MO, Salem - August 13-16 2009 - Underground Sound 5

Where exactly did you read that bassnectar is headlining? I cant seem to find any information. . .

On Bassnectar's website, under his tour page, it says he is playing at Camp Zoe electronic music festival in Aug... same dates as USG5 i believe.

here's my two cents on this...

i had a great time at the cave/USG4 last year MINUS someone breaking into my car and stealing ALL MY CLOTHING. and no one i turned to could do a damn thing about it, and the old hillbilly owner of the salt peter cave threatened me and my friends when we set up a tent next to our car when that wasn't allowed... well, how were we supposed to know?? the event overall was poorly organized, no information was given out, and there was no FIRST AID. and some one died. the first aid booth had a sign that said to "call 911" well too bad there was no cell phone service. oh yeah, and that old guy tried to charge us to camp next to some trees... basically, i did not feel safe at this venue and am glad this is moving...

to camp zoe. zoe is great, i've been there for a swagstock. it is really beautiful and there is a fun cave to climb into. BUT do be careful driving there, especially in the town of salem, make sure you go the speed limit, this venue usually pays the cops off to keep them out but they do like to patrol the roads hardcore, so don't look suspicious.. hopefully it will be safer here than at the last place which i'm sorry, that cave is not sacred...

all that being said, i'm probably not even going this year although I see bassnectar is probably going to be playing??

i still would like to track down who stole all my damn clothes, so if anyone knows anything, please let a sister know.

I think your experience was unique because I certainly did not see any of this douchebaggery. Me and my group were at the venue almost first on friday morning and had no problems parking (and both cars were completely left alone, despite being at the front of the parking lot). Also, why did you set your tent up in the parking lot? No wonder you got yelled at.

I think UGS4 was pretty chaotic, but it was a FAR CRY from unsafe. I've heard plenty of rumors of "OMG SOMEONE DIED AT THE CAVE" but I haven't seen any reports. Tom Foolery and the Catalytic Souls guys are stand up promoters and would not throw another event if UGS4 really went as bad as you say it did. Honestly, the "bad press" that UGS gets was actually worse for UGS3. I think the community (Carbondale, Murphysboro) have welcomed the event-goers because they tend to burn through the local gas stations and grocery stores, bringing in thousands of dollars that normally wouldn't be funneled into southern Illinois. I remember the news channels blowing up in 2007 for UGS3, but hardly anything was said about UGS4.

From what I've heard Zoe is a very clean and spacious event venue. I think Tom & Co were forced to move locations due to the shadiness that UGS has been known for. While I treasure the memories of the cave and am sad that I probably can't go because they moved it further away, I do understand that security NEEDS to be heavier or else bad things will happen. This is hard to accomplish at the cave with so many people coming out every year. It was only a matter of time before the party moved to a legal, bonafide venue. I'm not necessarily happy about it, but from a promoter's point of view, it makes perfect sense.

Tom, I really hope the lineup this year is as hot as I'm hoping. I need a reason to trek it out to Missouri. bassnectar would be a very good start ;)

For those not familiar with the venue, please explore on campzoe.com
This is the most enjoyable places for a camp fest that I have been. The place was purchased by a Grateful Dead tribute band to hold festivals out and is constantly being maintained and improved. We will have many more portapotties and a truck that stays on-site cleaning them throughout the weekend. Running water and crystal clear cool creek to swim in while listening to some great music. No one died last year, and a lot of the people in uniform that many were running scared of were actually paramedics if anyone stopped to read their patches. Our security were all EMS trained. Camp Zoe has a great medical staff that will also be present at this event. The owners and staff are all musicians/music lovers and love and respect the people that come to their events. That really makes a difference. We also have much more space to grow. And wait until you hear the sound rig this year;)
And yes, we are having the biggest lineup to date.

That old piece of shit owner from the cave that looked like santa clause, ran over my 500 $ tent with a fucking golf cart a ruined it, what ever karmas a bitch and that old fuck was obviously all sorts of fucked up on something harder than e, along with 1/2 of all attendees. jesus christ lay off the fucking amphetimines - they called ugs4 - "the circus of freaks" for a reason. I have been to alot of shows, and alot of stuff about ugs4 sucked. how the fuck am I supposed to know where to put my tent in the fucking dark? unlike other festivals their were no lines on the ground / rope / etc. that marked off the camping area and no one saying were you could/couldnt put your tent)

I had a lot of fun last year although I've heard stories about that place being an old Indian burial ground and even though it was geologically really cool, it still made me think that we were disrespecting the dead. Dude I was totally parked next to whoever got their car brocken into and tried to set up camp there, i tink i talked to u for a min about that. but camp zoe will be a goood time, bassnectars going to be there too i heard.

