let's have a writing workshop

Hydro/Max - is it alright with you if I create the workshop threads and work out a schedule for workshops so that people know what's going on? There seems to be some confusion.

As for me doing a workshop tomorrow, I think it makes more sense to extend xxxyyy's workshop for another week since we already have his story. So week 1, from the 9th of July to the 16th of July, would be Max Power and xxxyyy. Then week 2, would be hydro and myself. And so on, and so forth. Assuming that's okay with everyone. I'm happy to do mine whenever, though the story I was planning on submitting for the workshop just got published in a journal. So I need to come up with something else.

Hydro: I am not confident that we will do two workshops per week. Quite the opposite. The point of having two people lined up is: I am not confident that we will get one submission per week. The second workshop functions as a backup so that we always have something to work with. Personally I didn't workshop the rough draft provided, simply because xxxyyy said he had another one coming. Otherwise I would have. Also, this workshop needs to be a little bit better organized. We can't expect people to read through five pages of a thread to find out who is doing what. And there is no workshop thread for xxxyyy. There should be. I will create two separate workshop threads in the next 24 hours. One for Max Power and one for xxxyyy.

Here is my proposed schedule:

Week 1 ( 9/7-15/7 ) - Max Power/ xxxyyy
Week 2 ( 16/7-22/7 ) - Hydro/ ForEverAfter
Week 3 ( 23/7-29/7 ) - thujone/ Thou
Week 4 ( 30/7-5/8 ) - Volunteers?

:)

aren't you oddly capable of being sweet. there was no workshop thread for xxxyyy because he just posted his story today and no one said anything when asked about just using his rough draft. so maybe you're right; we might need some leniency. i don't think two is ideal. but it's time to make it happen. a yea from me to your proposed schedule.

and congrats on getting your story published!

Yeah, congrats on the publication! Which mag did it end up in? I'd like to read it if you care to share :)

i see we have our first workshop thread. thanks ForEverAfter. looks good. i also wanted to mention that those having their pieces workshopped might want to consider the advantages of chiming in as little as possible during the workshop. allows you to see how your text stands on its own.

Sorry guys, really shitty day yesterday. Will post mine this evening, assuming I make it through the day.

sorry, i meant later than that. i thought there were more participants. i can't even contemplate writing anything half serious before september, not unless you want me to show you one of my essays. :\

I'd actually prefer it if the story was on mediafire. That way, there's a file I can work with. Posting it into the thread means I have to copy it into a file, then fix the formatting (add tabs) and print it out. I've uploaded a file version into mediafire and included a link in your workshop thread. Sorry to hear you're having a hard time, man. Hope shit gets better soon.

L2R, I put you in week 8, you lazy bastard.

this is a method I use for writing fiction with a deadline approaching:

1) generate ideas for a plot by engaging in activities you wouldn't normally pursue. bonus points if it involves meeting new people. all nature is full of challenges, and all lives are full of stories.

2) set aside two hours a day to write. even if you aren't writing anything you'd think is brilliant, the mere act of writing will help refine the plot. it gets a lot easier to keep writing once you figure out where it's all leading.

3) devote all the remaining time to editing, which should work out to more hours than #1 and #2 combined. editing is where all the junk you wrote in #2 gets refined and replaced with the brilliant stuff you want to see in your writing. this step is the most challenging because it's the place where you have to rise to your own expectations, but it's also made easy by the fact that the previous steps have corralled the story and all that's left is to refine the language and cull the inconsistencies. the reason editing takes the longest is because it can only be done a small portion at a time for max effect.

Not that this method isn't used in all writing, but tying each step to a concrete schedule makes good writing happen faster, IME.

Can't say I'm really impressed with everyone's contributions to the workshop threads. So far, only two members have provided feedback - me and thujone. It's weird. This "let's have a workshop thread" got heaps of responses. But the actual workshops have gotten very little attention. There is now a bit over two days left to provide feedback for the first round. It's possible that everyone's waiting till the last minute, but that seems optimistic. Hydro and Max, I find it a bit odd that you guys - in particular - haven't provided any feedback, considering it was your initiative that got the ball rolling in the first place.

Come on, people. You don't have to provide a thousand words worth of notes, or an annotated edit, or anything like that. All you've got to do is read the stories and put in your 2 cents about how they can be improved. It's not that difficult. Here are the links, again:

"iDate" by Max Power

"Love Rhymes with Hideous Car Wreck" by xxxyyy

Remember, if you've signed up to have your stuff workshopped, you are expected to contribute to the other workshops. It's a "you scratch my back and I'll scratch your nutsack" kind of deal.

Dude, I've been without internet in my apartment for the past few days now. I'm at a McDonalds right now, FFS! ;)

I forgot you said you've had a hard week. Just trying to prompt some more feedback. My sole motivation is to get the workshop to work. If I have to set somebody's cat on fire, in order to get this to happen, I will. Glad to see it's not going to come to that, in your case. Thanks for the contributions. Good old free McDonald's wi-fi! Public masturbation and cheeseburgers will always go hand in hand, for me... Literally.

i will do my best to contribute and provide feedback. i enjoyed writing the story although it certainly got a bit formulaic towards the end.

I'm sorry I was cut short 5 days klonopin withdrawal, having a hard time making it. I will give my promised contributions to the workshop threads tomorrow morning promise.

You'd better, Thou. Otherwise I'll castrate your father and graft his balls onto your forehead. Then wave some pepper under your nose. And force you to sneeze repeatedly into your mother's vagina, thereby conceiving a mucous incest baby that is both your sibling and child.

I have a small family, so even if I do, could you do that anyhow? It's lonely round' these parts.

And good luck finding my father lol
