ATF allegedly encouraged U.S. gun sales to Mexican drug traffickers -- Now there's evidence other agencies knew about program

By Sharyl Attkisson

(CBS News) WASHINGTON - South of El Paso, Texas, on Mexico's side of the border, lies Juarez - the most dangerous city in the world. CBS News investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports ATF Special Agent Rene Jaquez has been stationed there for the past year, trying to keep U.S. guns from being trafficked into Mexico.

"That's what we do as an agency," Jaquez said. "ATF's primary mission is to make sure that we curtail gun trafficking."

...........

Jaquez is so opposed to the strategy, he's speaking out. "You don't let guns walk. I've never let a gun walk."

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/03/03/eveningnews/main20039031.shtml

Yet ATF agents told us they were ordered to let thousands of weapons walk. Two of them, assault rifles, were later found at the murder scene of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in Arizona last December. Another gunrunning suspect under ATF surveillance was linked to the shooting of Customs Agent Jaime Zapata. And sources say many more "walked" weapons turned up at Mexican crime scenes.

Jaquez said, "I think this incidence is probably one of the darkest days in ATF's history."

............

But ATF wasn't working alone on the case known as "Fast and Furious." Documents show ATF had conference calls with "DHS" (Homeland Security). "USMS" (U.S. Marshals) and DEA. An "ICE," or Customs agent, was on ATF's Fast and Furious team. They were advised by an "AUSA," or Assistant U.S. Attorney under the Justice Department.

This was a huge conspiracy involving multiple agencies at the highest levels of federal government!! Willingly, intentionally, supplying deadly cartels with weapons as the violence rises. Purely sickening!! :!

I think somebody should pay for letting all those guns walk. They were not trying to bring down cartels. Their intentions were criminal.

I have so much respect for these guys who are speaking out. They are risking everything!

why do the cartels want semi-automatic rifles? Do they convert them to full auto? Those things jam all the time.

^ They are using semi-auto anti-aircraft 50 cal sniper rifles... which is amazing to say the least. Machine guns they use are obviously fully auto.

ATF agents have a special license to carry fully auto weapons also. And other weapons that would be illegal for you or me to have.

It's not just guns though, these guys are using RPG's and other explosives. Wouldn't be surprised if they are walking those too..

we're talking about gun shops in strip malls right?

last time I looked into getting one, it was possible for a civilian to buy a full auto, but a special permit had to be applied for (very expensive). I wonder if ATF was letting this happen too.

I'm guessing if you're a gun shop owner in southern TX, the cartels have you by the balls. I'm guessing there are better places to open a gun shop than southern TX.

IDK but this militaristic police state the US is becoming is ridiculous given the fact that:

  • They trained many of the founding members of Los Zetas cartel by the US military, here inside the US.
  • ATF(alcohol tobacco FIREARMS agency) is willingly & intentionally supplying Mexico with guns.

Looks a little fishy to me, to say the very least.

How does the US end up directly training and supplying the 'enemy' in the 'drug war'?

And I'm pretty sure without special clearance, it's pretty much impossible to get fully-auto weapons, legally.. I'm pretty sure they are all on the federal firearms ban

I think this is pretty much 'smoking gun' for a criminal conspiracy at high levels of federal government. It's quite obvious what went on was not only logically irrational, but most likely criminal.

I want to see all the criminals in office be prosecuted to the absolute fullest extent of the law.

re full autos: it's not so trivial as it may first appear:

if I were to buy a regular pistol or rifle, I'd need no special permit (unless the state requires it, which I think Texas doesn't). If on the other hand, I were to buy an automatic weapon, I'd need permission from the federal government (DOJ)

the point is, it's one thing to let a guy do something, but something else entirely to enable him to do something. If I'm correct on this, the cartels weren't just passively allowed to get the guns, but actively allowed (meaning a bureaucrat knowingly signed off on each individual purchase)

if journalists are looking for government collusion, they should start there

(this doesn't apply to the 50 caliber semis)

btw: are there journalists looking for government collusion? It surprises me how many huge stories are ignored by the media.

Operation "Fast and Furious" huh? Man, these people crack me up. Buncha corny fucks.

But yeah, when it comes to the ATF, CIA, DEA, FBI, DHS and all these world police kingpins, all you really need to do is just think of the lowest, scummiest, appalling act conceivable, and bet that these folks have at least dabbled in it. CIA importing narcotics, DEA doing the same, US Military guarding opium fields, ATF doing this shit. It's no surprise.

To me, all these "Enforcement" or "Authority" types are merely opposites of their own "Proposed" or "Granted" purpose. For instance: Police, to protect and serve. Well, I have not been protected nor served by any of these "Police". Though I have been put in danger and treated like a sub-human piece of rat-filth white-trash stain upon the societal khaki, by them. Opposites.

