MikeySammy: I think its probably the Roni Size and Die remix of Who Told You, its on the In the Mode album sampler with the original and Out of Game (which I think is one of the best tunes Roni Size has done in a while!!)
Ah I can't think of anything more to say right now except for
Let there be Drum and Bass

Drum and bass?
I thought it was called bum and face
or was it dumb n ass?!?
ORIGINAL JUNGLISTIC ROWDINESS!
hmmm.........

argh - i was hopin some of you could help us out here. do you know of any links to areas i can get track listings of albums that are not on the charts any longer? i really want to find out what a particular track is called and who made it - on a comilation that i >think< is called hardstep drum&bass

MikeySammy: Is that the one mixed by Grooverider?!?!?!?!? If so how, where did you get it?!? Can I get a copy???
Tracklistingwise, I have heard that compilation (or similar) mentioned in the newsgroup alt.music.jungle. I read it pretty regularly so if you want to give me more details I could post a message on there. Or check the archives on www.deja.com, but I have not often had much success with that seeing as they only run back just over a year.
Another alternative might be a DnB fan site that you might stumble on that has a tracklisting of their cds.
Other than that I don't know of any specific sites with tracklistings for out of press cds.
On a side note, my recommendation for today: Klute: Phonecall (Matrix Remix) some great rolling beats and deep atmospheric vibe.

PS: Congrats on the ModEratorship!! Bigup

yeah thanks man..
nah - that cd im talking about is fairly old i think. and i dont have a clue who remixed it, a friend had the cd and i taped it onto a cassette.

Yeah the Hardstep one I am thinking of is kinda old from around 95 or something.
I really want to get some more mixtapes, mix cds etc from around that time. So many classic tunes from then. I love caning my Frost tape from Helter Skelter 96, but need more...more damnit

I've got an old SS mixtape from ages ago. I dont know the names of any of the tracks. One has this backwards vocal, one uses the vocal from "i will always love you"-Whitney Houston(its good though) and the other one i like has this vocal: "when i look at you i feel something tells me that you're the kinda guy that i should make a move on". I know they are really well known tracks its just i dont know the names and i dont know the name of the tape.
Help?

Yeah I suck at old tune IDs, since I have only been full on into it for the past couple of years. I know what I like really well but otherwise its all a blur of breaks and bass.
On a fresher tip, fullfilled some of my wishlist yesterday! Picked up
Ram Raiders 1 and
Matrix and Fierce: Tightrope/Climate
Some real class tunes on the Ram pack such as Firewire, Kung Fu Fresh, Believe and Skull Smashers. The Decorum track is arse though.
Matrix and Fierce: well nuff said already, nothing else quite like what Matrix is doing at the moment with this release and the Phonecall remix.
Seeing as we all suck at Tune IDs what do people think of MCs??? Sometimes I think they work excellently with the DJ, for example:
GQ, Conrad, Flux (his rhymes just crack me up), MCMC, Kray (from Sydney)
Others just don't know when to shutup at times. I get really fed up with most recent mixtapes, because the MC chatter is louder than the tunes. The sets end up becoming MC whatever with some guy in the background dropping a few plates.
What are other people's opinions??

Yeah mc's good idea.
When I saw GQ with Grooverider i really liked him. Some of the stuff was very cheesy: "When I say Groove you say rider"
GQ: "groove.."
Crowd: "rider" etc
I still loved it. But I got a copy of the gig at Hobart and GQ overused the effects on the mic so much, sound was just distorted. I hate it.
Conrad I reckon is good but still a bit over rated. He gets respect for being able to sing.
I absolutely hate MC Rage. He and Goldie pretty much sucked arse.
Sydney wise: kray is the man.
Dont ask why but we were having a conversation about tile prices at Home once. Kray turns around and starts ryhming about tiles. Very funny. MC's Nite and Oracle from 4th 'n' West work really well together, always tight. And Ozi battla, no fake ragga accent, aussie as they come, spits out so many ryhmes so fast i cant keep up. Actually i cant fault any of the Sydney MC's.
What I want to see is a dj who wears one of those head sets Conrad wears, then MC and DJ at the same time. C'mon its evolution. I reckon you should try it raw. I would cept i dont mix.
Respec' all junglists.

