Japan earthquake, tsunami pictures

i haven't seen it on the news. its not in secret its from friends who are there on facebook. i've taken a quick look for corroborating news stories to work out why they're doing this if there's not a large risk of radiation exposure, and not found anything. were i to find a news story explaining it, i would be quite pleased, as i do want to know how they maintain coherency by doing both that and saying that the risk is small... so if you have a link to that story please share!

I think giving people iodine tablets is a psychological gambet, as you say chinup, to produce a placebo like effect where people feel something is being done.

Similar to when they were dropping helicopter loads of water on the reactors in the first day or so before they got the power reconnected, even though the wind was blowing most of it away and it wasn't doing much good - they wanted to be seen to be doing something.

Although if the situation did become much worse, the fact they already had iodine tablets being handed out would surely be an advantage?

So what is the technical meaning of a 'meltdown'?

Yes, it would. In fact for all I know, they're being advised to keep them 'just in case' so that if the worst comes to the worst there's not a huge rush to get them out, as by this point you'd be putting people at risk by allowing them to go outside.

So what is the technical meaning of a 'meltdown'?

that was mostly me being a pedantic arsehole, the technical definition I know has nothing to do with nuclear power but is related to a problem in the scalability of quantum computers, see http://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/0502050 so its really not relevant to the current discussion. sorry!

I don't know where I read or saw it mate but it's definitely been in the news. Last week sometime.

The internet is full of alarming news stories similar to the stuff you came out with devoid of much in the way of real information.

At the moment the the primary health threat is iodine-131 which has a half life of eight days so should disapear within a few months - quite different to chernobyl but not something you read much about in most of the more alarming news stories.

I am not a nuclear physicist, but i spent a good while about 6 months ago researching chernobyl (reading articles, watching a variety of documentaries) and i've been reading all the different news reports on the subject as they come out now.

For a decent article on the current situation have a look at The Register;

Fukushima: Situation improving all the time

Okay all is well and fine, on-ones gonna get cancer or have birth defects. So you take your info from the less 'alarming' stories? Take it you've not heard about the MOX mixed uranium/plutonium used in Reactor 3? Plutonium does more than give a few thyroid prolems or whatever you're predicting and is a hell of a lot worse than even Uranium. I hope it's as harmless as you make out but i doubt it.

If the plutonium was getting out this would be, as you suggest, a very serious incident.

This is not happening at the moment and as they get the reactors more under control the odds of it happening in the future reduce more. Unless some kind of further calamity takes place i don't think we need worry about uranium and plutonium leaking everywhere.

They have proper containment at the japanese reactors, completely different to the old soviet reactors like chernobyl which lacked a hard containment vessel which allowed the burning interior of the reactor to vent directly into the atmosphere.

Is that the religious American bitch who said God caused all this to punish the Japs for being mostly athiests?

what.the.fuck.?

She is either the ultimate troll queen or the most insane woman in the world. How in the fuck can anyone believe that nonsense she was spouting? I'm...just....stunned....

Spadey: That's the one. Japan deserved it cos there are too many atheists in the world and god listened to the prayers of the faithful and blitzed it for them. Nice of him that. Dunno if she's taking the piss and backfiring totally or if she genuinely believes it. With Christian loonies you never can tell cos they really are that nuts that there undoubtedly are those that would agree with her even if she was trolling in terrible taste.

Had a quick scan through her other vids on PooToob and I don't think she's trolling. Or if she is it's a one-joke troll and horribly distasteful pretty much every time. I think she just freaked when she saw the reaction she got - her previous lil rants in similar vein got grief but not on the scale the Japan one did. God Hates Haiti, for example. Same shtick, way less outrage. Probably cos you can get away with saying stuff like that about Haiti. She either means it or she really needs some new material.

^^Just been doing the same. She was hardly sincere in her regret was she? Regretful over the reaction maybe - as you say.

Indeed. She just looked pissed off and slightly embarrassed in that "apology" vid. Which contained no actual apology anyway - bit like when you're a kid and a parent makes you go and shake hands and apologise for twatting your lil brother with summat.

I think she really is that nuts. And as MrM mentions, if not she's indistinguishable from the religious nutters who really do think that way.

It came across as less of an apology and more of an admission of trolling. Admitting to being a troll is not really the same as apologising.
I can't tell if she's a troll or not really but if she is, even as a hard core atheist who enjoys a bit of religious nutter baiting myself, i think she went too far. If she produces the same response as someone who did it for real it's more or less as bad.

This is scary, i feel that we never hear the full truth through the news, but surly this is bad enough, could it be any worse?

I can't stop thinking about all the people who have lost family & friends, & they can't even go home to their own homes to morn in peace, some many people have nothing left..... nothing.......

& it must be freezing in Japan, there is snow & everything, that makes it all so much harder, their lives have been turned upside down & then pulled inside out, nature can be so so cruel.......

Japan nuclear crisis: Radiation spike report 'mistaken

The operators of a stricken Japanese nuclear plant have apologised for a "mistake" in reporting a radiation spike 10 million times above normal.

Tokyo Electric Power Company, which has previously been criticised by officials for its handling of the crisis at the plant, said it got the readings wrong.

How can the people in charge, so called experts, manage to make a wrong reading of such a massive error?
