Interesting Quetion here Regarding GABA (Neurotransmisster)

I drink, but rarely.. actualyl when I do drink though I drink quite heavily, and I also can have memory loss at high doses of Alcohol and I'm only 19, but my dad was an alcoholic... But I usually only drink every 2nd week, or sometimes I'll go weeks without touching a drink of alcohol.

Probably just the GHB use then...another thought would be that the alcoholism's (that runs in your family) genes are being expressed/activated, which would explain (partly) why you might (naturally) just have a genetic component that is resulting in an imbalance (not enough) of GABA in your CNS...combined w/ the GHB usage- you just might need to take a little more (benzo) than most people, due to the above factors...
...just don't do it often. Put as much time in between your doses as possible (a few days, at least), and try not to start dosing multiple time a day (this is very important). The key w/ benzos is this: what benzo you're using (half-life related), what is the dosage, what is the time in between your doses, and for how long you continue that pattern...so, as you can see, time is a very key issue when it comes to benzo use and developing dependency issues...:\

Hope this is helping...
Feel free to PM me if you feel like it.

i'm quite a heavy drinker(not every day,but 2-5times a week i'm REALLY REALLY DRUNK!!!)
and i begin gatting WD from alcohol:like shivering(sp?),muscle spasms,headache,and other hangover-like symptoms.
but i first thought it was just a hangover, but i noticed it lasted all day+ sometimes the day after,so i did a search and i foud out it where minor WD symptoms!:(
now i asked myself a few questions: since bezoos and alc a almost the same in effect at the GABA receptors, in what do the differ in mechanism of WD??
also when i would take Vitamine B1 i supostlly(sp??) would stop the minor WDs!, how come?? is vit B1 related in its structure to GABA??(u can use chemical formulas and terms cause i study chemixtry :D

or if anyone has a link to the explanation(sp?:p) of the alcohol/benzo use/WD i would REALLY apreciate(sp:D) it

thanx....

You don't have low GABA levels. Production of GABA isn't limited by precursors. I personally doubt that oral GABA supplementation below 5gs has any effect. But whether that is through GABA or GHB or something else is anyones geuss.

So far, no one's give an exact answer. The man posted asking only one question; 'methods or sufficient ways of increasing GABA in your brain naturally'. That was it, there's so much rambling in this thread. Keep discution focused on the present topic.

I have a question too. How does one benefit both physically and mentally from a supplement increasing GABA? And who would benefit more from taking suplements which increase the level of GABA in the brain; a person who doesn't have altered GABA levels due to benzo/GHB/alcohol use, or a person who has been using benzos or alcohol or GHB for a long time? What result
would taking GABA have on the person who's used benzos for a long time, or alcohol or GHB?

i believe straight GABA would be the most effective form to take.

a person who has not been using aforementioned drugs would most likely not be so much as less anxious but would quicker recovery from anxiety.

Not to mention that GABA supposedly increases dream productivity and supposedly helps you remember them. it is also supposed to help build muscle. IMO, i belive this is utter bullshit to market the stuff but it MIGHT work.

A person who had been using the aforementioned drugs would of course benefit much more. As far as i know (believe), benzodiazepines are the only drug that really would have a noticeable strength difference (in theory) if you had more GABA in your system.

my lack of knowledge on GHB leads me to believe that it might be effected by GABA but im not sure...

Alcohol would effect it but i dont think enough to change the ammount required. might just make things more clean and leave less of a hangover if you get one.

The result taking mass loads of GABA supplement (i.e. 3-6g a day) would have on a person using benzo's is not known as far as i know. if you have ever taken straight GABA you can guess why... (it is very unpleasant to take it and almost causes anxiety problems of its own).

If i had to make a guess i would say it could help with the ammount needed to take for a person with a low tolerance or if some one was trying to tapper off from addiction.

all of that is pretty much speculation but i think its correct.

So lets find out if low GABA levels have to do with anxiety. For those of you who suffer from anxiety do you not remember your dreams at night?

This is just rubbish. There is no evidence that eating GABA increases GABA release in the brain.

Maybe in regareds to the fact that if you weren't releasing GABA you couldn't dream, but you couldn't do anything else either, as you would be dead.

Barbiturates and vigabatrin. As well as drugs like zolpidem/zaphelon etc...

This is the only thing that oral GABA has been shown to do, at least indirectly, through hGH release, (probably GHB mediated).

But this is just not how it happens. Cocaine potentiates dopamine action, but you don't get any bonus if you eat dopamine... not serotonin with MDMA or noradrenaline with methamphetamine, and if you eat less glutamate, ketamine doesn't have more of an effect.

Thanks a lot, been reading through some of these posts, some of these are really good posts, some of them are getting a little off topic here. Anyway, I HATE eating straight GABA as 1 of the posters just mentioned above, it causes more anxiety, gives me shortness of breath and a tingling feeling all over my face for a good half hour or so, so I'm saying to hell with that. Now my problem is, lately I've been having severe anxiety ever since I quit taking Paxil 20mg/day for about 4-5months. It's like a constant generalized anxiety that lasts 24/7 (tightness in the chest, butterflies in the stomache, loss of appetite, OCD, increased heart rate, out of breath a lot faster). None of these symptoms occured while I was on Paxil, and before paxil, some of them did, but not near as bad as they do after taking Paxil and then coming off of it. The other thing is, my GHB usage in the past 2 months has NOT been that high at all, I even took about a good 3-4 week break in between, and I just don't understand why benzo's HARDLY affect my anxiety at all, they hardly take it down a notch, not even Xanax at high doses.