Courts/ "Justice"

ATF, FBI, CIA, DHS, ICE, USM etc./ "Necessary protectors of everything good and sacred whom fulfill god's wishes through force and truth in this great nation built upon honey and steak because the bad guy is always just around the corner and without us the world would simply implode"

War/ "Inevitable"

Soldiers/ "Noble"

Pride/ "Strength"

The act of Questioning/ "Weakness"

Police/ "Your Friend"

Prison/ "We don't have nearly enough"

Minimum wage/ "Ample"

Patriotism/ "Kill Em' All"

2+2=/ "Potato".

^ This is all appointed fodder that floods through the average sub conscious mind of the average meat bag.

You see, for the only way to really enforce flabbergastingly good news is to actually hear about these big brothers of ours doing good. That's right. GOOD.

One day my big brother that pummels me and urinates on my waffles regularly just might stop his corrupt ways. And in the wake of my tear evaporating state, he just may hand me a flower and say, "My bad".

Of course this type of thing has been going on for decades, e.g. the CIA allowing cartels to smuggle drugs into the U.S. etc.

HOWEVER, given the severity of the violence in Mexico right now, the millions of U.S. citizens and Mexican citizens outraged with their governments, I propose we educate as many people and possible, and march.

You know my dad always said that he thought my generation lacked a "cause", well we can't ignore this anymore. Know your rights, and fight!

I think somebody should pay for letting all those guns walk. They were not trying to bring down cartels. Their intentions were criminal.
If someone does pay, my bet's on some scapegoat and not those responsible.
And this absolutley could have been part of trying to bring down a, or multiple, cartel(s).
(Agreed the actions are/were criminal, however that's semantically, IMO this is more of a "means/ends" situation.)

I have so much respect for these guys who are speaking out. They are risking everything!
I'm on the fence here. The two who've spoken out (that I know of) seem to have been there, what, a year each? Almost worries me there could've been a valid op going on that they weren't privy to, found out about, and w/o knowing the full story, presumed the most sinister.

why do the cartels want semi-automatic rifles? Do they convert them to full auto? Those things jam all the time.
They want/have all types of weaponry.

ATF agents have a special license to carry fully auto weapons also. And other weapons that would be illegal for you or me to have.

It's not just guns though, these guys are using RPG's and other explosives. Wouldn't be surprised if they are walking those too..
We can have most of them, it's just a royal PITA that makes it quasi-impractical...
and "RPG's" seems to almost paint it lightly:
to buy Stinger Missiles, Anti-Tank Weapons for Sinaloa Cartel

<<NSFW=copied story:

TUCSON – Three people are accused of trying to buy anti-tank weapons in Arizona for a drug cartel in Mexico. Federal indictments were recently unsealed in Phoenix. Court documents show the three also tried to buy a Stinger missile.

Download PDF of the Missile Traffickers

The accused were trying to buy the military weaponry for the Sinaloa Cartel. Court documents show they used pounds of crystal meth for a down payment on the weapons.
The case started in 2009 in Phoenix. One of the accused, David Diaz, approached a confidential informant working for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. They delivered nearly five pounds of crystal meth and $139,000 in cash. Then they brought ten more pounds to finish the arms deal.

Robbie Sherwood is the spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona.

“These are very serious charges, as the indictment that has been unsealed indicate. We will be proceeding to trial soon and we look forward to presenting our case at that time.”

From the indictment:

A Dragon Fire Anti-Tank Weapon, a Stinger Missile, (a surface-to-air missile like those used by Afghan fighters in the eighties to defeat the Soviets), two AT-4s, a shoulder-fired light anti-tank rocket, a variety of grenade launchers, two M-60 machine guns and three cases of hand grenades.

Court records show that Diaz was trying to buy the weapons for the Yucatan Peninsula. They were destined for druglords Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán and Ismael El Mayo Zambada, the leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel. The cartel is battling not only every other cartel in Mexico, but also the Mexican Army.

John Bailey, a Georgetown University professor who worked in Mexico most of his career, says this level of weaponry was likely designed to take on the Mexican government itself.

“It’s the kind of weaponry that you’d expect to be used against the Army. These groups are willing to up the ante.”

The trial begins in April in Arizona.
(lol I got family from that town, hope they're being safe lol ;P

Better, unless you're interested in supplying the cartels...or if you just think having the shop negates the problems you'll likely face.
Yeah, civilians can get a (classIII?) but it's a VERY expensive proposition, and the weapons availabile, the hoops to jump through, make few go through with it.

