Important: What should be in the Codeine FAQ?

30mg for analgesia seems a bit high psilo considering the recommended codiene dose in OTC paracetamol + codiene tablets is around 20mg and iburpofen + codeine tablets is 25.6mg. Perhaps it's decent for pain relief at lower doses only due to a synergy with paracetamol/ibuprofen? You could be right though; it's been years since I've taken anything less than 30mg (panadeine forte) for pain relief.

I think mindtools may have been hinting at the lowest recreational dose? That will depend on tolerance, and a number of other factors (eg CYP2D6 metabolisation). The FAQ is still a work in progress but I'm not sure if recommended recreational doses will be included as there may be too many variables?
 
OTC codeine works for pharmacists : 27/08/2010 :

This week's poll asked 'listers whether they'd tried OTC codeine containing analgesics and, if yes, whether they'd found them more effective than plain paracetamol/ibuprofen.

Well yes, say over 2/3 of respondents, representing 78% of those who'd tried these products. If you allow for the 5-10% of the population said to be slow metabolisers (2D6 deficient), this produces a 'yes, this works' outcome approaching 90%.

Given that the evidence suggests codeine is ineffective in doses less than 30mg, what's going on here? Is the apparent efficacy of these products in our sample a placebo effect? Is the evidence flawed? Perhaps one of our academic 'listers might like to propose an explanation.

I have read this many times on a few different sites...

Although the dose of codeine required to provide any analgesic effect is unclear, it is believed that a minimum dose of 30 mg codeine is required. The majority of combination products available in Australia contain doses of codeine less than this.

Yup, I was reffering to recreational dose. The lowest I've tried so far was 80mg and I felt it.

if my risk of stroke was 1% and there was a risk of a 30% increase from taking 1200 mg ibuprofen then my total risk has just grown from 1% to 1.3%

hence why the TGA issued a somewhat confused statement that where people had died from strokes that they had only seen 8 cases where their might have been a casual link between stroke and ibuprofen.

hardly evidence to suggest that ibuprofen causes stroke. but you wouldn't have known that from how the media drove that story. a slow fucking news day was what that was.

I'm not suggesting there isn't risk or harm but anyone who is taking regular doses of ibuprofen for pain purposes simply needs to see a doctor who'll give em forte in a second (or if your lucky like moi some pure codiene).

I hear you chugs - i was thinking more of a) completeness for the FAQ, and b) some people are prone to fits - those people in particular need to be careful if sourcing codeine from nurofen+ etc
 
just thought i'd share this for any1 who thinks codeine is piss weak, i have done CWE with between 24 - 30 n+ tabs about 20 times in the past n thought it was pretty good but didnt experience any so called euphoria, so today i bought 2 packs n done a CWE with 45 tabs n all i can say is WOW.....im getting waves of intense feelings thru my head and body n yes....EUPHORIA.I.'m thinking any1 that thinks it aint too good just aint having enough, n also i should add i done one last night with 30 n+ tabs so my tolerence would be higher than normal, and im still getting awsome effects.Now i have something decent to take while theres no MD around.....CODEINE I LOVE YOU VERY MUCHHHHHHHHHH=D
 
Yeah codeine is very underrated, as long as your tolerance is down a bit and you aren't one of the 10% poor metabolizers, it's a really nice opiate buzz :D The biggest issue is the inability to redose within a few hours and the ceiling dose. Just need to doxylamine on hand in case the itches get the best of you.
 
yeah only complaint is about an hour afta posting that i got extremely nausous and had to lay down for a cuple hours, im thinkin maybe because i didnt use a coffee filter only a piece of cloth n a fair bit of ibuprofen may hav been in the codeine still, or just cause i havnt had that much before, not 2 sure.
 
^ You are always better off running it through a coffee filter or two after the fabric. Even if it is fine after the fabric which is debatable the coffee filters give you peace of mind and guarantee the safety of the method if they don't break.

