..::MELB::.. -=Summadayze=- NYD, REVIEWS. [Sidney Myer Music bowl]

well, well, well... in 2002 i had the best day ever. In 2005 i attempted to re-live that day. ...what a big mistake that was. From tripping over white sports shoes to bumping into 20 muzzas on the phone to their cousins.... I asked myself, where was i? I then realised i was not at summa dayze, but at an event celebrating all what is wrong with the commercialisation of "supposed" rave culture (everyone was wearing Von Dutch?). Taking 30 mins to shuffle to each stage i left after 2 hours. Im never going to a big event like this again.

So what was it like guys??? I'm from Perth and our summerdayze is on the 9th Jan, so tell me what I should be expecting... I'm a trance addict!!! AVB????

:)

Wow!

I just spent the last 20minutes trying to write an intelligent response, but as I'm a little fuck eyed right now, I'll just say these few things.

1. Queue - The queue to get in was a joke. If it was any hotter today, people would have been dropping like flies. Could have had at least someone selling drinks.

2. Toilets - you had to walk for 15minutes to get to the toilet. They needed more toilets.

3. Police - My good friends at the Ripput Police Station. Nice little drug bus sitting outside Summadayze there... What the fuck is that about? And how about the sniffer dogs around the front?

4. Music - yeah, the music had its ups & downs, but towards the end, I was loving it.

5. People - I found the majority of the crowed to be quite nice, with manners. Although, there was the odd fuckwit here and there.

6. Atmosphere - Unless you were standing almost straight on with the DJ, there was only that happy, relaxing vibe, kinda feeling.

7. Overall - Awesome place to have it, perfect! It ended up to be a great night... One I'll never forget.

TWO TRIBES '05 here I come.

meh, you have to expect this kind of crowd @ summerdayze. Once you do, its a lot more fun. For me , summerdayze was personified by the 18ish year old chick dressed up in her St Kilda best rolling so hard that she couldn't see straight but was able to check her makeup with her pocket makeup mirror whilst sucking on a lollipop. Glam meets mdma, such an ugly sight.

Best set was darren emerson + tim deluxe. Worst set was adam freeland - what a sell out. AVB was predictably boring but if you like progressive trance you would have thought he was fully sik. His butchering of Smells like Teen Spirit was an offence to music purists all over but the kiddies loved it.

Lee Coombs + Meat Katie did the best they could with shithouse sound system and the Housedayze arena was too scary to even comtemplate visiting.

Overall I had fun but probably won't get again. Unit they bring back teckdayze, summardayze is much the same on all the stages.

ps - summerdayze is not and has never been a celebration of the rave culture. Summerdayze has always been about the green.

my review, im still a lil dazed... but here i go...

caught the following djs... (minus, armin... everyone else on my list, is someone i think played... due to there DJ times on the summadayze website... )
tim deluxe and darren emerson
mark james??
armin van buuren !!!!!!!
john course

armin was fan-fucking-tastic!!... new found respect for the guy... replaces DJ scot project as my favourite dj... i was right in front during his entire set... =D lloove trance... and his set was mind-blowing for me.. just what i needed then and there... john course, boppy chiipmuck voices... mmmm not really my thing... by 10:20 i was wanted out of there... etc

the crowds, i agree with everyone... summadayze, the glitterati come and dance there facelifts, and von dutch asses off... the girls come with less and less clothes every year... and it's sexy in principal.. yay! girls in short short police uniforms!.... but... nah, it's kinda wrong... i miss seeing those girls with tank tops and huge phatties...

everyone was hyper... jumping! bounching... wasn't as social as i was at altona (pharmacy), but i was still friendly.. chatted with a couple of people... this is a thing... when i was at pharmacy, godskitchen, peoples ask me "who ya here to see??!" but when i was at summadayze people ask me "what are u on?!!"... etc.. maybe it's just me?

the que to get in was alright when i arrived 5 o'clock... got in within ten minutes... but so many bodies.. it took me bout 2 hours to get in front.. weaving and ducking... but it was worth it...

what else...?? the staff was really nice, brought water; girls and boys gave me discounts, ran out of water.. the security gave me water! saw some cops wearing those cone shaped vietnamese farmers hats! loved it...

my negative is my postive too... the mass of bodies!! i couldn't move.... couldn't dance... the best u can do, groove on the spot, use the rails as launchers.. jumping and bop on the spot... in the end.. too much people... for a while, i felt kinda light-headed from the swirls of people... thanx god i didn't faint!! im pretty i would have been hurt... though, i was next to some really nice girls;... diana? jo? something like that... they were crazy fans of armin, wicked!

that's all i can thinkof, for now.... happy dayze people!! cheers! :D

... Oooh, side note.. my ears have not stoped rinnnging!! :\

and it was nice to see the masses of people walking towards flinders station afterwards!! :D

i had a rawking fun day.

I was so happy when the sunshine broke through around 2:30.

The award for best set of the day has to without question go to darren emerson and tim deluxe. Loved every minute of them. Unbelieveable.

Armin was good, but it was just too crowded.
Ended up battling the insane crowds to get away from the mainstage. That was particularly scary. I was convinced someone was going to push someone else too hard, and somone would get crushed.

