Since when is it normal to value other creatures solely by their ability to make us happy?

Not soley of course, but it has a lot to do with it. Would you hang around people you hated? Marry someone who in no way shape or form pleased you(mentally, physically, whatever)

First off taunto it is the owner who makes the dog a biter. Head of the "pack" if you wanna call it that. But let me break it down for you Kyk(I'm Jewish and offended btw) real simple like.

barking>meowing
growling>hissing
licking>purring
slobber/druel>hairballs
pooper=scoopers(if you even must use them)>litter boxes
Kennel cough>cat scratch fever
chewed furniture>clawed furniture

You are such a ball buster, dude.

My dog TRIES to bite when anyone comes into OUR home. He recedes upon command. I don't make him a biter, he came that way to use at 8 months. I control it ;) He does not display aggressive behaviour in the car, in the dog park, nor at other people's homes.

I think the best way to understand the difference between cats and dogs is this.

If you own a dog, when you come home from work and that dog is on your chair, it looks up and sees you and jumps right down with a look on its face of "Oh shit, Im sorry man, I was just getting it warm for you".

If you own a cat, when you get home from work and that cat is on your chair, it looks up and sees you and sits right there with a look on its face of "what do you want asshole? Hurry up and get me some milk and clean my shit up".

So true!!

ya but at least you know that cat didn't take a steaming turd on the chair earlier on in the day 8)

I love dogs.
Why?
1) when I was like 3 years old a cat scratched the shit out of my face, actually, sunk its claw almost clear into my mouth. It took me a while to forgive cats for that lol.
2) I'm allergic to cats. I wish I could cuddle them more..but I sneeze, and they scratch
3) I've had my dog for over ten years and we're so close :)
4) Dogs are loving loyal etc. cats couldn't care less about your bitch ass... They won't lick you awake when you pass out on the floor...

lol, I think you have your dogs and cats muddled up.

Whats an evolutionary letter? If its "A" or "B" or even "C" then i cant argue but from D onwards well obviously Dog is closer.

I suspect both are equally as good at foraging as is indicated by the fact they got this far in history.

Dogs also have there own personality.

Purebred Cats, just like purebred Dogs have been inbred for years and years. Funny that.

Most dogs have been bred for working at a very specific purpose such as herding sheep or cows or companions or fetching game etc.

I cannot think of a single cat that has been bred for anything other than its looks...............They are the ultimate novelty item.

A cat vs a dog in the thinking stakes is a no brainer........... Pointless even bothering to argue that.

Cats are there when you need them? For what? To fetch your slippers? To get the sheep in? To protect you from that person thats about to clonk you over the head?

There should be a law allowing cats to be culled. They are the single most destructive animal on the planet.

And they stink worse than any other pet.

Weird, I somehow missed this post.

Maz, I will make a couple points. First, while it's true that some dog breeds are capable of surviving in a natural environment, I'd argue that a great many are beyond useless without human assistance. Released into the wild and left to the impartial laws of natural selection, I reckon 99% would die before making a contribution to their genus. Heck, the American Bulldog cannot even whelp unassisted. This is an insult to the literal definition of biological fitness.

On the other hand, the African wildcat (Felis silvestris) to this day occur in natural populations. As seen below, very little difference exists between this and your average feral stray. Almost all genetic markers are intact, and this goes for both look and behaviour.

Comparatively, looking at just about any dog viewed vis a vis to the grey wolf (Canis lupus), and you will clearly see that dogs have been subjected much more harshly to the pressures of human artificial selection.

That said, cats have also felt the cold hand of conformation breeding. In particular the Persian with its unnatural "extreme" squished face, the Scottish Fold, several hairless 'hypoallergenic' breeds, and the "Munchkin".

The worst part is, breeders continue trying to legitimize their perverse creations with kennel clubs simply because there is a fanciers market. Like they're creating the newest widget or iPod. In this fashion, we feed our once noble friends through the gears and winches of capital gain.

Ultimately, your reasons for preferring dogs over cats suffers from anthrocentrism. Unwittingly perhaps, you are contributing to what I feel is a growing problem -- that is, through self interest, we are losing the symbiotic respect that brought man and beast together in the first place.

Firstly. Great post.

Now.......... I would have to agree that given one of each animal being allowed to go free that my money would be on the cat to survive longest or at least have the best survival instincts...........probably live like kings actually.

Unfortunately thats also one of there bad traits as they kill many native animals and also as you have suggested, are quite a massive problem as there is a huge feral contingency, certainly in this country anyways.

In regards to breeders, well thats another "pet" hate of mine. I cannot for the life of me understand how these fools can justify some of the animals they create. And it goes for dogs and cats. So I agree regards the widget etc.

I think your call of anthrocentrism is pretty harsh and indeed way off the mark. My comments were simply rebutting your arguments with truth although I cede the argument re wilderness survival.

I own two dogs, a poodle border collie cross and a pure bred border collie. They are trained to a level where they are able to heel off lead in public and they are both probably best described as companion dogs.
They get the chance to run and walk off lead in our local parks in the morning aand then play with other dogs in an official off lead area locally as well as enjoy a fairly large sized yard and when i am home they stay inside with me.
We go away on weekends together at least once a month. Last trip was two weeks ago to the beach and its the same this weekend. Last Month we went snowing together.

I dislike both, and apparently I'm the only person on bluelight with this opinion. But if I was forced to pick, I'd say cats are better.

The reasons why I dislike:

Both: They make a huge mess. They pee and poop all over the place. They bite and scratch. They stink and get hair all over clothes and furniture. I don't understand why people want to keep pets.

Dogs: They are so noisy. My neighbors dogs bark constantly and keep me up at night. They chase me when I walk by their house. Dogs are clingy and annoying, and they demand constant attention. They regularly flip my trash cans over and throw the contents all over my yard. They bite when you get near their food. They attack other dogs and animals. Dogs are really good at protecting houses though. They are like a living alarm system.

Cats: They can be really noisy too, especially if they are not fixed. Their litter boxes stink.

Yes, yes you are. You are weird. The End :|
;) :)

But seriously, your neighbours sound like the absolute WORST kind of pet owners, no wonder you have such a distorted attitude about pets!! The reason those dogs act like that is because they are fucking BORED and UNTRAINED. It is not the dogs' fault, it's 100% the owner's fault.

I am still convinced that if you met my cat Smoodge, you'd love him ;) <3

You would dig my cat BillyReuben. Everyone who meets him does....even the ones with allergies. They say he should be a show kitty. I fear I would be a pushy stagemom LOL!

I really like a bunch of cats. Smoodge looks like a champion and BillyReuben smells like a winner. Both yall's cats seem cool. Just when your own cat hisses and swats at you for no reason.... :X

I swear I was nothing but nice to that cat, honest. Even once it started getting testy with me i just ignored her, I dind't even tease/taunt her or anything. She was just evil.
