I actually agree, the law is not the issue. As others have said, taking advantage of (physical or emotional) power is one part of it, and ability to consent is another part.

Do you think it's OK for a 20 year old man or a 13 year old boy to have sex with a 13 year old girl?

I agree the law is not the issue. Or it would be 'ok' the likes of Peel marry 15 year olds, which it's really not. It is the taking advantage that bothers me. I've heard some lads boast about shagging 15 year olds etc, well it's not exactly going to be hard. They've no experiance of guys telling them everything they want to hear yet, so they're going to be exceptionally easy to manipulate for an older guy. It's just a bit sick, even if he is nice to her. Either shows a lack of maturity/bit of a looser on his part, or he is a manipulative bastard.

the point I'm trying to make is that ethically, a girl or boy doesn't magically become old enough to have sexual relationships the minute he/she turns 16. It's not all black and white, there are shades of grey...In addition, an 18 year old having a sexual relationship with a 15 year old is a lot different that a 50 year old having a sexual relationship with the same young person.

I completely agree with both those points you've made AE. Not so much in different society's it's more acceptable. Although it may be in that place, I would still say anyone from the UK who goes to Thailand and fucks a 14 year old is morally corrupt.

I totally agree though 15 years and 364 days and you are a nonce 16 years and 1 day you are not. There is no switch that flicks which means girls gain total sexual maturity on their 16 birthday. You've certainly got to question why older men would repeatedly be sniffing around girls of that age though even if it is that they are annoying as fuck at the very least.

Seems like a moot point in this case anyway as there are allegations now of girls as young as 13 being involved.
 
The reports I've read about Savile claim the sex was not consensual and more than a little coercion was involved.

These were clearly not cases of frisky 15year olds throwing themselves at a celebrity and willing indulging in a sex. The reports from the victims clearly indicate he targeted and manipulated vulnerable young people into very one sided and downright unpleasant sex acts.

I'm not really hung up about the age of consent here, there is at least one count of rape that I am aware of and that is not because the girl was under age but because she did not consent to sex with Savile.

I think we were more discussing John Peel, I don't think anyone's questioning the morality of what Saville is alleged to have done.

This actually does my nut in. Spade done some shady things in Thailand. Shady things that folk do here all the time. "I'll call you tomorrow" then delete the number etc. He has never once said he fucked a "bar girl".

Certain folk on here act as though he came back form Thailand & openly banged on about shagging hookers all day. He didn't say that. I think a few of you don't even realise this & think that he did claim to do these things that you accuse him of.

He may well have, but he never once said he did.

You say there are complex individual considerations. I agree, my point was it is costly (in terms of effort, time) to take those considerations into account, and as a society we have to decide how much we are willing to put into making individual judgements. Right now we have a simple, arbitrary age of consent which does not take into account individual circumstances, but if a case comes to court our judges do in fact put effort into those individual circumstances when sentencing. I'm not saying that's ideal, it would be better if the judgements were made outside of the criminal system, before any contentious act has taken place. But it's very costly! Perhaps there are better ways to spend our time than making sure everyone who wants to get jiggy can get jiggy at the earliest opportunity. On the other hand, perhaps there are not.

I know a guy who went to thailand on holiday, decided to stay there and married a whore, his wife and kid he left back in the uk were well pissed off, she was left paying the mortgage on their house aswell.
