Movie Reviews Part 2 - The good, the bad and the ... rentals

Wicker Park : What a wank of a movie. I thought it sounded good.... Josh Harnett, yeah, not bad. Rose Burne, the Aussie actress who was in Star Wars...yeah I like her. The cover promised much rumpy-pumpy (touting itself as an "erotic thriller").
So yes, I settled in to be erotically thrilled but unfortunately, emerged bored out of my brain. The "twist" (such that it was) in the plot became painfully obvious after the 1st half hour. The only sex scene was some kissing of necks and panting = then cut to lying in bed afterwards (lame ). Oh and the soppy, ridiculous ending where they meet up in the airport... 8(
Wicker Park was based on a foreign film, possibly french, called "Le Apartment". I have no doubt the French version was better. Americans do *not* know how to do languid, atmospheric thriller/romances.
anyway... it must have been a weekend of lame movie choices because then I hired:
Cinderella Story . Yes I know, I know! It's a Hillary Duff movie. But a friend assured me it was hilarious.
I have now shot that friend, she's buried in the backyard with that copy of The Cinderella Story, and I'm trying to forget about the whole nasty incident.

Batman Begins
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film. Katie Holmes was the weakest link (she just has Joey from Dawson's Creek written all over her still). Michael Caine was great as ever... such pefect comedic timing. I thought Christian Bale made a good Batman. For an action style film, I found it really entertaining.

I watched Sin City a few nights ago. I think it is probably the best movie I've seen this year. I really, really enjoyed it. Dialogue was cool, the special effects were amazing, and the ultra-violence hit the spot.
Michael Madsen's performance sucked though. Don't know what happened there, he is usually pretty good.

I saw Sin City on the weekend too, on my sister's recommendation. What she didn't tell me was that it was not the sort of movie my dad would enjoy, so I was kinda conscious of the fact that I could tell my dad wasn't really that into it while we were watching it.
I wouldn't go as far as best movie this year, but I thought it was pretty decent. Miho was great... what a kickass character
Loved the way it was shot too.
Someone tell me though... what was the significance of Nick Stahl's character becoming yellow?

Faultless. And An Instant Classic.
Went an' saw it again last night.
Probably gonna be one of the best movies of the decade.
Can't give it enough props.

I agree with the general consensis on Sin City, I dont know about the movie of the year call. But i spose you look at the lack of other talented movies out already, and you dont come up with a huge amount.
Me being the DvD feind I am.. here is a couple of mine that a wrote a bit back for another site.
Nepolian Dynamite - Been looking forward to seeing this one for a while now after I missed seeing it at the pictures. I must say I really loved it, I watched it twice on overnight rental! It's a sorta innocent "dumbed" down comedy about nothing inparticular at all. One of those, watch life goes by movies with Nepolian's brother, best friend and a girl that has been a lil kid is soo many movies, but she's all grow up now. All in all there's not much too it, very quotable movie if you watch it a few times. GOSH!
Saw - This one is a great movie, with a couple of aussies behind it, Director and Screenwriter who also appears as one of the main characters. Saw, put's my faith back into the Horror/Thriller genre. I can't say much for fear of giving anything away, but it can get a little boring for some people a little bit, stick with it, you will be rewarded! This is very original

That story was based on the graphic novel called "That Yellow Bastard". I think the only reason he's yellow is because that's how he is in the comic. Probably more to do with the way some comics are printed in two-colour (black and yellow in this case) than anything else.katmeow said:

^ The dialogue in the movie mentions that he is yellow (and ugly) from all the different treatments he has been recieving in order to repair his sexual function (after Bruce shot him in the groin).

I rented this out with the pretense that it was funny, if not "haha" funny then "funny" in the same way im laughing at the nerd behind me who thought he was hardcore because hes drinking vodka cruisers in class, and then started making non-funny jokes at the lecturer.
Anyway.
I rented this out with some friends the other week, and tried to watch it. We only got half way through before we had to turn it off, it really didnt do anything for me. Oh, im sure that the plot went somewhere eventually, but at the time it just wasnt funny IN THE LEAST.
Also, i was drunk/stoned/benzoed and had about 200mg of codiene.
But come on! that should have made the movie MORE interesting, if anything.
Long story short, i dont like this movie.

I think Napoleon Dynamite is an acquired taste. You have to appreciate the fact that there is a pretty limited plot line to it and it's more or less stupid physical comedy and one liners.
I saw Madagascar and it was only mildly amusing because I was stoned. I woulnd't have got much out of it straight except for the dance party sequence with that reel 2 reel track. koo'
I saw Bewitched and thought it was cute but Nicole Kidman is kind of annoying with her seemingly put on 'oh my gosh hehe' giggly kind of voice. But it was sweet. Not for the guys AT ALL. I wouldn't be cruel enough to ever subject my boy to it.

In my view, if i have to see a movie stoned/under the influencez for it to be good, then i dont really want to pay money for it.
Unless its like, sonic vision or something, which is (apparently) very good, but even better when out of it.

My g/f said exactly the same thing "It was overly violent for no reason and lacked any real story or plot" but she watched it a second time and loved it! (and also stayed with the story)

Sin City... okay, I'll watch it if you all insist, but I didn't intend to... violence isn't my scene unless there's some reason for it and it's intrinsic to the plot, ie. I'm also a bit of a subtle comedy fan, and while my s/o was left searching for a plot, I was busy dissecting the poignant and painful analogies with human nature. I wouldn't say it was *entertaining* in the manner of some of the movies I mentioned above, it was maybe a bit too quirky for it's own good.... but it left me with a faint smile and I didn't mind spending my $3.30 on it (my local video store = heaps cheap new releases!!)

it. You've got to be willing to be open hearted about this one (check your worldly cynicism at the door about 1/2 way through, or, alternatively, take mushrooms). But it's worth it Some parts are cack-yourself hilarious. And Zach Braff is quite horn, in an insecure, jewish-boy type of way .

Garden State is my movie of the year by a country mile. I love Zach Braff and Natalie Portman and something about this movie wrenched at my heart. I saw it twice at the cinema and have watched it a few times on dvd too and each time you notice something new. It features one of my very fav songs at the end...Frou Frou - Let Go.