fuck that old ass piece of shit, I love how he screamed at me calling me a fucking crack head after HE ran over my tent, if ugs5 was at the cave I would egg/sabotage everything that tweaked out piece of shit owned, on a side note a month or 2 ago my friend asked if I was going to go to UGS5 and I told him the only way in hell I would even consider it was if bassnectar was going.what a small word

I would also like to say THANKS!! for moving the venue... at ugs three I was introduced to edm "short of one local bassnectar womping" and my mind was blown... and the camping and venue kicked ass.. until sunday when i had lost my car keys... asked the owner.. he kindly asked me to pick up trash while he asked around.. kindly found them... but accidentally forgot to tell me... so 3 hours later after feeling like i was gonna die i went searching around for the fourth time and found him and thank JEEEZUS he found em

so dont bad mouth him.. can you imagine having the weight of 4000 trippers on you...

just having to deal with one thinking his was dead was the most intense experience of my life...

then last year we arrived late! 5 pm friday! and got stuck? setting the tent next to the porta potty... ruined every hour of the weekend that i was not at the main stage.............................................

holy shit though did anyone else realise that simon posford is the shit.. i mean seriously.. SERIOUSLY!! ooah kicked ass as well.. and evol intent was sick for a dj set i think i was just upset all three didnt show up

ok so... i went to one schwag and the only thing i enjoyed was the venue lol so this should be fucking STELLLAR!!

just dont be suprised when you get there and alot of fest. heads are there that seem to have this idea that since they have been going to ever schwag for ten years they are better than you.... or was that just me??

hopefully that type wont show since they "hate" "techno"

and bring a damn test kit kids... it will SAVE your life and money :|

and tom... as if everything hasnt been decided.. i'm gonna be a tard and suggest that more psy/trance/chill be booked again.... simon p will be in the states this summer.. as will Ott... eat static.. bluetech... and electrypnose...

maybe?? 8)

Even if Simon and Ott aren't there, I can almost guarantee you (95%+) that the cave rave crew has the knowledge to have another Psy/Chill area again! That area up on the hill (i was camped up there myself) was absolutely the best. And they'd be fools not to have it again.

Cant wait for UGS5... I will be repping it everywhere I go.

I first want to thank catylitic souls for changing the venue. The people that own "the cave" are dickheads, plain and simple.

Atleast Zoe is spacious and has WATER running through (no more of my friends dying from heat exhaustion)

TomFoolery:

I wanted to say to you, that the main reason i said i would NEVER come back to the cave after last year was the BLATANT and HORRENDOUS drug use. The security didn't care of if kids were fucking dying in front of them. Hey i like drugs too, but security is there to show that there still is the possibility of us all going to jail ( see: Rave Act ) and that one person shouldn't be able to ruin the fun for everyone (overdosing of 100's of kids is fucking crazy for such a small scale event) . Hey its cool to be underground, i understand that. But when kids are being able to bring in (and sell without regard) we all lose out on the real experience of it all (regular people get harassed and kids act stupidly thinking its ok.

I love you guys don't get me wrong, but we need to keep it real man. Needless to say, im going to give UGS another try (ive been there for the past 4 years) traveling from baltimore maryland. I hope the lineup keeps it real, and you guys don't over saturate us with 100 different stages of locals. I love stages, but not so many that one dj has 3 people dancing (kind of disrespectful to the dj's that come out IMO)

These are some well recognized problems. Last year I was prohibited (by the owners) from having the licensed security team out there. I still hired in several as EMTs as some were licensed for both, but bob would run them out of the park every chance he got. I won't go into the rest online. Needless to say that is one of the reasons for the move. It's not that it is inherent to the venue and could not be corrected, but that the promoters are not permitted to do so. Seems ludicrous right? Common sense would suggest a venue owner to want just the opposite... The stages have long been an issue. I do not like thinning the crowd and reduced the number greatly from UGS1, but there are so many that want to be a part. Even with 4-5 stages we still turn down a dozen or so crews and hundreds of DJs each year. We also don't get much of the cross pollination that they were designed to produce. This year we will have them camps, some of which are registered to have sound systems. These camps will each provide a unique environment for people to be a part of and want to see regardless of knowing the line-up or having heard of the djs performing at any given moment. I hope everyone works to make this a more participatory event. We are now moving to a peaceful haven where all should feel free to express themselves creatively and become a working part of the show.
Oh yeah and we have some superb acts that are going to rage it on a pristine sounding Vdosc rig for the main stage;)

Im definitely going. I like in KC so its not a bad drive at all. I've never been to one of these events, can someone give me a brief description of them?
