For anyone in the Boston / MA area. This happened a few weeks ago but it's caused some problems around the way.
"A Chelsea man is in custody and could face deportation after state and Boston cops, working on a tip in East Boston, found him trying to stuff two bags filled with nearly 43 pounds of heroin, worth about $5 million, into a secret compartment of a minivan, authorities say.
Miguel Antonio Rivera, 35, was ordered held on $200,000 cash bail following his arraignment today in East Boston District Court, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of trafficking in more than 200 grams of heroin near a playground.
Sporting three fake IDs at the time of his Halloween arrest, including a Puerto Rico driver’s license and BJ’s store card with another man’s name, Rivera was also ordered to surrender his passport, authorities said. Rivera is in the country illegally, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have filed a detainer against him, meaning if he somehow posts bail, he’d likely be placed into their custody.
The driver of the minivan, 49-year-old Santa Cruz of Norwalk, Conn., is expected to be arraigned tomorrow or at a later date on charges of possession with the intent to distribute a Class A substance, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. It’s unclear if she is currently being held.
“This seizure takes about $5 million worth of heroin off of Boston’s streets, but there’s no doubt that it would have been sold and distributed well beyond city limits,” Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said in statement.
According to prosecutors, Boston police were doing surveillance on Sumner Street yesterday when they saw a black minivan with Maryland plates parked on the wrong side of the road and then make an illegal turn after picking up Rivera.
When a pair of state troopers stopped it, Rivera refused to get out and instead tried hiding a duffel bag inside one of the vehicle’s compartments before the troopers pulled him from the van, police said.
Inside, police said they found 15 individual bricks of heroin wrapped in tinfoil, weighing just under 43 pounds. On Rivera, officers also found the fake IDs, $623 in cash and in speaking with ICE, determined he was in the country illegally, according to a police report.
When reached by phone, Rivera’s lawyer declined comment this afternoon.
Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said the arrests send a “powerful message” to the city’s drug peddlers that police will “find you and lock you up.”
