happily surprised an hour or so later with zany text messages sent.
so if anyone from nz is there give me a post so we can compare our thoughts.
