Mangas/Animes about drugs?

Probably not many, because the Japanese culture is very anti drug. Long jail sentences for possession of small amounts of pot and stuff like that. That's why if you want anything you gotta smuggle it in or go through the Yakuza. I'm sure there are some anime about drugs but I haven't come across yet.

Now are anime fun to watch on drugs? Hell fuckin yeah!

Not a whole lot of drug use in japan, apparently the main drugs of abuse are benzodiazepines, which isn't much really.

They drink and smoke like crazy though.

Akira wasn't about drugs, but they played a big role in them. Kaneda had that big ass pill on the back of his jacket (kinda like a weed leaf you see kids sporting lol). I figure it's one of the gang's central activities.

Tetsuo takes a bunch from the bartender before killing him. Also, I just found out that in the manga, the scientists got Tetsuo hooked on pills to keep him in check.

In code geass there's a drug called refrain which is like heroin, but the anime isn't about it per se

In the manga "Welcome to the N.H.K" a manga about social anxiety and mental illness the main character abuses RC hallucinogens ordered from the internet and also speed. It doesn't play too deep a part of the plot but it's there.

The anime changes this to ginseng or something if I remember right and the hallucinations are changed to just the characters mental illness.

There are pills in Naruto called hyurogan that are based on the meth pills used by the Japanese in WWII that have the same effects essentially.

I absolutely LOVE watching anime (AND reading manga) while Im tripping. More specifically, dissociated! Such a fun and intense experience.

But other than the occasional drinking sake and being drunk, or drugs that SEEM like real drugs that give boosts in ability and energy, there hasnt been any that I have seen.

THOUGH, "Dead Leaves," an anime movie, sure seems like it's made to be watched on drugs, which I did, and freaked out haha.

There's a classic samurai anime thats a bit older (Why cant I think of it's name?) that the rival samurai take a drug that makes it so they feel virtually no pain. But its not based on that nor is it trippy or seem to have any euphoric or psychoactive properties.

So glad to see anime/manga mentioned here haha funny I got so into it after being an adult.

wow I definitely gotta check that one out! Internet RC's, hell yeah! :D haha sounds interesting, though.

It's not about drugs but Serial Experiments Lain does touch on allot of the questions people tend to ask them selves on psychedelics.
The show has a very weird and interesting atmosphere definitely worth checking out.

In one scene it shows someone in a techno club buying and taking this nanomachine drug called accela.

I just remembered that there is a drug (performance enhancing rather than fucked-up getting) called Redeye in Cowboy Bebop. Dunno how that slipped my mind. The series as a whole isn't drug related though.

"World Record" from The Animatrix centers around an Olympic sprinter who had his gold medal and world record stripped due to using performance enhancers. It doesn't show any drug use, but his embarassment drives the entire narrative. Very cool story imo

@Bigfan - much appreciated. I'm not a huge anime fan, but Akira was one of those rare creations that had me thinking for many weeks afterwards. It's an incrediblly imaginative take on a dystopian megacity.

In japanese video games:

- Solid Snake of Metal Gear Solid fame takes some diazepam (Valium) to smooth his aiming.

- Cid in Final Fantasy VII ends each battle by lighting a new cigarette.

I remember watching a anime movie called "silent sword" or "silent warrior" idk. Any way during the movie you see the bad guys pop these lil black pills, they might even be lil black opium balls.

So later on in the flick the "good " guys are torturing the BG. They burn him with a red hot metal rod. Yet he feels no pain and just laughs at them. A day passes and the same man is throwing up and shivering and looks to be hurting bad and the "Good" guys aren't even touching him and they're all like "wtf is wrong with him?". I'm pretty sure the badddy was going into opiate withdrawals. The movie make no mention of that but any one who knows W/D knows that the baddy had them.

It just came to my mind that episode of samurai champloo where they eat some mushrooms and it seems like they go on a sort of weird trip and in the end they get smashed with an asteroid.. but it isn't really explain wether it's because of the shrooms or what..
