O.K basically 2 years ago I was at 110kg. I started going for walks/jogs, only because I'm so unfit I can't run for more than 3 minutes at a time... :\ and ate healthy for a few months. got down to 95kg before suffering from depression for a short period and starving myself (not intentionally, just had no appetite) down to ~82kg. Since then I've put some weight back on and I'm currently at 95kg. I'm 179cm tall (5ft 11")

Not only do I want to lose weight, I want to get FIT. I want to be able to run for more than 20 minutes at a time. I've never in my life been able to go for a short sprint without being puffed out. I've already started eating healthy again. Water only and cutting all the junk food out. I might have a pizza or something once a week, but that's no biggie.

Anyone got any tips for this? I was thinking of just doing the same thing I did 2 years ago. Go for a walk with set jogging points in between (aka. start running from this tree, stop running at that light pole :D LOL)

Once I lose weight and become fit, I want to start building some muscle and start doing Muai thai. but that's no biggue, just want to focus on getting fit for now.

What's the best way? and is there anything other than walking/running out there to improve my cardio? Any foods to avoid? I know I should avoid pastas and rice before bed.

Thanks =)

I think you should actually not start off with jogs in your walks right away. You want to ease your way into things and it's better that way also less injury will happen. So I say go on walks and the first day just go on a steady walk as far as you can. Then the next day go for a longer walk and then start speeding up the walk every other day or whenever you think it's right. Then start jogging and then soon start running. It will take awhile though. I also recommend you do some bicycling and run stairs in your house if you have them or find a place that has stairs. Even try to walk/run up hills when I did track that totally kicked my ass sometimes but it was a workout. Yet you really do need to get some strength training in your workout or else you won't be losing weight but breaking down muscles ect. You need to build muscles so start doing crunches, sit ups, push ups basically anything along those lines until you can get to the weights.

Remember you also need to watch your diet. Don't become too strict because you will want to keep this diet for the future and not just for the time you're trying to lose weight or else you'll gain it all back. So eat vegetables and fruits....lean meat and drink a lot of water! Yes, you can cheat somedays but don't go overboard. It also helps to write down what you eat and the calories. Also plan ahead it helps. You can join a site like SparkPeople....online tracking thing it's kind of confusing but still worth trying out. Any ways good luck!

Agreed on the fact that you should start slow - it's really easy to hurt yourself when your joints and muscles aren't used to excersising. Maybe think about combining weightlifting training with some cardio from the beginning - more muscle mass means better metabolism, which is equal to losing fat faster. It has always been more interesting for me to do multiple sports at the same time - you work on your body in many different ways plus its definately more fun, you most of all don't want to get bored or dispirited. Thing about the longterm goals. Be proud of how you eat, gain strength and live in general. You have made a good decision - your body will thank you:)

Thanks guys.

To be honest I haven't gone for a walk yet... :/ But if I'm not working tonight Ill definitely go!

And another problem, I seem to get uncontrollably hungry at nights. Just the way I've trained my body I guess, no matter how much I eat I never feel full. I guess i started cause of boredom, even though I have entertainment...But now it's just weird.... and I'm still eating alot, even if it is healthy.

Well at least the food is healthy. What I say you do is eat more meals in a day. Don't eat big ones but make sure every now and then you're eating something and no I don't mean big portions or unhealthy stuff. It keeps your body on track and also the more water you drink the less hungry you will be. Also always eat a big breakfast and never skip it. You also need to sleep as well if you don't get enough hours or if you get too much if messes up your weight ect.

i think you should start by building muscle because you need to have some weight to bulk up, also when you have more muscle its easier to burn fat

and when im depressed i usually gain weight becuase of comfort food lol

^second the above. Build some muscles first and then do more cardio. Do sports when you get depressed, it's much healthier / more effective in the long run than stuffing yourself with comfort food.

I'm not depressed I jsut eat alot because of boredom. I have a VERY short attention span. Even when eating healthy. so in between add breaks ill go grab a chocolate, or these days; a kiwi fruit <3 etc...

But yes I have to stop skipping breakfast and eat smaller meals. I don't have my license yet so going to the gym is a pain. So that's why I'm gonna go for walks and lsoe some weight. Note: some, not all :) and then when I get my license which should be in 2 or so months I'll start going gym.

1. Start Slow. SERIOUSLY. Don't worry about what anyone else says about this. If you can only run for 3 minutes, only run for 3 minutes. This will go away with time.

2. Forgive yourself, and keep going. If you can only exercise for 10 minutes today, do it! 10 minutes is better than nothing even if it doesn't feel like it. If you skip a few days, don't give up, always keep going.

