"Mixing 'Uppers' and 'Downers' is Bad" - The Common Misconception

This was one of the common misconceptions that I heard from people. There was always someone who's mom had told them about their friends kid that took a xanax while on coke, and their heart didn't know what to do since they were on both an upper and a downer, and therefore their heart gave out and they died. 8(

I agree that the masking effect is the main danger when mixing the two, and you should never do a larger dose of either drug than you would normally do on their own. It's definitely hard to judge the effect of some opiates while on speed, but you don't want to be caught off guard by the opiate dose when the speed wears off. As always, be careful people.

i've never done heron, but amphetamine/methamphetamine lasts a few hours at least, but ive never IVd.
even smoking methamphetamine lasts 3-5 hours of good noticeable stim effect IMO, and thats after the initial rush and the 30-60minutes of peak.
 
Like the person who said in a hospital they will likely give you a benzo if you go in there after ODing on stimulants.

This website actually has a couple of cases where people have tried to commit suicide by overdosing on mdma and benzos/alcohol and it hints at the irony that mixing the stimulant/depressant may have been what actually saved their lives. Just thought I'd mention it :).
 
Undiagnosed pre-existing conditions are the things that kill in these situations. Sleep apnea, extraordinary symptomless hypertension, heart failure and many others have contributed majorly to the deaths involving speedballs.

Billy Mayes, Jim Buloushi, Chris Farley, Pimp C, Big Moe, Dj Screw, among others notable cases had preexisting conditions and poor failing health. As to go, these people wouldn't have lived very long even if they didn't overdose.

So, the media instantly attacked the drugs. Leading to even more vile and disgusting reputations among drugs that are in themselves are safe if used properly, even to get high.

It depends on your tolerance to them. The other thing is that people don't always take them at the same time. I've never dosed them both at the same time, and instead have taken opiates a few hours after taking amphetamine. With that timing, the amp wore off an hour or so after taking the opiates, so if I had not taken the masking effect into consideration I would have re-dosed and it would not have ended well.

The heroin can actually stop you from instant heart-attack action of cocaine.

Opiates also are used medically to decrease the angina of heart attacks.
 
its strange how the news reports that speedballing has a 50% chance to kill you, yet it fails to mention just how dangerous mixing an upper with an upper is or mixing a downer with a downer... in fact speedballing is probably safer than taking a single drug alone as they counteract the issues that the other could cause! i know for a fact ive NEVER felt in danger when mixing an upper with a downer (coke and morphine, dexies and dhc etc) but when ive mixed a downer with a downer... it landed me in hospital, and many of the times i would do it i would feel quite uneasy.

i always remember hearing about the speedball combo when i was younger and thinking that it was the stupidest thing to do in the world because it would kill you straight away. how very wrong i was.

alcohol and caffeine is also very understated. i know of someone who has died from vodka and red bulls (in excess of course). alcohol and stimulants are a really dangerous combo imo. i hate drinking alcohol while i take my dexies, and oh my god when i drank on coke i felt as if i'd been hit in the face with a sledgehammer. ugh. fucking media hiding the truth behind drugs. i hate how we've the population of today has been raised to believe that alcohol is "safe" compared to many of the illegal drugs out there when in reality alcohol is one of the most dangerous drugs out there. a lot of people my age ( 18 )still don't think alcohol is a drug. oh boy are they fucking wrong. not to mention the effects it can have on your brain and the change in your mood. i know when ive drunk a lot i turn hostile, angry and agressive. normally im calm, friendly and peaceful. i'm also quite sure that alcohol is a gateway drug to harder ones IF you abuse the alcohol like many kids do these days. most of the people i know who have drunk alcohol in excess have turned to harder drugs much like me, i started on cigarettes and alcohol which eventually spiralled into me attempting to find a better drug. not to mention all the shit i put down me whilst i was drunk because i lost all controls of my inhibitions - i read somewhere that if found today alcohol would be classified as a class a drug in the uk (schedule 1 in the us i think?) and i couldnt agree more. fuck. that. shit.

It depends on the opiate and the individual - but generally, you're right. Amphetamine and methamphetamine have much longer half-lives than most of the commonly used opiates (morphine, heroin, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, etc). However, oxymorphone has about the same half-life as amphetamine, and methadone's half life is much, much longer than amphetamine.
 
came across this thread so i thought i would sign up on this board, since i'm always looking for info on drugs.
I think Uppers with downers is very bad for you, I almost died once (at least i think so ) from ketamine and crystal meth.
Alot of the time in young people your body can handle and upper and a downer, but your setting your self up for problems with your nervous system. I used to mix upper and upper ( had no clue weed was an upper/it is for me no one can convince me otherwise) and uppers and downers. Now i got problems with my nervous system, if i smoked weed when i am exhausted from the gym or when i am too sore, it induces a panick attack and i had to quit all drugs. Hopefully i can still smoke when i am not sore or too tired for many more year to come. My advice dont mix if you are wait until the effects start wearing down from one drug.
 
Hey, welcome to BDD! I am sorry you have had a bad experience and you are right that it is a good general rule to wait til you are coming off one drug before taking another. There are many dangerous combinations of drugs out there, and it depends on the health of the individual too. However it is also true that it is a misconception that uppers and downers somehow "confuse" your nervous system or your heart or anything along those lines - this is false. The one exception I can think of is taking a stimulant with a beta blocker - this can cause overactivity of one branch of your sympathetic nervous system (which acts on your alpha-receptors) causing vasoconstriction and other cardiovascular problems.

However, just because it is a myth that downers+uppers are inherently bad doesn't mean mixing them can't be dangerous though, for the reasons outlined in this thread..

I think this topic has been discussed pretty comprehensively and this thread is a few months old now so going to close it, but if anyone has anything to add or any queries feel free to shoot me a pm :)