An antihistamine would probably be helpful in reducing the nausea, much like crankinit I would suggest doxylamine succinate (brand name 'Restavit') at a dose of 25-50mg.

My tolerance is so high 800-1000mg feels like 100mg nowdays when i combine it with alprazolams and DXM n if i have sum oxy on hand. Its taken over everything n is my drug of choice now :!

The reason why u were sick is im presuming u just have low tolerance. Try getting sum OTC travel calm original. Nothing is better for nausea. Its cheap and OTC. 1st time i had a high dose (500mg) i vomited the next morning and same with oxys. 20mg had me nodding and next day i felt sick as a dog and vomiting but ive got to a point where id need 2 oxys (80s) to feel a nice buzz which is bout the same as 20mg when i 1st started. Just a reminder that opies and especially benzos are highly addictive and the WD-s are very bad and tolerance rises so fast u will never feel that same first few rushes that u initially got when 1st using the stuff.

Sometimes i feel that i need to get my shit together and maybe even seek medical help as i feel its getting out of hand and there isnt a day where i wouldnt think about it. I choose it over everything. once a week, then 3 times a week then 5 times a week and before u realize ur diggin deeper n deeper. Just thought id let u know just to be careful with it. It may seem like a weak opiate but in reality its not just the drug that u are addicted to its other things as well that contribute to it as well.Just my 2 cents.
 
cheers 4 da advice. tbh uppers r my thing and im on abit of a break at the moment from em all so im just experimenting pretty much.N i dnt think my tolerence is that low to downers i ate a whole bottle of diazepam the other week in like 5 - 6 hours(first time ever havin em).... i do admit i ended up yackin and passing out but that wasnt till i started smokin sum dope. I also occasionly take seroquels to get to sleep or if im realy fiendin and i can handle 400mg+ pretty well.I'm more thinkin it was a shitload of ibuprofen in the codeine still cause im still feelin pretty queezy 9 hours lata n i got a sore throat for some reason.And also being on a detox diet at the moment for a few health reasons probably isnt helping.Also sustanon do you know if codeine weakens your immune system??if it is im basically defeating the purpose of this break from uppers which i certainly dont want.Also fuck bro hate to be you having a tolerence that high, maybe its time to change your drug of choice:)

Don't take stronger opiates if you don't want your tolerance to spike. I used to love CWE codeine, then after using oxycodone a heap, codeine was never the same (unless taken in ridiculous doses 500mg+ combined with other downers, benzos, alcohol etc).

I've never been dependant on opiates so I don't know about them from that perspective but IME if you hit the more potent opiates, codeine won't be the same, even after long breaks.

I'm not bothering with codeine anymore, because it's a waste of my money and time due to tolerance, not worth it I guess. Though I did have ~500mg the other day to see if it felt worth it again (which it didn't) after not having any for a month or so.

The pharmacist looked at me really suspiciously the last time I bought one of the packs too, as if to check my face to keep a mental picture so she could remember if I came back too soon for codeine. That gave me a big grin and I just smiled and politely bought the pack having that internal dialogue about the ridiculousness of the situation. They took down some serial number off the box (first time I've noticed anything unusual when buying codeine here in WA btw).
 
hahah yeh my local chemists r starting to ask alot of questions when i go in there, like where is the pain your experiencing? how long have you had the pain? why havnt you seen a doctor about it?it's like there trying to catch me out and refuse me sale lol. n writing down a serial number for neurofen or similar? wow only time ive seen that is when ive bought sinus relief

Here in Canberra some Chemists record your ID for Codeine purchases.
 
I've been using a 25 micron nylon square mesh that came with a set of bubble bags to do CWE's, is this just as good as using a couple of coffee filters?

Finally catching up eh? If i could be bothered i was gonna quote your post a while back on how you don't think that you could really get addicted to anything and had abused alot..but here we are. The crew was spot on lol!

How is the Codeine FAQ coming along to those who are compiling it? Any ideas when it will be published?
