Japan earthquake, tsunami pictures

I doubt they wanna let the news out of there. I wouldn't be surprised if they were keeping a lot of information to themselves.

I've heard some idiot americans going on about how they feel "unwell" these last two weeks. STFU.

Probably mentioned already, but I'm sure it was reported when it first happened, that the people running the plant had previously been reprimanded for either falsifying reports or not reporting failures in the past.

edit: Found this here.

If they are as devious as that, it comes as no surprise news of higher radiation. Dicks.

Fukushima scaremongers becoming increasingly desperate

Reporters clamoured to know more - in particular how could the water in the basement of the reactor building have become so radioactive - no less than "10,000 times normal". One might note that in general radiation levels 10,000 times normal mean that you could achieve a tiny fraction of an extra percentage point of cancer risk by being exposed for a fortnight or so.

Just had another Earthquake, 6.5 this time. A mini tsunami possibly on the way. The fuck is going on?

Shit hope it doesn't cause too much more damage and there's no more tsunamis.

Assuming you are right, what is going on is another earthquake and tsunami.

This is not surprising. Earthquakes produce tsunamis when the conditions are right (water depth and location relative to the coast) and earthquakes often come in groups. This happens because earthquakes are the result of the massive slowly moving tectonic plates that make up the earths crust which sit on top of the semi molten/plastic mantle where convection currents powered by the heat of the core circulate, moving past each other, which they do less than smoothly. Instead of moving at 4 cm a year (say) they will stick for decades then unstick in a series of sudden movements (aka earthquakes).

Because they can happen semi-periodically maybe once every 30, 50, 100 or whatever years, depending where you are on the planet, whole generations can grown up in places never having experienced a bad earthquake except in stories, built themselves some poorly manufactored sky scrapers, then when a bunch of bad earthquakes comes along and nocks it all down they'll blaim god or yell 'what the fuck is going on'.

San Francisco is about due for another one.

Japan is situated by the Pacific Ring of Fire. With a name like that - again is it surprising? Tsunami is even a japanese word!

I presume those who are interested saw the Horizon special last night, or the one last week on C4? It said it all there really. Earthquakes often come in groups because as MrM says, they are a sudden release of long built up forces. And once one goes in a big way, it releases the pressure on that region, but passes it on to another like tearing a piece of paper. Then of course there are the doomsday people who now predict a mass outbreak of quakes around the pacific rim. To a degree I suppose that could well happen due to the immense forces released in this massive magnitude 9 quake. But the biggest fear is the big one underneath Tokyo. According to the program last night, the likelihood has increased as the pressure has shifted. But in the end, who knows. All the scientists can do despite endless research and effort, is to predict the areas at risk. Not how big or when or which of those areas it will be.

What a load of sensational crap. There are still sheep grazing on contaminated fields in Cumbria from chernobyl that are not allowed into the food chain as a result. But, apparently, if you were to eat a lamb chop from one of these sheep every day for a year, you would receive the same radiation dose as you would from a chest X-Ray. Or something along those lines.

That stat was one of many highly relevant stats from a very interesting Horizon program a few years ago. You need to watch it if you've not already : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1HF_TnCkhg

The cynic in me did wonder at the timing of that program though. It was around the same time as the government announced it's intention to reopen the nuclear power debate. Informative, or propaganda? You decide.
