Japan earthquake, tsunami pictures

perfect haze - indeed, i'll keep an eye out for future updates of the article. i dunno what to think really, my friends who are out there are joking about it being less radiation than a banana (they're in tokyo though). in fact i got that article from one of them.

its difficult cos they're (nb NOT nuclear) physicists so they have done the necessary calculations to assess they're own safety but i don't know how many assumptions they've put in, i don't think they can do objective science about something like this so perhaps they're also understating them to make the entire thing less psychologically distressing.

the article you posted definitely has a point- emergency backup relying on outside power is a bit silly, and glad he agrees that a chernobyl scale disaster is unlikely.

Most of Japan's debt is internal, with bonds that it would issue to its citizens with a very low interest rate, much less than what the bond markets would offer (banks, investors). So what you had is the government lending money from it's citizens over the past decades with a next to zero interest rate. That happens nowhere else in the world, at least to my knowledge to the extent that the Japanese have. I would imagine that some type of emergency bond will be issued internally, with a very very low interest rate, and that will be used to rebuild the areas affected.

If the same were to happen in another developed western world, I doubt people would lend their savings to the government for a return of 1%... If a tsunami hit a European coast, you would see a mass exodus of savings like no other.

This is going to drag on for generations I fear, now even the msm admit there is radiation leaking. There is a meltdown happening if it hasn't happened already. There is a history of covering the true extent of the problem.
I fear the worst for Japan, they have mixed uranium and plutonium reactors there. I just hope and pray it will somehow be contained but I think it's too late given the fact the whole country is at a stand-still and resources are scarce. It's worst than a nuclear bomb in the long run, a lot more radioactive matter could poison the air and ground. Deformities and cancers may become the norm for the great nation of Japan.
 
There are going to be lots of people falling on swords me thinks. Whoever thought that building newklear power stations next to the 'ring of fire' was a good idea needs lobotomising.
 
The Japanese like all ( except Iceland) industrialised nations seem to have scant regard for the natural enviroment preferring to perform the equivalent of shitting upon the heads of the newborn - a novel idea - perhaps some postmodern religion may embrace it as a ritual

'the embassy,' which i can only assume to be the british embassy, is now handing out free iodine (or potassium iodate to be precise) to people in tokyo, a rather long way from the plants.... i can't see anything on the news about increased radiation fears but surely they're handing that our for a reason?

B9- i wouldn't really call Iceland's determination to continue whaling respect for nature. and actually until westernisation and the japanese diet, due to containing far less industrially farmed animal products, was one of the least ecologically damaging diets out there. ok they eat more fish than the earth can really afford, but this is a result of population explosion. so unless you're vegan the average japanese ecologically footprint is probably smaller than yours, ironically the widespread use of nuclear power contributes to this too.
 
A website I visit a lot is the Boston Globe where they have incredible photographs for all different reasons, but the Japan disaster has obviously taken centre stage over the last couple of weeks.

You fear this because you clearly don't understand nuclear power.

i. The japanese admitted to the radiation leak when it occured - they had to vent radioactive gases to reduce pressure build up and prevent a more serious incident.

ii. 'meltdown' isn't a technical term and doesn't really mean much except that something inside the reactor has melted. The results of a 'meltdown' in a reactor that is turned off (like the japanese ones) is very different to that of a nuclear reactor that is running at the time (like chernobyl). As long as the main containment vessels contains the nuclear fuel and only hydrogen gas is vented it doesn't really matter that much in the grand scheme of things if some of the rods melt a little bit, other than damaging the reactor and preventing it being easily started up again.

iii. You'd have to be an idiot to think any of this was worse than a nuclear bomb. Japan has already suffered from 2 of those and they killed a lot more people and caused a lot more devastation than the current situation with nuclear reactors ever will. There will be much less radiation released and unless you count the actual death and destruction from the earthquake and tsunami as well, there will be much less damage to life and property.

iv. There won't be much in the way of cancer and you wont be getting mutant freaks with deformaties from something like this. Most likely result - a slight but measurable increase in things like thyroid cancer in a few decades time and maybe a few of the workers closest to the scene suffer from some radiation poisoning.

I wonder where you get your facts from?

You don't know how much radiation is being leaked or what the true extent of the damage is. I was speculating. There are still deformities from the Chernobyl disaster so I don't know why you are so sure of yourself. They should prepare as best they can and it looks like they are.

The internet is full of alarming news stories similar to the stuff you came out with devoid of much in the way of real information.

At the moment the the primary health threat is iodine-131 which has a half life of eight days so should disapear within a few months - quite different to chernobyl but not something you read much about in most of the more alarming news stories.

I am not a nuclear physicist, but i spent a good while about 6 months ago researching chernobyl (reading articles, watching a variety of documentaries) and i've been reading all the different news reports on the subject as they come out now.

MrM I am very much inclined to agree with you. I work in a physics department and the constant conversation is incredibly derogatory about people taking this threat too seriously and demonising one of the cleanest electricity sources we have. however I'm very concerned about the fact that people are being given precautionary medication to prevent radiation sickness in tokyo, i can't give a public source for that information unfortunately. what is the rationale behind this? is potassum iodate just incredibly cheap, non harmful and therefore a good placebo to make people feel a little better about the disaster?

p.s. meltdown does have a technical meaning, it just gets ignored in the standard press!