IDK but this militaristic police state the US is becoming is ridiculous given the fact that:

  • They trained many of the founding members of Los Zetas cartel by the US military, here inside the US.
<<<The original training the Zetas got has little bearing on the current zeta cartel, oh and lots of that training happened outside the US. And we gave similiar training to soldiers for almost all the major cartels. Dubbing the Z's the "us-sanctioned" cartel is wrong IMO, if anything it's sinaloa, but I'm no expert.>>>
  • ATF(alcohol tobacco FIREARMS agency) is willingly & intentionally supplying Mexico with guns. <<Maybe poor tactics, but this could easily fall into an overall strategy where, well most anyways, would agree the ends did justify the means, presuming it was executed appropriately and succeeded>>>
Looks a little fishy to me, to say the very least.

How does the US end up directly training and supplying the 'enemy' in the 'drug war'?<<Again tho, we just training some of the main zetas. The average zeta learns basics of "military", weapons, counterintel, counternarcoticsintel, and terrorism while at zeta training facilities. If you get caught by a truckload of zetas and kidknapped, I can promise your odds of having a US-trained soldier in that convoy is almost certainly zero>>

And I'm pretty sure without special clearance, it's pretty much impossible to get fully-auto weapons, legally.. I'm pretty sure they are all on the federal firearms banThere's restrictions on date for full-auto's, like when they were made. And the "special clearance" is part of the aforementioned PITA's of getting license in the US, it's something like: submit application through the right FFL, they help you locate the firearm while ATF runs stuff, you gotta have your "clearance" (sherriff, etc) before even submitting to the ATF, once you wait some months for your permission, you either get the tax stamp you paid for or not. If you do, then you and your ffl dealer can process the transaction. That said, a buddy's gun store burned down (and he was shot alongside his wife/sister....if you see my locaation you may know who I mean), but anyways he had full-auto's for sale AND his were nothing compared to this other dude's down the street. Wouldn't be shocked to see lots and lots of full-auto/class-III's walking from these AZ and TX shops, especially w/ ATF's oversight!>>>

I think this is pretty much 'smoking gun' for a criminal conspiracy at high levels of federal government. It's quite obvious what went on was not only logically irrational, but most likely criminal. <<<Perhaps, but we may need to look at the "to break an omelet, ya gotta..." argument here. Wish I knew far more about where these arms were destined for (IIRC the aforementioned missiles I'd linked in this post seem to be for sinaloa) >>>

I want to see all the criminals in office be prosecuted to the absolute fullest extent of the law. <<<play devil's advocate here - are there ANY circumstances this could have happened, IYO, where this could be seen as less than the criminal view you're holding it to?>>>

Well, you train one, he can train others, and others train others, and so forth. The skills learned can be taught and retaught for generations to come. We trained over 500....

Can't be sure which cartel(s) the US may support, but the Zetas certainly seem to have the upperhand, if all the other cartels are ganging up on them.

Maybe poor tactics, but this could easily fall into an overall strategy where, well most anyways, would agree the ends did justify the means, presuming it was executed appropriately and succeeded
Ya but these motherfuckers also think the 'war on drugs' ends justify the means !! 8) They have a consensus, that any sensible person knows is just plain wrong...

play devil's advocate here - are there ANY circumstances this could have happened, IYO, where this could be seen as less than the criminal view you're holding it to?
At the lower levels (the agents following orders), yes, I do think they were just following orders. The "break some eggs to make an ommelette" arguement sounds like pure BS from the upper levels of government.

Whose idea was it to begin with, and how exactly did they think it was going to lead them ANYWHERE positive by giving shitloads of weapons to cartels? It doesn't make sense, no matter how I try to rationalize it. It sounds more like the higher level officials made deals with other cartel(s) and then had agents running weapons to them, called it "Fast & Furious" to the regular agents...

I just want to see all the greedy criminals running this country put where they belong - federal prison. I want to see the system eat it's own shit, and then finally let go of the militaristic police state it is forcing us to live in.

I don't understand, when the fuck is America going to wake up? Maybe everyone is too dumbed down by their prescription meds to realize.

Well, you train one, he can train others, and others train others, and so forth. The skills learned can be taught and retaught for generations to come. We trained over 500....Well, The School of the Americas (and their new-named org, they did the blackwater/Xe rebranding approach) trained people in EVERY cartel, that's just fact (and obvious). And it was close to 200 of the specific spec-op's group that got the training at benning that defected and became zetas. Now, do the zetas teach these methods? Sure. BUT, we trained osama and crew - would you say his *entire* army is US trained? See, the original zetas were trained well, and they continued using this training for future zetas, but to imply a regular zeta is on par with a generic US infrantry grunt is wrong. That's not the reality here.

