insomnia help

^ really, please provide some references/literature to back this up? Or are you just referring to the after effects & feeling drowsy for up to 24 hours after a strong dose?

Personally I love promethazine for both opiate potentiation & hayfever.

Yeah sorry i didn't mean literally although high doses and overdoses probably would cause some brain damage, people have died from the drug anyway they don't sell it in the states anymore do they?

^ It is rx only apparently in the states, not sure why. Not sure about deaths from it by itself, but combined with codeine in cough syrup it has killed.

[QUOTE-]I can :)

Less chance of having a dramatic overdose/death and much less addictive.[/QUOTE]

This.

It's funny though, that doctors are wary of prescribing benzodiazepines long term due to addictive potential but antipsychotics used long term can have very serious side effects. Extrapyramidal disorders, anhedonia, emotional disturbances, weight gain, hyperglycemia. All symptoms that are very unpleasant for the patient, and which in some cases can be life threatening.

There are so many drugs out there that are used for medical treatment either long term or short term, prescribed readily in a lot of cases, yet it seems to be just the drugs that are fun or extremely damaging to a person that are heavily regulated and restricted. :\

do u plan to stop methadone

Well yes/no lol, I maybe a lifer not sure there are times i get really fed up paying for it more than anything, that's what bothers me. I feel there should be funding for it dispensing hard when your a pensioner to pay $60 out of your pension. A for the actual drug itself wouldn't phase me, i actually worry more how i would be off it would i revert back to old ways. 8o8o8o8o.

well, seroquel caused my RLS to flare up incredibly, so i would suggest even if you do not have any restless leg syndrome symptoms, it would not be a good choice as a sleep aid over any sustained period, it will induce akathisia in many people and may remain even when the medication is no longer being taken.

very very unpleasant and will drive you insane if you get akathisia when trying trying to sleep

yeah i got full body akathisia from a 200mg dose.
its a shame because it makes me suitably drowsy for sleep with little effect the next day, but i didnt realise i was in agony with uncontrollable movement, twitching and incredible pain and mental discomfort for hours any time i took it, it was difficult to distinguish between being asleep and being awake.

looking at the chemistry behind what makes seroquel works gives a great insight into why it causes such problems

^ At least the new antipsychotics aren't as bad the old phenothiazines and other typical antipsychotics. When I first met my girlfriend, her doctor had prescribed trifluoperazine to her for panic attacks with hallucinations, and she was taking it almost every day. I talked to her about it and got her to only use it when she is having an episode, as daily use could lead to permanent side effects.

Good idea to research them as well... people should learn as much as they possibly can about medications they are considering/are taking. :)

Why shouldn't you have to pay for it? That money encourages the pharmacies to actually carry the methadone program and pays for the methadone they keep in stock. Paying $60 a fortnight isn't so bad when you compare it to the costs of using again. And if the money issue is so bad, why don't you taper off and go clean?

hey mate, i just got a hold of 2 meds that helped me sleep like nothing else before.
im not sure if it will work for you due to difference in chemical imbalance in each other brains, but even though i had quite broken sleep last night (due to strange sleeping positions causing my arms or legs to go numb as i was sleeping on them lol)

discuss the following meds with your doctor.
Neurontin (gabapentin) 300mg x3 (total 900mg per
Catapres (clonidine) .1mg
Baclofen 10mg

as i said previously i have been battiling insomnia due to pain my legs which now could be a form of fibromyalgia , but it may not be.

anyway, i did research (with the help of Mr Blonde) and kind of did some research that back tracked a fair bit with a few conditions and medications.

anyway, its taken me over 3 hours to write this post loli hoe [[ooooooooooo

they will probably offer u mirtazepine if u go2 the dr.
other wise the otc 1st generaltion sedating histamines work fine
doxylamine (restavit)
promethazine (phenergan) said to take 1-3 25mg tabs on the box. so talk 75mg & got me real tired. its actually a weak antiypsyschotic. & its OTC!
diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Unisom)

they will make u more tired than any benzo. being calm makes u get to sleep easier but bezos to me arnt sleeping tablets.. i actually like to take em in the morning. they actually give me more energy because it calmes me from my anxious state & bring me back to normal.
im sure anyone without anxiety could use benzos (especially temazepam) for insomnia

Hey there bluelighters im new here so be nice...