I think with the old Ragga sound systems the guys used to chat while playing tunes. I think some hiphop DJs do similar. When I have seen Norman Jay he chats through his sets, biggin up the crowd and everyone.
On a slightly different tip, when I saw Chez Damier (Chicago House DJ) last year he sang while playing tunes.
Personally I don't think it would work with me rhyming over the top of my mixes. Rather concentrate on not clanging and cane through the tunes!!
But you hear someone like Andy C on his Kiss FM shows, chats away over some tunes, timing his banter to the structure of the tunes and while he does it he screws around with the levels too...

I reckon overthetop, completely excessive MC'ing is good, even to the point of drowning out the sound of the rekkids. ESPECIALLY when the dj calls himself RAW and they can't mix 2 rekkids together to save their life and if the MC is an original porn star named rc1n or sean.

teehee
*DISCLAIMER* you KNOW i'm messing with u raw

BIG UP!
But on a more serious tip, excessive MC'ing sucks arse HARD unless you're really really messed up (in a good way) then it can be really really good.

rc1n: I really hope I never see you with mike in your hand!!

ez mate
Some classic drug hazed MCing from early nineties pirate radio can be found on Simon Reynolds' site. (I will post the link later)
He mentions it in his book Energy Flash with a transcript but the sample on the website is just hilarious, some really scattered bizness.

nup, i gotta admit, MCing, well at least what i have seen of it here in melbourne, is really fuckin annoying.
First of all, in order to make their words rhyme, they talk complete crap.
Secondly, they all seem to want to put that fake ragga accent on.
Thirdly, the dj takes no notice of them, and so they try to blend their talking complete crap in with the music, and whilst some can do so, others cant. and you stand there jumpin about, listenin to the beats and drumming and banging and crashing, and you wonder, "what the fuck is that guy talkin about?"
Fourthly, they try to work the crowd up, and because of the fake accent, personally i dont get worked up i just laugh at the fukker.
And fifthly, most of them dont know when to shut the fuck up and let the drums and basslines roll along on their own for a while.
MCing, if you ask me, should be singing. Conrad knew what Bukem was doing. And his vocals just blended in with the atmospheric jungle, with slight feedback to get that floaty effect. correct me if anyone knows im wrong but it sounded like bukem might have been doing effects on his voice? who knows.
but it sounded good.
and if MCing is not singing, it has to be speaking softly and complement the tracks.. doesnt have to fuckin rhyme all the time, ya know? im not saying they should all be like Conrad but they gotta do what Conrad does with Bukem's music - compliment it.

Good post MS!! Bigup!
Worst aspect of having MCs is calling for the rewind!
When Bailey played here this year (I know I keep bringing it up) there was only one rewind and it was on Can't Punish Me. Made it something special.
Compared to SS and Warren G where he called for 3 rewinds on Cut Slo. But there was an excess of rewinds through the night. Probably the only good 20 mins of the set where SS got a chance to mix with no rewinds.
The big raves in the UK sound like a farce now days with 2 or more MCs alongide the DJ. On a DJ Phantasy set I have almost every tune gets pulled back. Its beyond absurd!! Mind you if you were mashed out as most of the kiddies there would be I don't know if you would care...
MCs can work at times and in previous post I mentioned some of the ones I believe are good. But the main thing is the MC stands BEHIND the DJ, not IN FRONT!!! Unfortunately many seem to think they are now the stars.
I agree MS, the fake ragga accents put on by Australian MCs sound stupid. Australian Hiphop MCs don't gain any respect by using American accents.
I would really like to hear more female MCs. That could work out to be really interesting. Only heard some of MC Chickaboo on the DJ WildChild mix cd. But improvised female vocals over a mix could sound pretty sweet! One thing I love in tunes are the little snippets of female vocals.
nuff for now.
