Inhaling gas by mistake

A paranoid health question:

Yeasterday when a friend smoked weed in a bong he noticed that sometimes the lighters flame dies with the gas still pumping, but if he don't notice this he still keep sucking and then inhaling ligther gas for a short, short time.

Questions:

1) Even if it is just a little unburned gas he gets in to his lungs during a night of bongsmoking, can it still kill some of his braincells? (he usually hold the smoke down for 5-8 seconds)

2) When the lighter is lit, does all the gas really get burned or will some manage to escape unburned and enter the lungs of the smoker?

1. nothing to worry about dude. the amount, if at all inhaled, would be too small to do any real damage. why is your mate leaving the lighter there anyway? once the cone is lit, it's lit.

2. depending on the quality of the butane in the lighter, pretty much all of it burns. even the impurities, i imagine, would be flammable.

He is using a big pipe connected to a bong and it needs a flame there for 2-3 seconds for the weed to catch fire (depending on how dry the weed is).

^ That's how to do it. Also, why doesn't he just watch the bowl as he lights it? Why does the flame go out if the gas keeps going? If the gas is going then the flame should work unless he only smokes outside or near a fan something.

His brain cells aren't what he needs to worry about, he needs to concentrate on not exhaling around a lit lighter or else the gas in his lungs might ignite.

Nothing ruins a high more than seeing your smoke buddy's ribcage explode. :|

You should tell him to stop.

we all get to huff hydrocarbons when pumping gas, using oil base paint and varnish, using parts washers, etc .

funny shit ya know - watching buds with cement all on their faces -- looking like axe scars and what not .
fuck youth !

this is a common problem for (sorry, have to say it...) dumb smokers

anyone with pyro experience knows that the HOTTEST part of any flame is the very tippy-top. and for a butane lighter, the blue part of the flame is only the first stage of combustion, and there is a large quantity of unburned fuel.

i see lots of smokers shoving the lighter so far into the bowl that you can see only the blue part burning the weed, and the rest of the unburned fuel is traveling through the pipe and into your lungs. it makes the weed taste terrible and it doesn't provide enough heat to properly cherry the bowl.

proper technique is to spark the lighter far away from the bowl and slowly bring the tip of the flame towards the corner of the bowl while inhaling gently. if you are doing it correctly, you will see the flame become drawn towards the airflow. also note that you do not need to hold the lighter upside-down like a retard and burn your fingers.

if your weed is properly cured and ground up, the bright yellow tip of the flame should INSTANTLY begin to brown and burn the corner of the bowl. at this point you should be able to remove the lighter and inhale with greater force. the increase in oxygen will carry the cherried ember across the bowl and allow you to milk the hit without inhaling undue amounts of unburned butane.

This man knows what he is talking about.

LMAO!

...This was a joke, right?

^ Uh if the weed is on fire you're doin' it wrong. It should just be embers that catch and move across the material. If you pack a bowl the right way, and light it the right way, you should only have to use the lighter one time at the start of the session to cherry the bowl.

you mean session or toke? if you have it going through the whole session, that seems pretty wasteful. i generally extinguish the bowl beyween hits
