Mother and son held in $400m drug bust

An attempt to smuggle into Australia a massive shipment of heroin with a potential street value of $400 million has been foiled.

The heroin was hidden in a container load of wooden doors.

The bust by Australian Federal Police and Australian Customs and Border Protection Services officers under a joint operation revealed on Monday, is the fifth largest in the nation's history.

It's also the biggest heroin bust in eight years, involving 168kg of the drug and taking almost one and a half weeks to uncover.

"On the major drugs bust in Australia today, I offer my congratulations to the Australian Federal Police on such a sizable haul," Prime Minister Julia Gillard told reporters in Malaysia.

A 55-year-old mother, her 28-year-old son and a 33-year-old Hong Kong national, were arrested in Campsie, in Sydney's southwest, on Saturday.

They are expected to appear in Central Local Court on Wednesday (November 3) charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, and could face life imprisonment if convicted.

Federal Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said the bust showed law enforcement agencies were serious about stopping drugs from entering the country.

"Taking these drugs off Australian streets deprives the drug trade of $58.8 million in proceeds and prevents the untold damage caused to Australian families by drug use," he said in a statement.

The heroin is worth about $58.8 million in its current form but when cut it could be worth up to $410 million or more on the street, Australian Federal Police acting national manager of crime operations Commander David Stewart said on Monday.

Officers found the heroin - the largest seizure of its kind since 2002 when about 380kg of heroin was discovered in Brisbane hidden in packaged noodles - in a shipping container of house doors sent from Malaysia to Sydney.

"A seizure of this magnitude is significant," he told reporters in Sydney.

"A large one has not been found of this nature since 2002.

"This importation is the fifth largest in Australian history and has saved the community $48.7 million in associated health and social costs."

Customs and Border Protection Officers at Port Botany allegedly found the drugs concealed among a shipment of 295 house doors on October 21.

They allege X-rays revealed packets of heroin, dipped in wax and wrapped in plastic, concealed inside 10 of the doors.

A total of 230 drug packages were found, with 24 packets of white powder inside nine of the doors and 14 packets in the tenth.

"The doors were manufactured to look like domestic internal doors," Commander Stewart said.

"They were of pretty poor construction - plywood was screwed on top of the doors and inside there were foil blocks.

"Once you unscrewed the ply from the doors it was very plain to see the blocks in full view. Customs detected them with relative ease."

Undercover officers then commenced a controlled delivery, with the consignment delivered to a warehouse in the Sydney suburb of Guildford.

The arrests were made on Saturday after the contents were taken to an address in Campsie, police said.

Commander Stewart said the AFP was working with partner agencies in Malaysia to see if there would be any more arrests.

"A seizure of this note, whilst it may look like the conclusion of an investigation, in many cases opens up questions for us to pursue," he added.

Customs and Border Protection national manager sea cargo and international mail, Graham Krisohos, said the operation demonstrated the value of agencies working together.

"I would like to recognise the high quality targeting and search effort that led to this detection," he said in a statement.

I guess a headline of Mother and son held in $58.8m drug bust just didn't sound news-worthy enough. Still, that's a lot of dope.

So where was the origin of the drugs? It says that they arrested a Hong-Kong national along with the mother and son, but doesn't go into detail about that.

I would have figured that a quantity like that would be shipped straight from the source..... So south-east Asia in this case?

It's probly from around south-east Asia concidering allot of the heroin for that region of the world is produced there. They are lucky they didn't get busted in Asia or they would of been executed; though they are still gonna be fucked really hard.

I can't even imagine what would be going though some ones mind when they are being busted in a situation like this.

I think that figure is the profit dealers would have made from selling the heroin. The overall worth/cost of the heroin once cut and sold on the streets would be much higher, especially considering in Australia we pay, I think roughly 5x the price for the same amount/quality compared to the US.

But even for Australia's ridiculous prices, $400m is still a bit of an exaggeration. Without getting specific about prices, by my calculations 168kg of heroin would be worth 1/4 to 1/2 of the stated $400m here in Aus.

Good point though. I hate how the police exaggerate the value of the drugs they've just busted, all to please the public and make it look like they're doing such a great job :\ And the media/journalists (even if they know the $ value is bullshit) will just be licking their lips thinking about the story they can write/sensationalise.

It becomes apparent how futile the drug war is, when people manage to acquire 168 kilograms of heroin, and the last time a comparable amount was found was eight years ago. It's obvious that someone, at all times, is distributing this much if not much more, on an annual, monthly, weekly, or even daily basis.

Well, when the consumption is over a hundred tons per annum, you'd expect so. You hear about ton seizures on occasion, but even then they tend to only represent 1-2% of the market.

i work on x rays and what they did would be SO easy to see. powder would look like wood but wax would be obviously more dense and a different colour on the x ray. you need to spread a powder within some other powder that is legitimate and airtight. or put it in a place where powder is expected to be. like powdered milk for babies (although australia is unlikely to allow this as its a "food").

my personal favourite- in some capsules within a bottle of ginseng...

NYC heroin mill bust [theater district] 28lbs. 250,000 bags 6.5 million

NEW YORK | Thu Nov 11, 2010 11:50am EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Police dismantled a heroin mill on the edge of Manhattan's theater district and just two long blocks from Times Square, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said on Thursday.

Four people were arrested and an estimated 13 kg (28 pounds) of heroin worth $6.5 million was seized, the statement said.

A task force of DEA, the New York Police Department and New York State Police led the operation on Wednesday night on West 43rd Street between 9th and 10th avenues -- a short walk from Broadway theaters

wow, great article.:\ (Not you blah, but reuters, for their nice and 'in depth' reporting 8) ) Seriously, WTF is that? Way to provide details, guys. the shit in the OP is the entire damn article.

I rather see the information about where they speculate it came from, etc...this was mad uninformative, a bust like that i like to hear a little more about. too bad.

thats crazy where that heroin packaging lab was located at... maybe it was supplying all the rich New Yorkers and Actors in the theaters

Not sure where you're from, but if you walk around that area of NYC for maybe 10 seconds, you'll see hundreds of offices/buildings that have fuckall in it!

Thousands and thousands and thousands of rooms in skyscrapers that could have literally anything in them. Chain-smoking, time-traveling, transvestite librarians building miniature models of libraries for instance. The rooms could be filled with thousands of them! Who knows!?

My point is that in these thousands of rooms that are visible standing in any direction in Times Square, there's probably massive amounts of drugs in a few of them and some drugs in many of them.

Watched the video - what stupid dealers. You do shit shady and people will notice. You have a clean cut neatly dressed white guy with his small work out duffle like bag, inconspicuously filled with heroin, and no one will think twice. You have people coming in an out with garbage bags, put black sheets over the windows, and just act shady in general around a bunch of rich white people and people will notice....
