MEGA - Courses and Careers related to Drugs

as long as its not a felony, i imagine you'd be alright.
even if it is, after a certain amount of time (at least 5 years), you should look into getting it expunged
 
^ tathra how do you go about doing that? my husbad has a dui from 5 or 6 yrs ago and its the only thing on his record.

If DUI's kept people out of graduate programs, there would be no professors in the world. ;)
 
haha this is all very encouraging, thank you. i had all but given up on pursuing this.

now i just need to decide if im up to the great challenge it would be compared to my second choice, liberal arts. oh gosh.

and i would also like to hear about how things can be expunged?

you'll have to ask a lawyer or a paralegal. i dont know any of the specifics, but i'm pretty sure it varies from state to state. i need to start looking into it myself actually...
 
I seriously doubt that a DUI would stop you from doing anything College related. However I'm not in the US, and there are some wacky laws over there about any drug related issues. Was the DUI for alcohol, or [other]?

From what I've heard/understand, as long as you don't have anything drug related on your record, you should be fine. Also, I don't think that even having a drug anything on your record would stop you doing the course, it would only maybe stop you getting scholarships/financial assistance.

it was alcohol only. I have just heard that some pharmacy schools consider records as part of the admissions process. and a DUI weighs heavily because the profession requires such good judgement. I think that it could have been worse, and it works to my favor that i got it when I was only 18 because i have all the time until applying to prove that it was a one time lapse in judgement and not a display of general poor character.
 
You have awhile to improve things. As long as you do well in your schooling and don't get another DUI.... I think anyone that would consider hiring you could look past something you did when you were 18.
 
Switching Major to Pharmacy?

So I'm seriously thinking about switching my major from nursing to pharmacy. I'm having second thoughts about wanting to be a CRNA, I feel like I chose that path in the first place for financial (wrong) reasons. A pharmacist seems like a real chill job. I've talked to pharmacists too, it's not all speculation.


I was wondering about the classes in pharmacy programs, though. I would have to take (this is mostly so I can see)
8 hours of organic chemistry (two classes with labs)
4 more hours of general chem (one class and lab)
3 hours calculus
3 hours economics
3 hours verbal skills (is this public speaking?)
6 hours physics (two classes, meh)
6 more hours biology
6 hours anatomy(phys ed classes count, easy).

I could get that done in 2 years.


I dislike chemistry but I could definitely make it through those classes. Chemistry is one of those things that I don't like but am pretty good at anyways. I was wondering about the pharmacy program, once I got accepted, would I be doing a bunch of really hard chemisty shit?

What the hell is biochemistry/biotechnology like?

What about medical chemistry?

Medicinal chemistry?




Is changing my major even worth it? I don't like chemistry much but...do the ends justify the means? Anyone been there before?
 
if you dont like chem you wont like any of the bottom majors you listed. But pharmacy generally requires 1 semester of Medicinal chemistry and Pharmacology, and pharmacognas, and Biochemistry. There is a lot of Biochemistry though in the other classes. But there is a lot of non chemsitry stuff past the first couple of years.
 
Biochem mostly deals with genetics, proteins, metabolism, and the like. Definitely not my cup of tea.

Medicinal Chem is basically the skills you need to make drugs. Not too shabby if you know your basic chem ;)

Medical chem, I'm not sure about. I will assume though, that it is a chemistry-for-medical-students kinda deal.

Even if you're going with pharmacy, I'd still recommend physiology and pharmacology courses. Its so sickening to see a pharmacist who knows very little about the human body or the actions of the drugs he's selling...
 
I would like to become a pharmacy technician

I live in the UK and am interested in becoming a pharmacy technician. I understand that in order to become a technician you have to be employed, part time, by an employer (pharmacist) and you have to do a part time NVQ course at college whilst working - sort of like an apprenticeship.

The problem is that I am currently claiming benefits (income support and disability living allowance) for my mental illness and I if I were to start working and studying, I would lose my benefits. The money I'd get from working would be much less than I get from benefits and it would be difficult to find appropriate accomodation (I'm currently in supported accomodation and receive £133 in housing benefit, which I wouldn't be able to pay out of a pay cheque from working).

Is there any way I can study part time to be a pharmacy technician, then get work experience and finally paid work?

Sorry. If you go to the main index of C&U and go to "Search This Forum", type in "pharmacy technician". There are a few threads regarding what you need to do, schooling, etc. :)

If those don't help, I'll leave this open incase someone pops by.
 
Also Biotechnology is the manipulation of cellular processes to make unrealated processes easier, using enzymes as catalysts for industiral work, using bacteria cells to make antibiotics, and the use of cellular processes to improve crop production. Very heavily involved in Molecular Biology, though Pharmacy does not go into Biotech or Molecular Biology. This work is done mostly in the lab, utilising techniques from molecular Biology like Polymerase Chain Reaction, Cloning and gene sequencing.There is no Medical Chemistry but there is a a Medical Biochemistry which is basically a Biochemitry class that relates the concepts to medical issues like diagnosis and disease.

Anatomy and Physiology I & II are a pre rec for the pharmacy program at most schools, and Pharmacology is usually taught in the 3000 level and above meaning you wont take that at a community college or University while you get ready.

Your forth year in Pharm school is all rotations, where you work in different pharmaceutical enviroments; Hospitals, Psyciatric institutes, Retail, and more Retail. This I beleive is done at zero pay.
 
I dont know too much about what you have to do in UK, but here in the states you pretty much need to be certified through PTCB (www.ptcb.org) and hunt around for a pharmacy that needs help....

Just some advice, I wouldnt claim any kind of mental illness or let them know anything is wrong, they'll also most likely do random quarterly drug test with NO notice.... Unless it required in the UK, i wouldnt waste my time and money on the classes... They make test review books and the material can definitely be self taught.

Not to piss on your parade, but i think your in for a surprise... I dont when the last you talked to a pharmacist, but the insurance companies are starting to get absolute ridiculous, medco and medicaid in particular.... This $4 generic crap that wal-mart started is helping either :!
