on the subject of drugs causing different breathing patterns,
with stimulants i say that after injuring my back i have to relax more and i unconsciously breath slower when using stimulants because if not i get tense... i think some day they are going to find out that people respond differently to different drugs because it triggers different breathing patterns. this will cause different chemicals in the brain to be released... i would believe that the people with the more relaxed breathing patterns would get objectively higher with what is happening with brain chemistry but i'm really not certain. i guess breathing the wrong way can cause people to panic and have psychedelic experiences if they are crazy enough. generally not my experience, breathing the wrong way just leads me to feel like shit.
i really recommend the book the science of breath, and i recommend experimenting and observing breathing patterns... i wouldn't really recommend taking stimulants and trying to breath slower and become more relaxed unless they really are experienced and know how their body responds. just trying the breathing techniques in the book the science of breath ime can be pretty stressful on the body.. i wouldn't try to use the practices in that book with out a lot of prior experience on stimulants, or downers in higher doses than you were to take when trying these new breathing patterns. it may not be a good idea to try to manipulate highs by forced breathing on drugs. you could really stress yourself and that might be dangerous. i guess if you are a junky and want to try to meditate when you use your DOC that it might be helpful and you could possibly use less of the drug... i feel especially with stimulants that experimenting with certain breathing patterns might cause stress on the heart. i'm really not sure.
i don't know if science is really ever going to be able to tell what exactly is going on with people's brains. i feel like there's a lot of subtle stuff with breathing and the brain chemistry which can make drugs different, but if you were to hook people up to machines that measure this stuff, most people are going to be thinking too much and not get the same experience that they would when not hooked up to a machine.
