[MEGA]Community Growing advice, tips, tricks, & experiences Part 5 (2012-2013)

Go for the Kushes. They grow in very, very hardy climates naturally so you can stress the shit out of them without very many consequences. We had amazing luck with Girl Scout Cookies and OG Kush this year (I know they are very similar).

Oh and time to try to harvest the pollen from my afghani's wheeeee. I can't wait, I just hope I my first super skunk isn't too far into flower. I think its on week 5 or 6 now, but the males just don't seem to be mature enough.

Yeah lets see pics if you have any freehugs, that would be cool.

For the guy that asked about strains for outdoors, I agree with justsayknow, autoflowering strains are probably not your best option. You want an early finishing outdoor strain (i.e. one specifically bred for growing outdoors), especially if you live in the northern hemisphere at a latitude similar to the UK where the autumn/fall is wet and causes issues with bud rot (botrytis or grey mould). Look into getting something that is a 'semi-autoflowering strain', not full autoflowering since there is a difference. Outdoor strains are also usually somewhat mould resistant, although it is rare that any strain grown outdoors will be 100% mould free somewhere like the UK, meaning you have to be very observant and cut as soon as you see any but outdoor strains should be able to mature to peak ripening with very little mould.

Here are some classic, tried and tested popular outdoor strains. They are popular for a reason:

* Female Seeds Purple Maroc
* Female Seeds Easy Sativa
* Female Seeds Outdoor grapefruit
* Dutch Passion Frisian Dew
* Arne's Hash Plant or any other outdoor strain by the breeder zen seeds.
* Mr Nice Seeds Early Skunk
* Mr Nice Seeds Early Skunk Haze

Here's a tip for growing outdoor strains - top repeatedly to get multiple colas, since the smaller the cola is, the less likely it will succumb to grey mould in the autumn. And this allows you to spread your risk so if one cola gets hit bad with mould you can immediately chop it off to leave the others intact and mould free.

I'll post some pics when they start maturing more. I have one male and one female left, and the male is starting to turn a little purple since he's outside.

Oh I guess I should add that its a mazaar-i-sharif landrace strain that I got in a seed pack from a dispensary in NorCal.

Questions regarding Indica Dominant Problems.

I have more experience growing strains that are mostly sativa and not so much Indica such as the strains now, so I'm not quite sure if it has anything to do with that but......

STRAIN - Bubba Kush
(1) - Leaves on bottom are drying out and becoming brittle on tips on the very bottom set of fan leaves...... I'm not sure if this is a lighting or nutrient problem......possibly water but i believe i've been adding enough water. This strain is into it's 6th or 7th set tall and around 4-5 wks in.

STRAIN - Wonderwoman
(2)- Tan/yellow specks on fan leaves in middle of plant, not large specs....small and centered in middle to end of leaf. I'm thinking nutrient problem.

Anyone that might have an idea let me know.....TY

I was also thinking possibly a lighting condition where the light isn't hitting the bottom leaf on the Bubba Kush plant.... i'm kindof up in arms as to the problem with it. It's an otherwise healthy plant, it will make it but anything to not stress my girls.

Also if someone wants to help or thinks it would be a help i can post some pics tommorrow.

I can probably diagnose it with pics but with just a description it would be a crap shoot. So if you can post pics I'll be able to help.

I doubt it's a lighting issue so you can rule that out.

What do you use to feed, and how often?

Oh and AE, I found a site selling Sativa Landraces. I think I'm going to get a pack of Malawi Gold or Mulanje Gold and experiment with crossing them with my Afghani male and female :)

Will be cool to see the offspring from that cross. I saw some tests somewhere of one Malawi specimen that had 23% thc. I don't imagine all the seeds from it would be that strong but it would probably be good for your project.
Not all malawian weed is crazy like that though, the stuff I've smoked has been average strength but nice and "up"

Hopefully will get to see results from a pakistan chitral kush x sativa bagseed this autumn, a friend is growing it out. 1st time pollinating on purpose so will be interested to see what it went like.

MASSIVE thanks to AE and justsayknow. Much appreciated guys. Ill have a look into the ones you recommended & let you guys know how i go. Im in Australia by the way

Steelyj I take it you don't need help with your issue anymore? You never posted back so I assume you solved the problem.

Malawi weed is known to contain significant amounts of THCV, which is a particularly psychedelic cannabinoid that has some very interesting properties including appetite suppression, making it great for people who don't want the munchies.

Can you PM me the site? I'll be interested in hearing where you found it. Be careful because 99% of all seedbanks/seed websites claiming to sell 'landraces' are fake. They usually just substitute it with some random hybrid and hope nobody ends up noticing.

I'm going for the THCV :D

And yeah I pmed ya. Opinions were varied, but I think it will be legit.

Hey freehugs, if I'm honest my first impression when looking at that site is that it looks really sketchy. Especially since he doesn't list breeder names and just has loads of random strains with no name breeders. That alone makes me very suspicious.

I may be wrong though!

edit: you're right though, he does get some good reviews as well as some bad. So who knows! I hope you get what you're looking for!

He is the breeder, that's why. It isn't a seedbank. But yeah I thought it was too good to be true but many people have had great results so I'm going to give it a try. Too bad I don't have enough time to start one before my lease runs out oh wellllll.

You might be limited with seed co's that will send to Australia not to mention things getting confiscated by customs. Caution is recommended. If you do order from over seas get some advice from the seed co about stealth packaging and whether they guarantee delivery etc.

He's mixed his own strains with other strains that are from breeders like TGA. All are mixed up.

What I meant by the comment is that I was suspicious simply because of the sheer number of strains that he's supposedly bred himself. I'm not saying it's not possible but even with a whole team of people and acres upon acres of land, it's hard to get the resources to properly breed that many strains. Especially if there is not a common breeding male being used (the strains are completely different from each other so this isn't the case).

More likely what he has done is made either hacks or selfed female plants and sold them as proper strains that he is supposed to have bred himself.

I really hope I'm wrong though because I hate to see anyone get ripped off. And the fact that there have been some positive reviews is a good sign, so don't worry yet. Do let us know how you get on whatever the outcome.

By hacks you mean taking two preexisting strains and producing hybrid seeds with out any selection? Or simply reproducing someone else's strain and selling at as your own.

Has anybody tried those pollen nets they make for chilli isolation on male cannabis outdoors? Will they stop pollen escaping and entering?

Both really. But the term usually more often applies to the former.

You want to buy or make pollination bags instead. The ones you can buy are ideal but you can make them yourself if you're that determined, using unbleached vegetable parchment paper (surprisingly hard to find) and a special transparent plastic window for viewing the cola that is resistant to rotting or warping with high temps and humidity. The ones I bought are probably better than anything I could make and they were cheap too.

Pollination bags sound great thanks for the suggestion, I should use those also but my first issue is isolation. At present I have only been able to do this by growing males out of season.

I was thinking isolation nets as I don't have even 1 grow room let alone 2 and so far fresh live pollen seems to be the most effective. I'm probably going to get some anyway to try with chilli so I might give them a whirl.

I suppose a male would survive on a window sill or similar too so that might be my other option.

You're growing indoors? In that case I wouldn't bother with pollination bags or isolation cages at all. Just flower the male and cut off a branch before the flowers open and the pollen drops and put it in a cup of water on a piece of glass with a small 20W CFL with no fans or moving air and collect it with a razor blade. Dispose carefully of the rest of the plant you won't be using so as not to contaminate your females. You can easily do this in the corner of a room - you don't need a grow area to harvest the pollen from the branch.

Outdoors pollination bags are used over female colas to keep pollen inside while it fertilises the female flowers.