Ive got a question if anyone can help out,
ive been suffering from insomnia for around 8 years now with the last 3 years been the worst. Ive been to multiple doctors and explained my circumstances (not asking for benzos or anything) just asking if there is anything they would recommend to help me relax and stay asleep.
Around a 6 months ago my gf was prescribed a low dose of seriquel (25mg) and she suggested i give it ago and see if it helped with a few days of taking a small dose half of a 25 mg or a whole depending on how bad i couldnt sleep i noticed a substantial difference in my sleeping patterns, i was sleeping incredibly well and waking up feeling great. My question is this how should i approach a doctor to tell him this without sounding like a drug addict trying to get a fix?
or if anyone knows anywhere that i could go to discuss my sleeping problems it would be much appreciated.

thanks!:)

Also, I wouldnt get used to any one tab. Talk to your doc about this concern. Maybe try to also get some temazepam so you can switch between the 2.

As others have mentioned, sedating Antihistamines (including Promethazine, Diphenhydramine, Doxylamine) are quite useful for treating insomnia, although they all seem to make me feel groggy the next morning...

Just like to point out that using these antihistamines for insomnia will only work short-term and long-term use will not only give tolerance and rebound insomnia but you'll notice a raft of nasty side effects as they're anticholinergic too.

It's slightly amusing that these sedating Antihistamines are available OTC in Australia yet Benzos require a prescription. IME 1 x 25 mg Phenergan (Promethazine) made me more drowsy than 40 mg Valium (Diazepam) 8o
But yes, I very much understand Benzos being Schedule 4 due to their abuse potential.

From experience, it seems that Pharmacists are a lot more reluctant to let you buy Restavit (Doxylamine succinate) than Phenergan. Of the 4 times I asked to buy Restavit from various pharmacies, the pharmacist looks at me like I've done something wrong or offensive, despite me saying that I need it for sleep; it seemed ridiculous coz that's why Restavit is used!

Whereas with Phenergan, I tell them that I occasionally have Hayfever, and I also have lots of insomnia and want it for sleep, and they just hand it over to me!

when i first took 75mg of pheneergan (promethazine) which is the actual max dose it suggests (1-3 25mg tabs) it make me real tired. way more than 40mg of valium.. & u dont even need a script... helps with allergies to

^ 75mg of promethazine is huge if you have no tolerance, even for an antihistamine. I'm still drowsy from 25mg more than 12 hours later.

just get a script for avanza. and repreve if you can. they combo n ice together for sleep . not sure if avanza can cause TD though anyone know?

lol at first 2 phernergans would get me to sleep, only took them maybe 5 times in total, last time i took 7-8 and it didnt even make me drowsy.
but i have bad issues with getting to sleep.

^ Regarding the promethazine issue, that wouldn't surprise me. A pharmacist I know told me that they used to use it for that once, but it's become decidedly unpopular now... you can still buy a children's syrup here OTC containing paracetamol, codeine and promethazine. It's for treatment of moderate to severe pain, where 'sedation is considered beneficial.' Beneficial for the parents, perhaps! :D

^ Yeah they are available, but as for a specific OTC sedative for children it's basically that syrup whose name escapes me now.

Ha ha, if you become/are already a parent, you will have one sedated kid on your hands. :)

^ No, it's Pain Stop for Children... I haven't seen Avil syrup, I've seen Benadryl Original but I thought it was a pseudoephedrine product? May be confused with something else here though. And of course there is Polaramine, Phenergan and Vallergan syrups. :D
