Medications and constipation

Hi, i am a recovering heroin addict. Since i have been sober this time, i have been put on a few medications. My psych has me on Zoloft for my depression, Seroquel for my insomnia, Suboxone for my cravings and Equetro as a mood stabilizer. Since i have been on these meds, i have been severely constipated, and have been having a very tough time urinating. When i was doing dope, i would get the same symptoms but i didnt care. I have looked up the side effects for all my meds and all of them list constipation and trouble urinating. I went over a week without a bowel movement, i tried stool softeners and laxatives and nothing worked. I was in so much pain finally i had to use a suppository to get some relief. Ive been thinking that the Suboxone is the main cause for my symptoms but maybe the Seroquel too. I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with this, and also, some ways to avoid the constipation or even just some ways to make it better. Any certain foods i should be eating, or foods i should be avoiding? Maybe a certain diet i should go on. Any medications i could ask my doctor for? I just need some kind of help. I know there is probably not a way to help the trouble urinating but that is okay because eventually i can go but i am concerned eith the contipation. Any, and all feedback is greatly appreciated. If you even have a small suggestion or anything please give some feedback. Thankyou!

Hey Jacob and WELCOME from a fellow newby!

Ah, yes...evil treatment-resistant constipation...my constant companion. My story is long, no need to repeat. You can research my name and read if you like.

I have IBD, multiple surgeries due to stage 4 endo, SO...constipation is something I have to deal with FOREVER. I can only offer some suggestions, though my GI is surgically altered. I don't absorb pain meds, yet I get the horrid SE of intensified constipation.

I have definitely made the connection that when my bowels haven't moved and my tummy is distended...hmmm...It's difficult to completely empty my bladder.

For a "normal" anatomy, fiber intake, drinking plenty of water, regular exercise would ease the constipation. Mine is not "normal". If the fiber is not soluble, it creates what I joke is a "hay turd" that I can't birth. :! Miralax is a great OTC powder that you mix in drink of choice. It dissolves in juice, coffee or water and is tasteless. It draws water into the hard stool that is clogging your colon. It's inexpensive, available in store brand as ClearLax. It won't work instantly, but should be helpful as maintenance once you've cleaned your system out.

For instant (within hours) an OTC enema or glycerine ampules. My go-to is Magnesium Citrate citrus flavored liquid. It's at your dollar store for less than $2. Drink 1/2 bottle...wait...if no poop...drink second half. My doctor has me take this plus several Dulcolax for colonoscopy prep. I don't think you'll need the Dulcolax, unless the MC doesn't give you relief. Don't take this cocktail at night unless you have a diaper handy!

Note: My doctor suggested mixing the Miralax in apple juice...but it's up to you. It's not gross, otherwise I'd projectile vomit!

Don't let this go too long, or you could experience an intestinal blockage. Try the MC liquid today. Depending on results (or lack thereof) take more. Then start a program of Miralax as part of your morning routine.

My PM doctor failed to warn me that opiates cause constipation, even though he KNEW I suffer IBD. I've had some super close calls to obstruction surgery.

I hope some of this works for you. Believe me, I FEEL YOUR PAIN. :\

Thank you very much! I just took the suppository 2 days ago and was able to empty myself pretty well i would say. My grandfather also suggested the miralax as a morning routine so i went out and bought myself some that i plan on starting tomorrow when i wake up. Im sorry you constantly have to go through this pain. Idk what i would do. But once again thank you so much for your help!
