Is it for the Drugs or the Music?

I find that if the music and the people and the vibe is right i feel totally euphoric and sit there dancing my arse off going 'How fucking good is this?' I actually feel better NOT to be on anything and enjoy the music waaay more.

I find that drugs most of the time get in the way of the music except in uber small doses. Otherwise i'm monged out or too busy being fucked to really pay attention to the music!

psy_taco: I've mostly been going to the trance and hardcore raves in Sydney. You know, rave raves. The warehouse kind. It's mainly the ones with all local DJ's that I'm criticising here and while I respect them for doing something I can't do, I can think of quite a few ways they can do it better. (i.e. more gabber, stop repeating songs etc.)

However, I've been to one doof in a park and the music there was amazing - I didn't even need drugs to enjoy it! That and I had to go home early to take care of my grandma, so I'd still have been fucked by the time I got home. Besides, I love psytrance and I'd go to more doofs if my car would go that far. :(

You know, this is sorta off topic but on. But, see, I don't really E up or go clubbing anymore, but when I hear some nice hard trance or what not, I feel like I am peaking. I think it's some assosciation with E and the music which puts me in this awesome energetic mood. I also produce my own music and love doin it coz my drug experience helps me out with making tracks I know will get a bunch of ravers goin skitz. So does anyone else just feel pretty peaked out just from the music?

I get the same thing, like if I go into a club thats cranking some breaks or something I get eye rolls and jaw chatters, maybe I've just eaten so many pills now that I've got some kind of base mdma level that's gets triggered by music I enjoy....

i love the music, but i love MDMA as well. the music, i just love getting soooo lost in the music and dancing the night away. and yeah i also dance w/o the drugs. my mates always laugh cuz the moment we all drop and we get in i start dancing even before it hits me just groovin to the tunes. and then all of a sudden out of nowhere, i feel the first wave start to hit me and everything gets lighter and im like YEAHHHHH. and dancing the whole night away, maybe quite abit is like praising the DJ if hes awesome

I can enjoy the music by itself, infact to me it's a substance in itself. the drugs are a bonus but by all means not crucial to enjoy yourself or the music imo.

I've been looking for that shit in the drug/music bible... Can't find it, but some one should edit it and start it off with that.

Amen AND hallalujah!!

GREAT Thread, :)

Firstly in my opinion, i only go to raves if i like the DJs who are playing there. Not really for a good excuse to have MDMA. However MDMA has been a fairly new drug to me, and its probably helped me tremendously in terms of stepping out of the circle and breaking the many social barriers that I had faced going to public places.

Nevertheless, I listen to dance music at least 12 hours a day because im always on the road as sales rep. Dance music is a huge part of my life when going to your average teeny club they play very commercial music and only a handful of people are on MDMA. There’s nothing worse in my opinion, having to be one of a handful of dancers in the club listening to commercial music under the influence of MDMA while everyone one is watching you.

Commercial music doesn’t have the same euphoria than does a DJ at a rave. That’s why I believe raves 50% music and 50% drugs. The drugs because 80% if not more are on MDMA and thus the paranoia and the sense of belief that everyone is experiencing the same euphoria as you. And the music because only a good Dj would play there own music and really work the decks to create an atmosphere which can only be controlled by the music and the drugs. On the contrary going to your average teeny dance club I am able to have a great time with no drugs.

Anyways

^Good point about the teeny commercial dance clubs. I never thought of them but that's because I don't like most top 40 dance music. I'm sure I would have fun at one of those clubs but there's no way I would enjoy the music unless I was heavily heavily intoxicated.

I don't mind everyone watching me when I'm dancing because I dance differently to everyone else anyway. Hell, if I was on ecstasy, I'd love the attention even more!