Can't be sure which cartel(s) the US may support, but the Zetas certainly seem to have the upperhand, if all the other cartels are ganging up on them.FOR CLARIFICATION, I'M NOT TAKING SIDES, READ: ZETAS, DON'T COME KILL ME LOL. Yes, the zetas have the upper hand. Hell, "carteles unidos" (proposed group by CDG(gulf) and CDS(sinaloa), and perhaps others) put banners all over many areas asking for a temporary alliance between carteles unidos and the feds to get rid of the zetas, saying once the zetas are gone, the fed can go right back to fighting traffickers. The other sides are ganging up on them because zetas are killing their business (both by competition, and perhaps even more, by making the plazas/media/country hot as hell). Oh and not all are against them, some are just paying lip service to it. Further, once zetas are gone (if that ever happens in the current situation), the fighting will just become CDS v CDG and many others. Honestly, we need a US-sponsored, MX-fed cartel, but that's not happening soon.
Oh, and that does NOT mean the US supports them - the zetas are likely the LEAST likley to be supported. If anything - god it's taboo saying shit like this - the CDS(sinaloa) has the gov support. I'll bring some wikileaks cables or other sources to illustrate as much if people are unaware on this.

Ya but these motherfuckers also think the 'war on drugs' ends justify the means !! 8) They have a consensus, that any sensible person knows is just plain wrong...

I meant that in a different way. I meant - let's go theoretically here - let's say that, behind the scenes, US, MX, CDS, CDG and others all want zetas gone. The US supplying CDG (zeta's most visible opponent) with weapons makes most sense, since a- CDG created the zetas, and b- CDG (CDS, too) wants them gone asap (yes, presumably for reasons none other than greed/marketshare, but CDS(sinaloa) seems to be gov-favored since they keep this shit a little more "respectable" and out of public eye). They(feds/govs) KNOW there's no "win" here, however, removing zetas and other violent groups, while still allowing traffic, is a "win" in a lot of ways in their eyes. It's a lesser of evils situation. If you think the DEA/CIA/ICE/gov thinks there's an "end" to this war, an 'end' meaning no drugs, you really aren't getting them I don't think - I think that ideological view, on the part of the two ICE agent whistleblowers, is what blew an otherwise (potentially) useful op..

At the lower levels (the agents following orders), yes, I do think they were just following orders. The "break some eggs to make an ommelette" arguement sounds like pure BS from the upper levels of government.Dunno, I think the ones doing what they told/breaking some eggs got the bigger picture, and that the two 1yr recruits to that ATF office were the ones who didn't get the bigger picture and, well, couldn't take "just do your job, we can't' let you in on the bigger picture' and just follow their orders. (NOT saying right/wrong, just calling it how I see it)

Whose idea was it to begin withw/o knowing the end game here it's impossible to know that, and how exactly did they think it was going to lead them ANYWHERE positive by giving shitloads of weapons to cartels?(again, could've armed the zetas' rivals and helped eliminate zetas, it could've built a case against zetas or zeta-aligned cartels - hell, CONSPIRACY ALERT: it could've been meant to get the violence amp'd up **in general** to justify further US/other intervention, remember most have little clue there's any more than some little, minor 'street turf' situation :| ) It doesn't make sense, no matter how I try to rationalize it. It sounds more like the higher level officials made deals with other cartel(s) and then had agents running weapons to them, called it "Fast & Furious" to the regular agents...No doubt - but I see you thinking this as some kind of overt support for said cartel(s) functions, which I don't believe - think about it, if that were just the entirety of it, wouldn't we just use cargo planes and bring a - more weapons, b - better weapons, and, most importantly, c - move said weapons w/o issue as compared to smuggling them??

I just want to see all the greedy criminals running this country put where they belong - federal prison. I want to see the system eat it's own shit, and then finally let go of the militaristic police state it is forcing us to live in.

BTW, just as an aside, I haven't forgotten about our PM's. With this (and another thread), I've been rethinking the topics of said pm's. I'm going to write you soon but it's a bit of a different tone, and I'm working on exactly how to really get it across to you, so plz excuse to the delay and be patient cuz it is coming, and do need your ideas ;P

For the Record Im in Michigan, we have open carry, full auto (extra $200 in paperwork), Silencers (200 in paperwork), concealed carry ($150 and a class).....not sure on flash grenades RPGs etc etc but the rest im on top of. Official NRA card carrying member. (as if that means shit)

edit, like e-tarded said, every one of these procedures is a huge pain in the ass and you will likely be treated like shit for being a civilian, aka, ppl trying to ask why you need it, convince you otherwise, "mailing errors", paperwork not clearing the sheriff/DA for weeks, even months. Honestly concealed carry and silencer are worthwhile (dont wanna blow my ears out and shoot at a range alone usually). Full auto sems a bit impractical but if I ever got an old school tommy gun I might apply, for authenticity sake.

Anybody know why Secretary Clinton is holding back releasing any documents from her department in order to properly investigate?

"This refusal is mystifying in its own right" and "stands in stark contradiction to the promise of transparency promoted by President Obama," reads the Issa letter. He is now asking for the information as well. "Additionally, please explain in detail the reasons behind your refusal to answer the Senator directly."
