Not sure if this is necessarily the right forum, so please move if necessary, but I figured it would be a good place to start.

Basically, Insomniac Events, which puts on alot of the biggest shows across the US, banned lights at their shows to prevent cuddle puddles, which were deemed a fire hazard.

In the comments section after the FB note, there seemed to be two camps, those for and those against (duh!). Of those against the ban, people seemed to fall into two categories, those who felt that lights were harmless, and those who argued that lights were self-expression.

Wanna start a discussion here, too, so let us know what you think...

I honestly think it's a good policy at this time in SoCal rave history.

Let's be honest...people giving light shows = people visibly on MDMA. It's really that simple. In order for the scene to survive they need to put on a legitimate face the electronic music scene there. I am not from SoCal, so I can't really speak from first-hand experience but it seems to be one of the last places in the US where there are massives on a regular basis. There is a huge contingent of kandiRaVeRs there and while harmless and fun, they scream "DRUG USE" which is not what we want the entire electronic music scene to be associated with. I am from the east coast, and lightshows really arent prevalent here, nor are massives.

So yeah, I agree with their policy of banning lightshows.
It might seem trivial, but it's an effort to preserve their ability to throw parties

:D

A lot of that has gone out of fashion at clubs in Canada. Its more dress code, although really crappily dressed people.

A lot of the times at venues the light setups are like 30K+ so I don't really know what you need glowsticks for.

I think if you're throwing an event on, who cares? At a private party it'd be awesome.

I'd much rather have poi or something. :D

Whistles should be confiscated at the door.

Yeah lightshows aren't that big in Europe as well, I guess the EDM culture is just different across the pond (and in the East Coast). I imagine this is going to piss off a lot of socal ravers.

Why does a scene that grew out of a counterculture need to legitimize itself to the mainstream? Perhaps we should ban dayglo tapestries at doofs since you know,
they scream "DRUG USE"
.

I think was a great decision.. absolutely great. At first I thought they we're stopping all lazer and lightshows from the stage.. and I was gonna say WAT? But lightshows to people on drugs just draw more attention to this more and more popular "underground" scene.

I wont lie... when I was 17 and in Chicago warehouses I loved a good lightshow on a high dose of MDMA, but im past it and realize the errors of my way and how it made the scene look bad.

since other people have chimed in, guess i might as well put i my opinion.

I play with lights even when im not on drugs (actually, usually when im not on drugs) and I find them to be alot of fun. lets face it, in a dark room, lights leave tracers to everyone. I hate giving lightshows, and i hate getting them even more. I just like to be creative, like hand poi.

I would have preferred that they either a) had a special sitting section, and banned it on the dancefloor (actually, why the hell didnt they do this anyways? not like cuddle puddles are going to stop) or b) had a special section for lights. I think it is a slap in the face to everyone who is out there legitimately trying to be creative.

but i never go to massives, so i guess it doesnt really affect me. Insomniac is co-sponsoring a couple shows here, but they are dubstep shows, and i never use lights at dubstep shows anyways

I think it's stupid for one reason: they aren't going to stop anything, people will sneak lights in. Often, lights are associated with drug use, but at the same time, there are plenty of people who like playing with lights sober. Those who are just there for the drugs sitting on the floor out of their minds are still gonna be there doing just that. And they were always there, cuddle puddles aren't new.

Honestly, I never use lights, and I don't get light shows, but it's such a huge part of the culture, thinking about being at a rave without it seems weird. Insomniac has the right to do this, but it just seems so wrong and un-ravey. They kind of did themselves in though, letting such young people in... something bad was bound to happen. Rave promoters benefit from doing 18 and up events... way less to worry about.

This is why I'm glad I don't live in California. They have these huge commercial events and the scene has a lot of young attendees. This shit would never happen where I live, and if it did, they'd lose some attendance. These kids who wanna bring their lights in aren't gonna put their money where their mouth is and stop going to EDC though... haha.

I can see why it happened. I know this will piss a lot of people off. I personally don't care. I actually almost want to go just to see what this would be like lol. I would HATE to be a security guard though, having to be a light nazi and all that.

They can ban anything for all I care. Insomniac has failed to put up a good event besides EDC in a couple years now. Underground parties are a lot more fun than massives nowadays.

light nazi job would SUCK.... the lgith shows draw more attention to the parties and they get shut down early because of it!!! All light shows do is draw attention from security, and when the news infiltrates warehouse parties and videotapes it and slaps it on the 10 o'clock news...... its nothing but bad news. That happened in chicago in 2002 and that was half the reason the scene died in under a year and a half there.

MDMA isn't the only thing lightshows are sick on...on few hits of good L some lightshows are awesome. Especially when it's a decent looking female and she kinda up on your lap with some fishnets on...yummm.

Interesting. It's pretty normal here. I mean if you ever mention that you may have gone to a rave over the weekend people who aren't in the know will ask things like "Oh. Do you do all the little lights in your face?" type questions.

The more I think about this, the more sense it makes. I fucking hate light shows. :D

I always did think it was strange to go to a place where someone spent thousands of dollars and hours of time setting up an amazing light display only to have your friends wave $10 lights right in front of your face.

For me that would be a mood / expectations scenario. I will agree that poi gets more respect from me as far as skill goes than setting up a computer show.
