Jobseeker's Allowance Megathread ver. The Jeremy Kyle Fan Club

So I'm now ready to leave the house and go to JCP. I'm having a berroca before I go. So any last minute tips? I want careers and training advice, and benefits advice.

The JC will not give you any of that im afraid, they told me they are not benefit advisors, i doubt theyd have any careers or training advice that would be of benefit to you (after 3-4 months of signing on they will assume you are mentally subnormal and send you on a course about how to apply for jobs.) The JSA 'advisors' are there just to ensure people "comply" with all their rules.

My main strategy is not to answer any questions that sound like they'd put in me in trouble. I'll say "I'm not really sure, I'll need to check" if they ask me how much money I've got or anything like that. Which is kinda true. I don't have all that information to hand.

Any other hot tips though?

I've finished my berocca, you've got one minute <3

If you've read your claim form it does state that you'll need to show how much you have in the bank by way of a statement, usually a mini statement on the day gained via cash point.

The only courses you'll be put on serve no use, ie; how to apply for jobs, how to write a cv.

So here's what happened. I went in, and spoke to a man, and you're right they give out no help regarding training or anything, but he did tell me to go to Skills Development Scotland, which is what it sounds like. And I got an appointment on Monday for benefits advice and claim. So it wasn't an entirely wasted trip.

I then went to SDS, had a quick chat, and I've got an appointment with them on Tuesday for advice on retraining. They also gave me a leaflet and directed me to their website so I can do a bit of research before the meeting.

I also got a fair bit of fresh air and exercise. So, all in all, it was better than sitting in the house going slightly mental, which would have been the alternative :D

i am on the same thing its compulsory after a year but mine is called yorkshire coast enterprises putting me through my cscs card for health and safety its means shit really but gets you on to work sites and they pay for it as well

I went in for my 3 yearly income support top up interview at the job centre on tuesday, where I have to give them any changes of details from the last 3 years.

I havent been claiming half of what I'm entitled to because of the enormous amounts of fuck ups along the way, and I've ceased giving a fuck about cash. Shame my mortgage company havent but whatever.

Listening to my story she actually held my hand at one point (yes a job centre assistant ... makes NO sense ;p) and looked like she was gonna cry. And after a pretty horrendous app with my doc last week or so the whole situation had a lulzworthy ironic twist to it.

Got productive tho, and attended a Carers appointment straight after .... who deal with help to actual carers not the poorly folks being cared for. .... most amazing woman and hopefully I'll be in possession of what I'm entitled to pretty soon. They're linked to CAB too, but no waiting around and awesome attention to your needs. I gave her a hug on the way out bless her.

It is so nice when you meet an adviser who isn't all bitter & twisted and who doesn't look down at you.

Glad you got to speak to somone with a heart. It makes such a difference, the first advisor i had was a total cunt, but my last one was a really genuinely nice & helpfull guy.

I have got my JCP making-a-claim meeting at 10.30 tomorrow. I just realised I'm totally unprepared and liable to get taken for a ride if I actually tell them anything.

Has anyone else had such a meeting and what happened? I know not to expect wonders, I'm just wondering how best I can prepare for it?

Thanks in advance!

edit: it's OK I get it, you've already given me all your advice last time.

I'm not long back from my JCP appointment. People were right, of course, it wasn't very useful. They didn't seem to have a record of my appointment, which was a bit worrying. After a few minutes they either found it or found someone with ten minutes to spare.

It wasn't completely useless, I learned the following:

- If you are unfit for any type of work, you claim ESA.
- If you are fit for some type of work, you claim JSA.
- You can claim JSA even if you're looking to retrain.
- The only way to make a JSA claim is at online at http://www.gov.uk
- Once you've made the JSA claim you get an appointment to go back to JCP.

They really could have told me all this on Friday. But I got some exercise and fresh air (again!).

So now I'll go the website and see what the claiming process looks like. I suppose one good thing is I'm learning the system, the hard way, so I'll be able to help others.

I went to the jobcentre and signed off from JSA and then rang the number to make a new claim for ESA,took 46 minutes to complete over the phone.
Mind you the woman had to ask me for my birthdate about 4 times so she wasn't exactly on the ball but we got there in the end.
Now just gotta wait and see how long it takes them to sort it out, not the best time of year to be claiming a new benefit.

thats one cheers knock :) got my interview review thing coming up and ive just been blagging it for the last few months not really applying for work so think its best if i try at least to find some thing before i get struck off by them

still had the phones in on wednesday when i signed on .

use to see all the junkies in york using them to ring their dealers on was funny them sneaking around trying not to get court

strange because you need to ring up the benefits agencies most of the time when your in there could be the fact yours is a more metro style one that our country one less people traveling in from the sticks costing them time between home and sorting out the benifits

When I signed off JSA and wanted to make my claim for ESA using the jobcentres phone I was not allowed to.
Luckily the number I claimed on was free phone number even on my mobile otherwise the 46minute call would have cost me a fair bit of credit.
I have read on a unemployment forum I use about JCP removing their public access phones.
Seems a shitty thing to do as not every call you need to make is free from mobiles & what about phoning places up about an advertised job.

Everyone i know IRL whenever i hear from them, they allways ask how is the job hunting going. Im getting pissed off with it now, ive got othet things on my plate atm, and im not even signing on. Unfortunately i cannot tell anyone what it is i have on my plate, so i suspect they all think im a lazy skiving ne'er do well or something. I am, to a point, but Id be quite happy to work part time, and if that would keep me afloat, that would be fine.

Ive got some important meetings with my key worker and dual diagnosis worker this month, they are gonna put me in touch with more recover groups, one for tranquilers/ or benzos as they areknown these days, they should change the name FFS, anyway, also my dual diagnosis worker wants to set up a mental health group. Once i know the timings of all these things i can start applying for part time or temp work, im probably gonna be away for a while in australia this year too.
