I work for a research company....
You can keep in mind that some research is considered classified due to risk of patent infringement as to what your doing with it.
I had to sign a nondisclosure agreement for my job.
So you might be able to pull out something along the lines of "im doing plant research, this is part of it, and other than that, due to the possibility of patent infringement I can not go more in depth than that."
But generally do not even tell the cops what it is, if they can find nothing to charge you with, they have a problem. the area is so grey its amazing. Your case of it being not for human consumption is better assuming its a baggie of powder and not gel caps, and no scale is present. Even better if you can get your vendor to ship you out of Certificate of Analysis, and MSDS for the batch, but unless your dealing directly with the chemist in china or wherever that is difficult.
I mean it really is possible to get pulled over with strange research crap in your car.... If i have to leave work before fedex or ups gets there outgoing packages have to be dropped off. Should i get pulled over between work and the ups store, i might have a few cases of human tissue and some other stuff.... Granted biologic things have to be labeled specifically....
Or hell, find some biological stickers and package things up before you decide to drive with them. Cops are not going to open your mail. They are really not going to open your mail if it has a sticker that says "UN3373 Class B Biological". I would avoid biohazard and radioactive stuff, no one is going to open either but they might question why you are moving such things...
