sometimes they say seeds sometimes pods. disjointed journalism
the drug is usually crushed up and poured into drinks like tea
yeah... it IS the tea
Investigators are looking into whether the poppies may have originated in Afghanistan, where much of the world's opium poppies are grown.
well it's great to have poppies linked with terrorism in the media now
Detectives had a hard time placing a value on the poppies because of the rarity of poppy cases here, but they said it could be about $50,000 worth
i think that's $4 a tablespoon but i might have used a wrong value (4 grams per tablespoon?). i can see rich kids paying that if they don't know any better

i hope that eventually a journalist will be able to write about the other side of the drug issue. like opiophobia causing unnecessary suffering, peeling apart the causes and effects related directly or indirectly to addiction (for society and individuals) rather than just assuming all illegal or quasi-illegal drug use is bad, etc

and mainly i hope this doesn't start a media trend which ends up in this bliss no longer being semilegal...

Reichardt said he didn't know where the drugs came from in the states. Investigators are looking into whether the poppies may have originated in Afghanistan, where much of the world's opium poppies are grown.

Yeah since about 2001-2002 I believe.

Anyone have any idea how much opium can be yeilded from 115 pounds of dried pods?

Most people need a few pods to catch a buzz. Opiate noobs don't start at making poppy tea. So that would make it like a $100 high LOL

Exactly.. I was given anti-depressants at the doc's the other day. He said, here, just try these. And handed me a 1 month supply sample.

I did some research over the last couple of days and it seems the withdrawals or 'discontinuation syndrome' from some of these SSRIs or SNRIs can be more hellish than opiate withdrawals.

I've done the opiate withdrawal thing but having brain shocks and vertigo, diarrhoea etc for months isnt my kind of deal. But you dont hear much about stopping anti-depressants in the media at all...

Poppy pods... ya. raid em.

This is like saying "Most states do not contain Nebraska"

no it's not. there are many different kinds of poppies, and only a couple (two?) can be used to produce opium. Semantically, what you're saying would be the same as saying most somniferums don't contain rhoeas', but to say that most poppies don't contain opium is quite a different thing.

AUS - Drug squad seizes $70m haul

Drug squad seizes $70m haul

Two men have faced a Sydney court charged over the seizure of 76 kilograms of amphetamine worth up to $70 million.

Acting on a tip-off, members of the Organised Crime Squad yesterday raided two homes in the Sydney suburbs of Leichhardt and Drummoyne.

There they found 64 kilograms of a white powder, believed to be amphetamine.

They found another 12 kilograms of the drug in a car at Drummoyne.

Police estimate the haul has a potential street value of $70 million dollars.

Two men, aged 50 and 55, have been charged with supplying a commercial quantity of illegal drugs and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

They faced court today and were refused bail. They are expected to appear in court again in Sydney on Monday.

News: "Mexico security forces seize 105 tonnes of marijuana " - BBC 19-10-2010

Mexico security forces seize 105 tonnes of marijuana

Marijuana in 10,000 brown and silver packages at the Morelos military base in Tijuana, 18 October 2010 The army said the packages were still being weighed and counted

Mexican security forces in the city of Tijuana, on the border with the US, have seized 105 tonnes of marijuana - the largest such drug haul for many years.

Eleven people were arrested during the operation, during which one police officer and one suspect were injured in exchanges of gunfire.

The drugs were found wrapped in 10,000 packages, in houses and vehicles.

They have a US street value of more than $340m, the Mexican military said.

"The seizure of these drugs is without precedent in the country," General Alfonso Duarte told reporters.

Soldiers and police found the drugs in pre-dawn raids in three neighbourhoods in Tijuana, a city across the border from San Diego, California.

Gen Duarte said the packages were still being counted and weighed and the amount could increase. The marijuana would be incinerated once all packages had been registered, he added.

The general said local gangs had been preparing to smuggle the drugs into the US, but he did not identify the gangs or say where the marijuana originated.

According to the Mexican authorities, 115 tonnes of marijuana had been confiscated in all of Baja California state so far in 2010.

The haul in Tijuana came one week after Mexican President Felipe Calderon visited the city and called it a success in his drug war.

More than 28,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico since 2006.

Mexico is the one of the world's largest exporters of marijuana, a drug that generates billions of dollars of revenues for violent drug cartels in the country.

Some 105 tonnes of marijuana has been seized in Mexico, in what is expected to become the country’s biggest ever drug bust.

Eleven people were arrested yesterday in the city of Tijuana after a pre-dawn gun battle between members of the drug cartel and police and soldiers - two people were injured.

The marijuana was found in six cargo containers in a warehouse, wrapped in 10,000 packages and has a street value of £215million.

Legalize pot take away billions from the cartels. Period. Lets not even get ahead of ourselves, legalizing all drugs should follow in due time, however i say billions is a pretty decent blow to start with, and see how the cartels react. If we legalize all drugs at once, they could very well become terrorists or some shit with American targets. Either that or maybe they will be smart enough to invest the trillions of dollars they have in HUGE business that will rack up a plethora of profits just the same.
