Thanks for the clarification, that's what I figured. Now I need to find the dumbest drug rumors thread and post - if it isn't already there.
Are any drugs given to combat the vaso-constrictive properties of coke? Any at all as a preventative treatment? The only vaso-dilators I can think of is weed and salbutamol. Both are probable worse for someone who is uncomfortable from too much coke. They will potentiate the effects due to their stimulant nature..
Would alpha or calcium blockers help - or is this potentially very dangerous. Could they prevent a stroke?
ACE inhibitors? They seem to have potential but I'm not doctor.
I know Beta blockers aren't recommended at all, people get flamed for recommending them so I won't go there.
I am not recommending you take any of the above drugs to prevent vasoconstriction.
But having a possible antidote on hand might be a good idea. in the name of harm prevention if one exists.
Thanks again, and sorry for the slightly OT - but we are talking bout possible prevention of heart damage by coke.
there are many cardiac variables that have been shown in animal studies but those same variables haven't been easily or predictably reproduced in human studies. of course in an ER situation you're rarely, if ever, dealing with pure cocaine so whatever other substances that could be in the coke, like meth, also contribute to cardiac symptoms and damage. at best the cardiac output is certainly going to be less and blood pressures will be increased which both affect the brain and other organs. i personally don't know of an "antidote" for coke ODs that works similar to narcan (naloxene) in opiate ODs although i'm not trying to say none exists; i don't know of any in common use in ER situations. i doubt calcium channel blockers or ACE inhibitors would help a hell of a lot especially when someone is in a crash situation but i'm not a doc either, just a lowly RN

interesting questions hexxx, but the only certain way to avoid bleeds or cardiac damage from cocaine is to not consume any cocaine at all.