3. Do not expect instant results. Getting fit takes time!

4. Work on your eating habits too. Baby steps with this too. (DON'T SKIP BREAKFAST EVER!) There is so much info on the internet that can help you. Learn more about nutrition. It's addicting.

5. KEEP A FOOD DIARY! My recommendation is www.myfooddiary.com but there are many.

I am successfully getting fit for the first time in my entire life. I was always pretty lazy and naturally skinny when I was younger. I never thought I'd be able to get to where I am now, but I actually enjoy exercising now. I started with walking and slowly increased the running and now I can run for long periods of time without stopping and I seriously CRAVE exercise.

That's the best part: I got addicted to exercising same as I got addicted to drugs. Only difference is that im not planning to quit= D

BAbes, Who you kidding!!! Your not going to go to the gym!! In your post I can already read an excuse (of not having a car) Why cant you walk to the gym? or do you own excersie?

This might sound harsh, however the first steep is you need to be honest with your self... Your the only one your eating healthy for any trying to excersse for.

I know how you feel, I am the same, I have been on every diet under the sun, every shake pill (duramine) - VERY GOOD.

I have a gym member ship and never use it. Also had a personal training, which helped me alot, however got to expensive.

My weight jumps up and down all the time. When I put on weight get stressed so I start to eat more shit, because I think what the hell, I will start again tomorrow. However tomorrow never comes.

Eating for no reason. We all do it, but next time take one second to think and ask your self DO I REALLY NEED THIS?? Half the time you don't, you just want it because it tastes good. Our bodies can survive two weeks without food (We defently need water). - So I guess it's just about shrinking your metabolism.

You said you ate Pizza in your previous post. Ok once in a while its not to bad. How much are you talking? PIZZA IS CRAP, however it taste really really good. If you are starting a strick diet to get you in the right habits, NO NO PIZZA.

- I think you would really like a weight loss tablet called duramine, it doesnt make you as hungry also gives you energry to excercise. - probably not the answer, however will help you get started.

- I guess when I'm in this situation, I have to ask myself the question. AM I eating Carp? if the answer is yes - then your not going to loose weight,
- AM I DOING EXCERSISE?? If the answer is no, then your not going to loose weight.

I think you sould see a naturopath, they are unreal. They Place you on an diet that is suited only to you, you will not only loose weight, you will also not be depressed.

Weight is a huge battel, which can sometime get the better of you. Just rememeber to START NOW, because if you keep saying in your mind - I'll excerise later or eat healthy tomorrow you want loose any weight.

I know exactly how you feel and I go through these stages all the time. I have to watch what I eat very closely to try and be the size I am now. If I dont and I eat like a hourse I put on weight and feel like crap.

Let me know how you go. I have tried so many diets. I have also done a food diary, which didnt work because I had to show my trainner and I would just make it up. I was to lazy to even fill it out.

You will be suprise how much weight you can loose and how good you can feel if you are eating the correct foods and the correct amounts.

START NOW!!!!!

Losing weight with diet pills is a bad idea, because you will most likely just put the weight back on after you stop using them and they often have nasty side-effects (in the case of duramine - anger/headaches etc)

Actually you would want to speed up your metabolism by eating small healthy meals regularly and plenty of exercise, it would be your stomach shrinking which is also not a good path to go down

Not all pizza is "crap", sure fast food takeaway pizza is terrible, but if you make it at home correctly (very thin base, fresh tomato sauce, vegetables and some meat), you wont have to deprive yourself of things you enjoy

Haha I was about to say this might be the reason when you first mentioned eating at night. You'll find exercise helps curb your appetite somewhat as well.

I'll also second the recommendation of cycling. It is a million times more enjoyable than traveling by foot and even if when I do go for runs I always bike to the lake or other nice places to do so.

In a way Estar is kind of right. I am making excuses. But the car to the gym excuse is legitimate since the closest g ym is a 2 hour walk away. and I don't have 5-6 hours to blow going to the gym, doing my gym session and then walking back.

I think I need to fix my sleeping pattern aswell. goign to bed at 5am isnt helping. The motivation is there, but it's just extremely hard to start. I know once I'm in the rhythm of things I should be easier. I also found it easier the first time because I publically announced to all my friends and family that I would lose weight. Which means if I didn't it would be embarrasing.

I promise to all you guys, I will go for a walk tomorrow! Otherwise there was no point in making this thread. Gotta do something apart from slacking off.

Ah yes this too will be helped by exercise. It is also a component of why you are bored at night and therefore eating. I think you have an awesome chance to really make a difference in many aspects of your life right now and that you know what you have to do. Just get over that initial painful first exercise step and you'll be tired at sunset, up at sunrise, will recognize hunger versus boredom, and a satiated appetite versus being full. :D
