IV Sedation for wisdom teeth extraction

Was wondering what I may expect from this.. has anyone gotten this procedure done before? I heard a common drug for the IV sedation is midazolam- is this a benzo with a high probability to make you forget the entire treatment itself?

I am very nervous as I have never been put out before, and am wondering if it is nothing to be afraid of. I have experienced with ' mainstream ' benzos before, alprazolam, diazepam, clonazepam, etc.

I do not understand how using such a drug could help the pain and agony in such a pocedure!
 
yeah, with IV midazolam you're just straight out and you don't remember anything (if done right). They'll probably have you count back from 10. If you're lucky, you'll get to 8.
Then you wake up and its done. Its often given with some sort of opioid; I received fentanyl.
Anyway, the midazolam totally takes care of all the anxiety and you won't remember a thing, its very hyponotic, more so than any of the more common ones you listed.. I hope you don't have a benzo tolerance - if so you might not get 'enough' midazolam.

Usually when midazolam is used for procedures (especially painful ones) they combine it drugs like fentanyl.

If they use that combo you will be sedated but conscious so they aren't actually putting you out, you will just not remember a second of it. They will manage the pain during the procedure and usually give you a script for T3's, vicodin or percocet so unless you have a large opioid tolerance, you shouldn't have to worry too much about the pain.

Lastly, if they don't prescribe an anti-inflammatory with it I would pick up some ibuprofen or naproxen and take that afterwards. A lot of the pain will be due to inflammation so some people on here actually prefer the NSAIDs to just painkillers for relive.

Midazolam = benzo. Used to sedate patients for procedures that cause anxiety. The local aneasthetic will be the same as usual (probably lidocaine). If the local shot is done properly, with the dentist making sure that the aneasthetic has taken hold before beginning his work, no sedation is needed. I had my wisdom teeth, residual roots in other teeth, extracted without sedation (or pain). I had a metal implant (with drilling into the jaw) placed without any sedation. Sedation is often used for children, for the handicaped, or for wimps. Just joking, if you feel better with one, ask for one.

The real pain in teeth extraction comes later, when the local aneasthetic wears off. Then you need something a bit stronger than paracetamol.

However for things like gastroscopies or coloscopies sedation is a must.
 
It appears you're in Europe. In the US, just about everyone gets anesthesia without asking. Its something the doctors give everyone, our rights as Americans I guess. :| I'm pretty sure you'd have to ask not to get it. When I got mine taken out, I got fentanyl/midazolam, as did everyone else I know who has gotten their wisdom teeth taken out (well, one guy I know received fentanyl/diazepam, but thats close enough).
 
You'll be "out" within 5 seconds. I felt a cold feeling in my hand, from IV. My next memory was being in a different room like wtf just happened.

In Europe the most you get for dental extractions is a paracetamol/codein combo for the night and a coffein/paracetamol combo for the day. In hospital for minor surgery all you get is sodium dipirone ("novalgine"). When you sprain an ankle all you get is diclofenac. It varies slightly from country to country though, in France you may get tramadol or propoxyphene in some cases. Opiates are for serious cases or for the elderly. It seems to be allright for elderly people to become addicted to opiates.

This was my experience, I was conscious but forgot immediately.I was given a script for 20 vicodins but truthfully ibuprofen was good enough for the pain.

Don't mention any opiate tolerance or other drug use besides prescribed meds.
 
Can't beat the midazolam/fentenyl combo. Still hangs around a couple hours after the prodedure. Nice buzz!;)

On the other hand, I had propofol (sp?) when I had my colonoscopy. Absolutely, no after effect other than I felt like I had a complete 8 hours of sleep in twenty minutes of being out.
 
well i had my wisdom teeth removed about a year and a half ago. should i call the place where i got them taken out and ask what they typically give? i wanna know if i have tried a different benzo that i have never tried before, that would be kool.
Also when i had this procedure the doc put me under and i remember bein conscious throughout the procedure. when it hurt i would flinch and i remember hoppin that he could see me flinch cuz it hurts and i couldnt tell him that i wasnt fully out. it was so hard to describe the consciousness i was in bc i damn sure wasnt completly knocked out but when i say i flinched and stuff it wasnt much but turned out to be enough to get the doc to notice cuz when i looked at my paper work days after. it says i got 30 mins of anesthesia and then 3 times it says +15mins of anesthesia so i assume the +15 are him upping the anesthesia b/c of my flinching and shit but i wonder if a benzo was used? could this have somethin to do with not getting knocked out? at the time of surgery i was only about 6 months clean from a xanax addiction 3-4mg/day

anyways it was one of those wierd experiences
on the news around here there was this one dentist/oral sergeon who was puttin ladies out and then feeling them up and doin innapropriate things to these women and they described being aware of him touching there breasts an all but couldnt do much cuz they were sorta out. this was how i felt, i was just barely outa it but just enough there to relize i was in pain and just enough there to relize if this guy woulda tried to start feelin up my breasts. hahaha, by the way i am laughing at the joke not at the women who were taken advantage of

You most likely wont receieve any sort of sedation or pain med, just a couple of shots of local anasthetic and then a script of vicodin afterwards. I thought the shots into my gums were the most painful part of the whole thing
 
When I had my wisdom teeth done they first gave me a nitrous mask

I think they might have put me under general anasthesia, I remember them telling me that was the plan

But I dunno if that's normal. I had a nerve wrapped around a tooth and they were impacted or whatever. I was in pain for about a week afterwards
 
I got a midazolam/fentanyl IV mix when I was put under for getting my wisdom teeth out and jaw surgery.

As soon as they start to administer the IV meds they'll tell you to count back from 10 and next thing you know you're waking up wondering wtf just happened. I actually woke up sobbing for some reason lol, but the nurses were very good about quickly getting me some IV diazepam to calm me down.

There's really nothing to worry about, its a common procedure.
 
this is really interesting. i never really gave thought to what knocked my ass out, raped my memory, and made me wobbly afterwords. i should have guessed a benzo. cool stuff.

i've heard of this, where people are concious, they feel everything of it, but they cannot move. they're completely paralyzed. i'm really sorry to hear that you had to indure this. its really rare for that to happen.

there's a technical term for this but i cannot bring it to mind right now.
 
To the person who said IV midozolam would put you right out... Not exactly true... When I got mine out, they gave me IV Midozolam, then IV Fentanyl... And I didn't go under... So they gave me more Fentanyl... Still didn't... So they gave me MORE Fentanyl and I still wasn't even under so they ALSO had to give me Ketamine on top of everything else... So... Yeah... That's a little messed up, because I never gave them consent to give me such an absurd drug coctail. Then afterward they wouldn't even give me anything stronger than 5/500mg Vicodins... What a quack..
