Just been prescribed Nucynta for fibromyalgia...need some help

So, yesterday I went to my pain physician whom I see for my fibromyalgia and was switched from my recent pain medication that I take "as needed" for the occasions when even my Lyrica doesn't work. I had recently been on Norco 10's but this meeting he said "that there has been an exciting new drug" 8) released just months ago called Nucynta (Tapentadol) which he said is similar to Tramadol with "more of a kick". He wanted to try me on 100mg of it "as needed" x90 tabs. So as of yesterday afternoon I picked up the prescription bottle and first thing I noticed was the CII symbol. Very surprised he'd prescribed a Schedule II narcotic for fibromyalgia pain. I haven't taken it, as my pain hasn't begun to kick my ass enough that the Lyrica hasn't prevented. I'm weary about taking narcotics on any sort of basis because of my past history.

Does anybody have any personal experience with this and what the effects are like, as all my doctor said was similar to Tramadol "with more of a kick" 8) I'm very curious about the drug and like to hear experience. He said it had only been approved and out on the U.S. market for a few months. I'm also open to replies to any general knowledge of it.

8)8)8)8)K'd-OUT-in-AZ, I did a little research on that medication. I see that is pretty new. I never heard of it before now. It holds alot of warnings. Must be close to oxy's. I hope to see other's jump on this post.
 
Yeah, same here. Reading drug info is easy, I know how to use google. (Thanks missunderstood though, nice contribution) I'd like to hear if anyone has personal experience or a friend or friends friend who has ever tried it. Also if anyone heard about it before release and has some info other than the same repetitive drugs.com & rxlist.com type of sites.

Personally I am not a fan of the "new" medications... I wait for the 1 800 "my bad" numbers to come out.. wait til they fix it.. then see what happens. I like what is tried and true. I don't like being a guini pig. I have fibromyalgia also but I have some other back and neck problems I am dealing with right now so that pain medication I am on is also dealing with the fibro issues. I also get B-12 injections monthly.. they really help with the fatigue.. if you wanna talk message me!

Edit: According to Wikipedia it has stronger pain relief than tramadol but less potential for abuse. Interesting to read about. I will ask my step mother in law she has fibro and she recently was put on some new med maybe this was it.

From what I have read, the only reason it's even being compared to oxy is because of the potentiation effects of the norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. I don't have any personal experience sorry, but I am betting this isn't very recreational at all. Certainly nothing like oxy.
 
NUCYNTA® is a mu-opioid agonist and is a Schedule II controlled substance. Such drugs are sought by drug abusers and people with addiction disorders. Diversion of Schedule II products is an act subject to criminal penalty. NUCYNTA® can be abused in a manner similar to other mu-opioid agonists, legal or illicit. This should be considered when prescribing or dispensing NUCYNTA® in situations where the physician or pharmacist is concerned about an increased risk of misuse and abuse. All patients treated with mu-opioid agonists require careful monitoring for signs of abuse and addiction. NUCYNTA® may be abused by crushing, chewing, snorting or injecting the product. These practices pose a significant risk to the abuser that could result in overdose and death.........IT SURE SOUNDS LIKE IT IS CLOSE TO OXYS
 
So it's a new opioid? I'm confused, not much info about this one. Anyone know if it's morphine or thebaine based? Anyone actually gotten high off it? What doses does it come in? If it's CII it must be decent at least. Speak up Nucynta users, we wanna know the scoop!
 
^I am wondering that myself, because the research I did.. they all did studies comparing it to oxys.. so perhaps they are hoping to replace oxy with this?
 
That warning can apply to any mu agonist. It's fairly generic. From what I was able to find by searching the medical database at the university, it's more potent than tramadol, but less than morphine. Looking at the data in mice and rats, you generally need about the same dose as you do with tramadol, and much higher doses than morphine to get the same results. This is administered IV.

From a person who took part in the clinical trials:

"and in relation to tramadol...well i would say the tramadol was more euphoric, but the tapentadol is better for the actual pain"

The fact is, any mu agonist will stop the pain of W/D from say heroin, but that doesn't say anything for the high. Also, I wouldn't assume just because something is on the list of schedule II drugs that it's automatically an amazing trip. Especially a new drug.

As I understand it, the reason they compared it with oxy in trials is because oxy is the "gold standard" of oral analgesics. The same way morphine is the standard for IV pain relief. In animal testing they compared it with morphine.

That said, tapentadol does seem to give close to the same pain relief as oxycodone, but without as many side effects. From what I read, it seems if you are interested in pain relief, this might be a winner. If you are interested in getting high, it might not be so great.
 
^It's a catch 22 in my situation, because roxicodone works great for my pain relief and I dont get high from my scripted dose which is 15mg every 4 hours. But I do enjoy a buzz every now and again if you know what I mean.. the only side effect is opiate constipation but.. miralax saved my effen life. It would be something I would be interested in if I had a good connection, but I don't. Or if it actually offered better pain management which is more important to me than a random buzz.

But I also have bad reactions to tramadol so.. I don't know if that would be an issue with this medication.
 
Impossible to say. You could ask your doctor to give you a trial. It's new, so it's probably insane expensive. But can't be any worse addiction or abuse wise than oxycodone. If your doc has no problems scriping you oxy every 4 hours, I can't imagine he'd be too bothered by a tapentadol scrip.
 
Tramadol is fucked up.. ya don't get "HIGH" but it sure gets you addicted.So I was also thinking it would be like tramadol. what is mu-opiates? Can someone answer that?

I'm no expert, and so I can't really give you an insightful answer. The basics is that mu-opioids are drugs which bind to the mu-opioid resecptors in the brain. These receptors when activated create a sense of euphoria among other things. An opioid that doesn't interact with the mu-opioid receptor isn't going to be very euphoric. (in addition to mu, there is also delta, kappa and Nociceptin).
 
Nucynta has a stronger anti-depressant effect than tramadol.

Remember people, Euphoria is a side effect.

They do not count euphoria as a part of treatment. This is in no way as euphoric as oxys.
