So if Richard Branson were made redundant tomorrow then he's perfectly entitled to go and slap in a claim for ESA? After all, he 'deserves it', doesn't he? Whereas that jobless single mother down the road is a lazy cow, ain't she?
An absurd example, perhaps, but I don't think you quite grasp what means-tested benefits are there for.
It isn't about 'a handout' for all and sundry, it's about taking measures to prevent abject poverty. People with savings are not living in abject poverty by definition. Nor are savings a universal right, less still a measure of worthiness.