- I just went back to my doctor on Thursday, I asked him if I could try Cipralex (Escitalopram) as an antidepressant instead of that paxil shit, because paxil turned me into a maniac. He told me Cipralex was a much cleaner drug, but didn't acto n as many serotongenic receptors in the brain. Today was day 3 on Cipralex at only 5mg dose (starting out low) and I don't feel any different yet, other than maybe an increase in anxiety. Now before I started this, I couldn't even sleep without taking 1 or 2 Zopiclones, or some GHB before bed, and when I quit Paxil I was taking moderate doses of GHB, maybe 2-3 times a day if that, only for about a week.

- Now I've hardly ever used benzo's in the past, matter a fact the very first benzo I took in my life was at the end of January of this year, and that was a 10mg valium. Then I got prescribed to 0.5mg Sublingual Ativans after I went through some liquid GHB/GBL withdrawal from daily usage for a few weeks, and I'd have to take like 2.5mg-3mg Ativan to even get any relief of Ativan. I hardly used the Ativan after that though, and would take 2-3 week breaks in between uses and they were only 0.5mg . Then I got about 50 2mg Clonazepams which I shared with my brother, and dad, and I NEVER used them on a daily basis, I would mainly just use them and combine them with Alcohol like take 2-4mg Clonazepam a day with a 6 pack or whatever, but that would be with 1-2 week breaks in between, even more. Now just recently, I had been using Zopiclone for sleep off an on, and GHB off an on, until I got my prescription for Xanax last Thursday (Sept.1st) I'm on my third day Cipralex at 5mg, and I've been taking about 1.5mg Xanax at night, and I still hardly get much relief from that. I don't know why my benzo tolerance is so high, because I thought Xanax was supposed to be the "crack" of benzo's. So far, I've tryed Xanax, Clonazepam, and Valium (only 10mg Valium once) and none of them have really affected me much at all unless I drink with them. Even for anxiety I don't find them much help, the only thing that takes away my anxiety completely for a few hours is about 2-3grams GHB dosage.

- Now I'm praying not to become dependent on Xanax, tonight is day 4 on the first time on Xanax, and I took my use down to 1.25mg. If I don't take a benzo, or zopiclone, I have a pressure in my chest, increased anxiety, increased heart rate/blood pressure, and butterflies in my stomach, and I find it VERY hard to sleep.

- BTW like I said before, this ALL started a few days after my last 5mg dose of Paxil tapering. All my ANXIETY returned. When I was on paxil, I didn't have to depend on a benzo for anxiety relief or anything. I'm hoping the Cipralex (Lexapro) will kick in and do the same. But can anyone give me an insight as to why my benzo tolerance is shot through the roof when I've hardly used benzo's? Well, maybe not shot through the roof, but pretty high for a person who's never tryed Xanax before, and just started using Benzo's 6 months ago, and not daily, with 3 week breaks in between dosages? BTW, my dad was an Alcoholic before I was born as well, but my mother NEVER drinks, and has never even been drunk, and never drank before I was born or nothing.

If anyone could shed some light, it would be greatly appreciated. I hope it just my serotonin thats messed up and I can get back on track with the Cipralex because I pray to god - I just don't want to become dependent on Xanax or any benzo for that matter.

Sorry for the long post, and anyone that replies to this, I owe you one.

If you don't want to become dependent on benzos, DO NOT take them everyday. Put as many days between your doses as you can.
As for why they don't have that much effect on you, I'd suspect it's from your GHB use... :\

I see... Ok, but is there any other supplement I can take to increase GABA levels other than regular GABA. Regular GABA is not even available here in Canada, an I don't blame them either... I hate the effects of regular GABA. Anyway, what about L-Glutamine, or L-Theanine? Would those help with GABA levels at all, or harm them more?

BliZ0r: Sorry, which Pharmaceuticals would increase GABA levels?

This is the most off topic/confusing/random comment thread i've ever seen...

Sorry for the lack of input... But the only things I know of that increase the effects of GABA are alcohol, benzo's, ghb, etc... I don't think you can "Increase GABA" naturally...

I don't think Benzo's increase the effects of GABA, but rather don't they just stimulate certain GABA receptors? Also - why is Xanax so much more severe for withdrawal than Ativan when they both have similar half-lives, maybe Xanax is a few hours shorter, but.. how come hardly anybody says anything about Ativan withdrawal? I also don't see the point in taking Benzodiazepines for a recreational purporse unless it is Rohypnol or something really strong, because I've tryed Xanax, Clonazepam, Valium, Lorazepam and none of them have recreational purposes to me, so I don't see the addiction potential, the only addiction potential I can see for benzo's is the thereapeutic use level for several months or years. Maybe it just me, btu benzo's just don't have any euphoria for me, just sedation and mild anxiety relief - but I guess that's what they are for anyway. ;)

- I just didn't understand how some people claim to get a "euphoric" feeling off of taking Xanax or Ativan or Valium. I also find that all benzo's for me take at least 45 minutes to an hour to kick in, even Xanax dissolved under the tongue or even chewing them. They don't really kick in until an hour later for me, and I just feel a mild anxiety relief a long with a mild sedation, so I just don't don't see how benzo's are so recreational. Maybe If I could find some Rohypnol it would be a different story, but so far IMO, GHB blows all benzo's out of the water as far as Euphoria and anti-anxiety properties go so to speak.

Cheers and sorry for getting a little off topic, thanks for the info though folks.

Benzos increase the effect of GABA.

Pharmaceuticals like vigabatrin (sabril). Note: mixing vigabatrin and benzos is probably a good way to kill yourself.

Picamilon: which is a supplement that contains GABA and binded Niacin. It crosses the blood-brain-barrier.

Maybe you shouldn't limit the discussion to GABA, if your problem is anxiety, you should consider:
L-theanine (helps during the day)
Taurine
B-vitamins! (Take a B-100 on a full stomach)
Clonidine or Guanfacine (these things are great!)
