Just a quick update (for those who care ;))

I am extremely happy with my choice of Mussolini as my new family member! It really could not be a better match.
At first I was a little worried he didn't like humans ... or would never warm up to me, but everyday he gets more relaxed and recognizes who I am. It is so cute when he starts he little guinea pig "talk" begging for food every time he hears a plastic bag. Or if i set him down on my couch and walk into the next room he cries till I get my ass back in the room so he can see me. So adorable!
I bring him to my mothers house with me all the time too, so he can socialize with more then just me, since i rarely have company over at my apt (i work 3rd shift so my social life tends to lack). My mother has a cat who is 8 years old, fat, and grumpy who has never gotten along with another cat let alone another animal in it's life, but she finally has made a friend. She loves to lay next to Mussolini and watch him play. She has never pawed or hissed at him. Miracles do happen ...

This Monday, I am going to go out and find Mussolini a friend. So everyone start thinking of new names! (it'll be a male of course)

Does anyone know, would the pet store I adopted Mussolini from, allow me to bring him back in with me to see if there is any other pigs he gets along with or interacts with better then others?
I'd hate to bring a new pig home, and find out that the other pig does not get along with other males. I know there is a 14 day return policy, if that situation arises. I am hoping mine will be fine, since he is quite young, and lived with 5 other males when I got him. But you never know.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions on making a home made cage for them? I currently use a standard cage that you find at any store, but obviously that is not enough room for two pigs. I would like to somehow use my existing cage in with the new one I build if it is possible, but not sure how I would do that without having to cut the metal bars.
I am currently leaning on the "cube shelf" designs. I work at a department store, so I can get a lot of the cubes for cheap on clearance.
a few pictures of what I am talking about
But any other suggestions on styles/materials I should consider, I am all ears.

first of all, i'm so glad you're happy with your pig! it is exciting when they recognize you and start to 'talk' to you. he warmed up to you quite quickly.

i'm not sure about any other pet stores, but i know that at petco, there's a 30 return policy to get money back. however, you can always return an animal for any reason after that period. no $ back, but they will accept them and find them another home. i don't know about bringing your current pig in to help with the shopping process. i guess you can call ahead to see what their policy is?

happy shopping/adopting!:)

It probably says a lot about my life at the moment... but... this news has made my day :D
And I think it just has to be Franco. eDDe9 is inspired.
The store may not want an other animal brought in due to risk of spread of disease, besides I don't think you'd learn much from the exercise. Just choose the cutest one, or the most Franco-esque one, bring him home and make Mussolinis day too :)
(make sure they have enough space to help minimise stress/ chance of fights)

lol, soon you'll be naming every new Bluelighter pets and then babies too! :D

I do like Franco as a name too. I think Mussolini and Franco sound good together.

I got my new guinea pig this morning! I went to the store and as soon as I seen him, i feel in love. you have never seen a cuter animal!

I will take a few photos later and post them on here for you all to see ... if any of you think it looks like a Franco ... then I think I might have to go with that name for him.

:)

Sorry about the red eye ... his eyes are actually completely black

awww, I think he definitely looks like a Franco :D

This thread is totally making me want a guinea pig. Perhaps, when I get a larger apartment... :)

Sort of looks like a Batista, but I think Franco is a much better name in general

They are so cute though :)

Yay! Bienvenido Franco! How has Mussolini accepted him so far?

yah they got along right away. Mussolini jumped on top of him at first and held him down for a while to show who was the dominate one.
they are by each other nonstop ... if one leaves the cage to their "play yard" the other is right behind.
they cuddle up in the same "house" together too, even though there are two diff ones.
hearing them "talk" is so fucking cute too! i brought them both out on my bed this morning and let the play, they got excited and both started popcorning for a good 10 min.

PS: Franco it is! :)

Is it normal for Mussolini to be extremely jealous? Franco and him get along fine, untill I put my hand anywhere by them, Mussolini will always jump to be the first one to me, and if I go to touch Franco, Mussolini will jump literally ontop of Franco to get him out of the way. If i hold both of them, the Mussolini always has to be the one closest to me, getting all the attention. Even when I put food and treats out, Mussolini will dominate all till after I walk away, then he moves over and lets Franco eat.

You can tell Mussolini is def the dominating GP in their relationship, but it just seems when I am around him, he goes into overdrive with this behavior.

Don't worry. Mussolini likes to control everything in the early days, but will delegate himself to too many things and lose his control over Franco

ok, since this is in the right place now jj (;):)), ill be honest. used to have fishies a long time ago, and as a kid i remember my uncles saltwater tank and i was in love. i loved all the beautiful colors of saltwater fish.

i also remember another uncle having oscar sharks (i think thats what they were called, ill find out) and they were fuckin badass too. freshwater though.

i hope to get a tank someday, a saltwater tank. but i need to get one when i have the cash and time to take care of it.

nice pics jj. :D
