Opioids Kicking Oxy/Dope Habit with Tramadol?

Hey i have a serious question about tramadol and oxycodone. ok i have a screw through my hip and femur bone so i have chronic pain. ive been on tons of diff. pain meds after my surgery. but then stopped for a bit. anyways i was prescribed 120 tramadol 50 mgs and told to take as needed for hip pain. taking three of them actually made me feel a bit high and itchy but didnt help with pain so next time we got my dr to prescribe oxycodone 5 mg pills. they gave me 40 a month at first. taking 2 -3 pills a day really helped my pain so sumtimes i would run out a little early. so my mom suggested to the doctor we go up on the amount of pils. the dr was being ivestigated by the dea and got mad at me and refused to right anymore oxy after i had been on it for 6 months. so i asked her for atleast sum tramadol and she gave me them.. the tramadol didnt work so good so i ussually had to take 4 - 8 and i always ran out early. but next time the dr upped my dose to 4 tramadols 50 mg each day. i started taking like 8 a day cuz that was what helped the pain. at first it made me high but it went away very fast after a few days of taking 8 a day.sumtimes it would make me throw up. anyways i continued taking 4-8 tramadols every day for 5 months. when i had no tramadol i would buy oxy off tha street, sumtimes tar to smoke, (rarely), and ussually i had a supply of 4 mg dilaudids which i took or snorted. when i didnt hav anything else sumtimes i took 10 mg methadone pills or went to the er to get a script for 30-50 percocet. it took about 6 percs to get me a little high. running out of tramadol and having nothing else was hell, it made me sick the tramadol has a very weird withdrawl. anyways on tha 5th month after they took away my oxy, i finally got to see a new dr. she gave me 90 of my old oxycodone 5 mgs. anyway in the past few days before i saw the dr i had been taking about 12 tramadols a day. now im off tramadol but i have to take 10 oxycodone 5 mg to even get the same effect as 12 tramadol? is that normal? does tramadol inccrease your opiate tolerance to oxycodone as well?

ha, i didn't say it was like the medically recognized cure. i know people it has worked for though- not just like drinking until you pass out--more like starting to socialize at bars w/ friends again, that type of thing, and again, i noted it was a less healthy alternative. however, substitution in any form can be a viable option for ending an opiate addiction if that's the ultimate goal. please do not read that to be an endorsement of alcoholism over opiate abuse or anything like that, but if you're not going the completely sober route, why not try to enjoy some of the other means of chemical relief if it helps take your focus off of strictly opiates and you are careful not to let them develop into the same type of habit

[i know this is not what most treatment centers or whatever would recommend. i'm just saying that in reality it can be helpful in breaking the cycle of a particular addiction. if you're part of a program/treatment that views all mind-altering drugs the same, this is probably not a viable option, but come on- everybody has some friend that used to get too fucked up on whatever until he got really into weed. that guy is probably better off even though he subbed one drug for another]

usually heroin is part of a poly drug addiction.....and is very easy to replace one addiction for another....dont get me wrong, i understand what you are saying, and it can be true in some cases....just not many imho....

drinking will just lead to relapse, as getting intoxicated makes you make bad choices.... generally speaking.....

id say cannabis is a better alternative in this situation.....

haha weedz like an old friend u can always go back to. for me anyways. haha

in the acute withdrawal phase, marijuana can be hellish, but I agree, it is awesome, non-toxic, and you can always go back to it.

try going to the bar and not drinking... I'm used to not drinking too much anyways since being on opiates makes me not want to drink, as well as during Acute withdrawal, and then Post Acute WD.

I think vigorous aerobic exercise is the very best thing you can do during and after withdrawals, it really gets your endigenous opiods back on track and helps you down--regulate more quickly.

skag, i completely agree with you, and i totally understand the negligence in advising someone to just "get really into drinking" or anything along those lines. in the ordinary drug treatment setting, advice like that would be viewed as crazy, but when u take into consideration what things like mmt/bmt actually treat, it isn't so far-fetched.

as far as heroin being part of a polydrug addiction, i am apt to agree that it probably is in the normal case. however, i don't know that many of the addicts seeking help for heroin addiction would recognize it as such at the time, and despite the (sort of) mandatory infrequent counseling sessions involved with BMT, that particular treatment option certainly does not attempt to treat a poly-drug addict; rather, BMT treats specifically (and only) opiate dependence. your typical aa/na group is much more opposed to the use of any and all drugs and alcohol, not just your doc, than the typical bupe maintenance regime. (i know they drug test you and may try to convince you to lower your xanax dose or whatever, but it is specifically aimed at treating opiod addiction and nothing else). if you measure success in such a program as obtaining and remaining free from all opiates, you would be objectively successful in that program as long as that's the case, and i believe that's why most people who enroll in those programs do so: to beat an opiate addiction.