Unless the guys are watching only because they're about to throw a jealous drunken fit at me. 8(

I see dance parties in general as rituals.. They may not have an ancient timeless feel to them, but they are rituals all the same.. organisers of outdoor doofs and festivals try their best to make this possible. Thousands of years ago tribes people led by shamans sat around a fire while tripping on psychedelics and playing the drums.. the people would dance to this same beat all night long.. all the bad vibes and thoughts would be beaten out of their system and come sun - rise the ritual would be over and the tribe would celebrate.. For me its the drugs and the music.. they come together as one ritual. One cannot work without the other.. If you do goto events JUST to get fucked up and thats all it means for you..stick to pubs or happy hardcore rave clubbies :)

i think alot of people go to events cause of the whole ltes get shitfaced there kind of thing. but personally me and my mates go to events to support the culture and the music producers and furthermore its got an awesome ambience to it.... i see kids who just sit while theyre waitin to start to get hit. hell, that aint the way.i usually dance til the first wave starts to hit meand then i just go more nutty on the dance floor. the dance and music thing go soo good together cuz you are just expressing yourself through the music and making your body just flow

Thats so true, now because I know the feelings associated when on an MDMA high, I can pull the same feelings out when totally straight, if I'm hearing a favourite song or something that brings back memories. For weeks after a big rave, I'll hear a small section of a song and be like "Wooooooah, the memories of that room, that DJ at 6am!" or whatever.

I loved the music way before I got into drugs but now I suppose they do go together in a way.

I'd say I can fully appreciate the depth and beauty of a song particualrly trance, hardtrance after taking drugs, but I loved the stuff way before. I listen to it generally most of the time but I find that in the car I might listen to trance, whereas at a rave I will most definitely be in the hardstyle/hardtrance rooms as other stuff is just too slow and not commanding enough.

Drugs have given me more appreciation for music, but overall, the music is what you're there for. I've been to raves straight as and found I've still had an absolutely rocking time - just a different one from my friends on drugs. No "altered perception" as has been said, more just you're there to have a dance and have fun. And feel fatigued!

I love raving both on and off drugs. They both have their advantages, and raving straight CAN feel better and be more fun than when you're on a pill.

Usually I find than when I have good ecstasy i miss at least an hour or so of the music cos i always feel more like talking than paying attention to a set. Its only in the plateau and comedown of a pill that i can really appreciate the music.

Mind you, sometimes the music is good enough to make me feel as though i am peaking, with body rushes and all!

I actually went to my first club straight, and continued to goto events totally straight for 2 years until I consumed drugs. But by then, I was more prepared for what I was in for. In the beginning, I went for just the music, now, it's a merge between the two. I think that this way, although unintentionally, has made the 'scene' become more interesting and last longer in terms of getting tired of it.

Just recently I rediscovered the 4am crash. Some nights I can last from dusk till dawn completely straight, other times I get to the club at 10pm and run out of steam at 4am. It's weird. I'll stay till the end, but damned if I do anything strenuous. It's times like that where I need to be enhanced.

My girlfriend used to always be like that. she'd consistently bomb at 4am, often going to sleep at a rave etc.

The she tried pills, and interstingly enough, now whe can go all night on occasion, even when not partaking! It's like the all-nighters she managed on pills taught her how to do all-nighters without them :)

I go to the raves for the music, the dancing, the people and yes the drugs. Arent raves the reason for the drugs?-not drugs the reason for the raves? Why would people go to a rave, spend 50 or so $$ on a ticket just to get fucked if they didnt like the music? sure nearly everyone else there is feeling the same feelings as them, but would they really go just for the drugs? wouldnt they just go to a house or a club? i wouldnt know...i love the music and the drugs the same

Yeh. I do it 'more' for the music, but still for the drugs to a degree. For the first 3 months of me going out every weekend, fri+sat i didn't even know what a pill or a point of wizz looked like. I still often go out without taking anything, just a few reb bulls to keep me awake. It will most definatly always be more for the music than the drugs for me. I listen to msuic 5 hours minimum a day. Music is my life, and will always be.

The worst thing about the rave scene is that drugs do come with it. I couldn't picture it without drugs, but it would be good.

definately the tunes for me. sometimes go out sober too. or just a small bit of speed to stay awake/give me energy to dance. im not really that big on drugs, not worth the comedown imo. i just looove the tunes (hard house/ uk hard dance) :)

I love the music. I've got a huge collection of dance/electronic music, which i listen to all the time. I find that i get a lot more out of the music when i'm on drugs tho.
I'm sure everyone has those memories of seeing your favourite DJ, peaking hard and being totally swallowed up by the music.... It's those special moments that i really go gooey over. I remember seeing 4 strings once and totally peaking when he played 'Take Me Away' - Gold.
