[MEGA]Community Growing advice, tips, tricks, & experiences Part 5 (2012-2013)

Ahh thanks AE that makes perfect sense to me. The price is great though so I think I'll give it a go. If I plant outdoors in May then they should finish up by October :)

No I'm talking about outdoors. There is no grow room.

I don't think the nets would be very good for stealth though unless you can get them in green or camo

Under usual circumstances (ie growing strains with similar or identical flowering start times) the technique you described would work outdoors as the males often flower a few weeks earlier. If one was interested in making hack hybrids with sativas and indicas though then flowering start times will be all over the place hence the isolation. I was thinking of just putting one female under the net but the pollen bags are a much better idea for maintaining yield and smokeability

Cannabis is wind pollinated, which means its pollen can travel up to 200 miles with the wind. So I think your best bet is to grow your males out in the open and before dehisence (pollen dropping), snip off a male branch and keep in a cup of water indoors under a desk lamp on 12/12. Hardly amy space would be needed and you won't pollinated your females.

16 plants... gdp, widow, ss... 1000w hps + 400w mh... just set up this room today... still work to do, ducting/venting, and fans and humidity regulation...but its functional :)

Nice room the toad!

I found a few balls on my Cherry Pie, I'm guessing from a light leak. Oh well, I think I got them all, at least I'll have a few dank seeds

thanks... heres a couple more pics... if i didnt get them already 5 weeks flowering id have grown them more before flowering... but still dank... just not as much bud at the end...

What's the theory behind picking the fan leaves off? I usually let mine fall off by late in flower, pretty sure the plant sucks the N out of them if it needs it.

Also with regard to the pollen bag issue I was having. Couldn't find any bags so just isolated the male by moving inside to a window sill and collected and applied pollen by hand on days when there was no wind. There was still some drift and i guess insects may have spread some but seeds appear to be all on the smallest bottom branches almost exclusively right where I wanted them.

I can probably diagnose it with pics but with just a description it would be a crap shoot. So if you can post pics I'll be able to help.

I doubt it's a lighting issue so you can rule that out.

Thank you, sorry i planned on posting a pic the next day but life got very hectic. I resolved the issue, it was a nutrient problem. They're both healthy females in flower now.

Oh and the bubba kush is accually bubba jones as i learned. local bred cross of pre 98 bubba and casey jones.

Cutting off leaves reduces yield because it diminishes the plant's ability to photosynthesize. That is unless you've just harvested the plant.

So it's not something I would recommend. lol.

^ So this would also be true of low N causing the bottom fan leaves to fall? Had this from week 6-8 of flower, not too worried at all but I guess I would have increased yield if my transition from veg nutes to flower nutes was a bit longer so the N stayed up. Either that or I had a bigger container space so I could fit more manure/castings in it.

^ i'm talking specifically about green, healthy leaves.

For some reason there's this idea amongst growers that cutting off fan leaves is a good idea because it gives more light to the bud sites. I don't know where it came from but it's a really bad idea.

If you're leaves are yellowing at the bottom it's better to feed them a grow nutrient than to cut them off though, unless they're beyond getting healthier.

i find the yield to be much higher on the plants i remove fan leaves from.... like double to triple the amount of trimmed bud at harvest as a plant left alone... thats the only reason i go to all the extra work to do it... imo it makes as big or bigger difference than indoor vs outdoor in the quality...