noone's advocating trading one addiction for another, and replace alcohol with weed in my above example if you like, but there is some appeal to the idea that partially substituting different psychoactives for opiates can lead to an opiate-free lifetstyle. consider them helpers or barrier-breakers or whatever, and assume that the amount and frequency of usage recommended is nothing near problematic. if the ultimate goal is just freedom from opiates, then it shouldn't really matter how you get there. if the ultimate goal is freedom from all psychoactive substances and a new higher group consciousness coupled with some spirituality and a shitload of meetings, then it does matter and avoidance of all drugs is recommended. this isn't me really advocating one position over another and i apologize for kind of putting my thoughts down as i have them... i guess my point is that depending on what your personal treatment goal is and the method by which you plan to achieve that goal, it may be okay in some instances to use other drugs sparingly to take your mind off opiates.

^ very well put, and well thought out...

i completely agree, and i was just bringing the other side to the conversation......

thanks for all the replies everyone..

right now im going to use this 8mg sub strip i got to hold me over for hopefully at least the next 2 days until i find a doctor in my area. Im hoping that only 2mg will be enough for a whole day, then i will get 4 days out of this one strip. if not, im sure 4mg will be enough and that gives me 2 days to find a doc.

try 1 mg at first. When i was getting off recreational opiates I had a huge tolerance yet I found that 1mg of suboxone held me quite well.

and not to get your hopes down, but I made an appointment with a doctor who is licensed to prescribe bupe 3 months ago and my appointment is still a month out.
So although I am against acquiring drugs on the street, I would pick up as much bupe as possible. I was able to do a rapid detox from like 15 "personal size" bags per day of dope @ 1mg of bupe taken only when I started feeling horrid (you can stretch it to more than 24 hours) and within 8 days I was off completely with only minor PAWS.

the only problems with getting the bupe on the street for me is the price and availability. theres a bunch of doctors around my area i just need to start calling them.

I just wanted to chime in about suboxone and tramadol. Suboxone was nice at 4mg's a day, however when I was first put on it I needed 16mg's, so small doses dont work for everyone, however I was able to go down from there once I was stable from the withdrawal. I think it's better to start up high, what do you have to loose? It's not going to hurt you. It builds up in your system and makes it easier to taper down imo.

As for tramadol, it's not somthing that you want to plan on saving you, however it's somthing that will make you feel better. I remember getting relief, so it does work. But dont expect the relief you would get from a very strong opiate.

^ very true hydro

i think the misconception is that low doses are the win....

however the case is that we all started higher and tapered down.....this has not been expressed to much...and people should understand that this is the case.......

Hi, I just wanted to give you some first source info about my detox using tramadol with a mixture of cold turkey, it worked well, i went turkey for a few days straight, a week or so almost, then started using 200-400mg tramadol doses into week two. really took care of some of the more annoying of withdrawal syndromes

a lot of people say that tramadol can only take some symptoms away but wont be enough if you have a large habit.

well i disagree. i have a 100+mg insufflated oxymorphone /day and about 60mg IV oxymorphone / day habit and tramadol works wonders for me in the 2-5 days i run out early each month.

it takes away all my major withdrawal symptoms... i do still get a runny nose/watery eyes and some anxiety/insomnia and of course my pain is back but it is nowhere near the awful hell that is oxymorphone withdrawal

i do agree, however, that it is not a good long term solution, although it is useful to keep withdrawals away for a short period of time, and otherwise it is useless. i would say you could taper from your oxy/dope and then use tramadol for a few days and taper off that... or just go to a sub/methadone program.

went to the doctor today and got a prescription for subs.

Only problem is how fucking expensive this shit is. 154 to fill the prescription, on top of the 300 for the appointment. I didn't want to have to tell my parents about my problem but i'm going to have to because i have no other way of paying for this.

The subs are working tho. I've only taken 4mg today so far because i just got the prescription 2 hours ago and im supposed to take 2mg ever 45min-hour until i reach a max of 16mg.

I feel really bad for addicts who don't have friends who are willing to loan them money or parents to pay for their stuff either. Its kind of rediculous when you think about it. Someone wants to get clean, but its so expensive they don't even have the ability to.

trams definately do help with w.d.'s, if i take trams I dont feel the urge to get rocked at all really....the bigger problem is to stop taking everything all together :(
