If one wanted (or needed) to get to sleep while tripping, would taking melatonin (.5, 1, or maybe 1.5 mg) put one to sleep within 20 to 60 minutes as it does sober?

It helps; I've used it in the past but more like 3mg and up. My melatonin pills are 3mg each and if I'm really up I'd take 2 of them.

I've come to like valerian and diazepam though.

I have .5 mg tablets from Trader Joe's that work fine normally. I have seen 3 mg pills but have never tried them. I think 3 mg would be overkill and possibly leave me drowsy the next day.

ur gonna need a lot more than a milligram or two to feel drowsy, melatonin is jack shit compared to a benzo. even 3mg u most likely wont feel any different (jus personal exp)

Melatonin

So here's the deal... Melatonin helps you sleep better once you are there, but it doesn't make you sleepy.

Melatonin+Tryptophan+Valerian = Good night!

Melatonin is strange. I agree with the "ready to sleep feeling" comment.

I have used it for tripping before and it didn't seem to help that much but it has helped others.

When I take it sober about 30-40 mins after I begin to feel a little tired but it seems like there is a window of time where if I don't fall asleep right when I feel it working then it becomes useless.

I agree with it as well. Which means that considering many psychedelics have a stimulating component to them the melatonin couldnt compete with that by far. Melatonin supports going to sleep and thereby changing your biorhythm if necessary but it doesnt induce sleep.
If it does for you, placebo effect might be involved. Still works though in that case, heh.

I imagine the power of placebo is equivalent to a team of the world's best surgeons for some people when they're tripping.

me too. Ive seemed to have slipped into the habit of dipping my finger into a bag of diaz powder daily recently (even after giving you those warnings about addiction and all). Im having Karma hide the diaz from me though. I dont even use it because i enjoy it, its just become habit and most likely a rplacement for pot, which i would normally be using daily.
Valerian is a win though. Makes me feel nice and relaxed and gives me some bizzare dreams

Melatonin doesn't necessarily make me drowsy like weed or a benzo would, it's more of a "ready for sleep" type of feeling... Which makes sense when you consider what it is.

exactly. melatonin has never worked for me quite like a sleeping pill or benzo. Like you said its for when you're ready to sleep. It regulates the sleep cycle, doesnt neccessarilly make you sleepy though.

Your sentiment is not unreasonable stephen but may i add it depends on whether youre full on tripping or have only residual stimulation? the mostly anxiolytic ones are fine for me in the majority of cases since i dont even plan on tripping until i feel the mental journey is at an end.

I would recommend GHB or GBL for sleep if it werent extra addictive when used for this purpose ;)

sweet dreams
jop =D

Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I did word it wrong. It is more of a ready-to-sleep feeling. I have also experienced its effects wearing off after about an hour.

If you experienced it wearing off after an hour you would've have to been awake for it. If you would have fallen asleep like what the melatonin is meant for the sleep itself would then sustain your natural melatonin level supporting a more healthy sleep/wake rhythm (assuming you went to sleep at a healthy hour). This has nothing to do with feeling sleepy i.e. being sedated or influenced by a hypnotic. This is about biological processes mostly beyond the grasp of conscious experience which doesn't mean that the beneficial effects cannot be felt consciously!

dizzying. even talking about it like that makes me sleepy.

Yes, I was talking about staying up for an hour after taking melatonin.

(I wish I could give into my melatonin right now and go to sleep, but no, I have homework...)