Found the croud to be a little pretensious... but i suppose that's to be expected. However, i felt a complete shift of atmosphere down on the dancefloors.

that's all for now. Summadayzedgirl, your avatar is doing my head in.

lovely review summadayzedgirl!

i had a great time, it seemed a bit fizzled through-out the day but van buuren and john course's sets made my day!

armin proved why he is number 2 in the world. when a dj of his calliber comes onto the dex u can here the difference straight away! just like summadayzedgirl i had the prevlidge of being up against the barrier right under-neath the man himself, sporting his red "the godfather" t-shirt! and how appropriate it was! just seeing him put his arms in the air and look the people in the front row in the eye and say "come-on" was fantastic! got a big buzz out of it! the crowd was tight but i really didn't care! i wasn't able to shuffle away but never-the-less it took nuthing away from the nite!

as for the overall crowd? well when i first walked in i thought that i was entering a cheesey night club but once i ventured out to the main dance floor i was surrounded by people who were there for the music and the DJs and not the drugs or their image!

summadayze represents the melbourne club culture, not the rave culture! its parties like pharmacy and hardware that get the job done with reflecting that scene. summadayze is more of a dance party where everyone is invited. everyone may not be totally crazy about the people they're partying with but at the end of the dayeveryone gets along friendly enough!

john courses set was wat u need! something that everyone new and could finish the nite off on a high with! i over heard at the end saying how he was thinking of opening with midas touch but decided to save it for the end! great move coursey! it was definately a crowd pleasure! enuf from me, looking forward to hearing others reviews!

and to all those people who bag summadayze and these type of events, i say to u that they're only as good as u can make them, if u spend the day analysing the people their and winging about sound systems and DJs well its a wonder that u have such a shit time!!!!!!!!!

^^ fuck your right! Maybe next time I'll just pop a pill and make it all go away! The disco bikkies will fix it all!

great event. was my first summadayze and outdoor/daytime event. took a little getting used to tho, as most were happy to sit around on the lawn all day...had to force a few down to the main stage.

summerdays was exactly as i expected crowd/atmosphere wise but im glad i was dragged along because armin's set was outstanding! im normally only into harder stuff but he totally blew me away; being front/centre 3 people back from the barrier helped =) crowd up the front during armin were good though, apart from being a little pushy i agree that everyone up the front were there for armin and it was clear they all loved it. teen spirit was huge at the end, i nearly went deaf from all the screaming and hearing thousands of people singing along had me grinning ear to ear, as i was throughout most of the set.

dunno what your problem is nezo, but armin was definetly not boring and i normally dont like non-hardtrance much. his mixing was flawless and he made it look so easy, as well as smooth and classy, unlike tiesto for example who looks like a retarded hack in comparison. armin sure knows how to work a crowd too, constantly smiling, clapping and punching the air to the music. overall, i was fucking impressed, beyond that even.. blown away. full respect.

Alright day, De La Soul was fun, but overall it was just too crowded.

A predictable crowd, and predictable tunes for the most part... I never quite got into the music apart from a few brief periods. De La Soul were fun but just couldn't get the crowd that involved. Emerson was great, and AVB was cheesy as could be, but put on a great show and had the crowd in his hand. I quite enjoyed Adam Freeland, not so much to dance to, but just to listen too - it was a good mid-afternoon set, but not really a jump-up style at all. My favourite sets of his have been more laid back though.
But all in all a really good day with some great people.

I managed to amuse myself quite a lot looking at young chapel street types in their pretty outfits who's brains were quite clearly being blown apart - while there were a hell of a lot of very straight looking people around for the most past, it was a bit odd seeing folks turned to dribbling messes at 3pm in the afternoon. but to be expected, i suppose.

Not too shabby at all.

^I agree totally. :)
It really was the people that made this years SummaDayze special for me.

* * *

The music - - - as everyone has said, nothing mind-blowing.
De La Soul had me bopping, just for the novelty factor. Absolutely not something I would usually be seeing, so I really enjoyed that.

* * *

The people - - - to me, the sea of clones was expected, so I'm not harbouring any intense feelings of animosity toward them.
Most people were quite polite about the loss of personal space; when someone knocked into me, I generally got an apology and a nice smile. The food stalls were outrageous in the time they took to serve, and the prices - again, it was all expected so it didn't ruffle me really.

* * *

The weather - - - was just lovely. I brought my jacket in with me, just in case [good move on my part - TY Duckboy for taking custody when I didn't need it].
Not too hot, and cool enough so when you stood still in the dancing thumping masses, you could cool the sweat on your brow with a gentle breeze. :D
Any hotter and I would have been uncomfortable.

* * *

Highlights for me include;
*Eating an icy-pole with my boy on the soft grass, just watching people and giggling.
*Long chats with a new friend.
*Sitting near the Foam Pool and having huge floating balls of foam randomly float by my head.
*Rawkin' out to Nirvana - - - I can't help it, it was a cheesy and overplayed mix, but I really really love that song. Makes me all hyper hearing it in any capacity whilst out.

* * *

My overall rating?
Around a solid 8/10. =D

well well well..... u have no idea.

I'm no small man, but I felt like gary coleman when I was there.

Man was it beefcake central.

Other than that, I had a great time. Spent the entire time at housedayze, and caught armin's last two songs and a bit of john course relaxing on the hill. Left 45min early to beat the crowds.

Looooooooooooooooooved moguai's set. F@cking unbelievable. Will definitely see him again @ prince on 22nd.

Had a great time, but it'll need an amazing lineup to get me back next year. Had no idea about the sniffer dogs either! Must have luckily missed them. Did see some poor fella getting escorted off by three policepersons though.
