I hate waiting for the postman.

It's only half a joke really, fact is men did die in that war protecting British sovereign territory and people who consider themselves british from foreign invasion. Argentina can go fuck themselves frankly. I'm not quite sure why they thought they would be able to get away with trying to take it. Maybe the military junta misinterpreted thatcher's support of them as weakness but it was idiocy to think they could actually forcibly take it like they tried to.

I mean really, they knew thy would be up against the most elite fighting force in the world. It can only be that they thought we would roll over and let them have it.

Britain commits heinous war crime in desperate scramble to hold on to one of its few remaining scraps of stolen 'sovereign territory', but that's okay because... well, there were British people inhabiting the island and, erm, look at poor old Simon's face.

Las Malvinas son Argentinas!

Live with it.

Fact of life is that all national borders are artifically drawn up through violent power struggle, that's just the way things are. There's no such thing as a morally righteous border, it's all just land controlled through violence no matter where you're looking at. In light of that I would expect the British army to defend any sovereign territory irrespective of where it might be or the supposed 'morality'. Vulgar display of power (pantera) it may be. No war crimes were commited though, that's something very specific.

Fact is we didn't live with it did we, we fucked them off double quick and they haven't been so moronic as to attempt to take it by force again.

They have literally zero chance of ever taking it by force, it's small enough to be controlled on the ground by the SAS and Royal Marines and the Argentinians simply don't have battle hardened elite forces like that among their ranks who would be able to challenge for it.

Regardless of how it was acquired... they were given a referendum last year:

The question put to voters was: "Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?"

More than 99% of voters said yes, according to Darren Christie, public relations manager for the Falklands Islands government. Just three people voted no. Turnout was 92%.

Well, it worked for Northern Ireland, didn't it? Just move a load of rabid Scottish and English protestants in and see how some people start to cling to a 'British' identity that's a total caricature of the reality of Britain. Though thankfully it's developed an identity of its own over the years.

I bet people in the 'Falklands' still take afternoon tea as a matter of principle rather than any kind of pleasure.

There are bigots of every flavour all over the place, unfortunately. Though I can imagine the stuff over there getting particularly annoying when almost everyone I've met from the North has been sound, usually a fucking great laugh and not at all bigoted. I remember a rebel song getting shut up pretty quickly on Saint Patrick's one night in a pub around here which was packed out with students / expats from the South and the North, and that was the closest I've ever come to seeing it in the younger generation.

The older generation of both sides, however...

I'll bet it's less dangerous than Manchester nowadays anyhow. :D

No way...sectarian divide still bubbles under the surface in northern ireland. Drug dealing controlled by sectarian gangs etc, they're still tar and feathering people along the shankhill road as a mild punishment.

There was a couple of cases a year or two ago, I guess it was just the local paras going for a small show of power to warn people who's in charge of 'off the grid' activities.

Fucking hell just looking and those cases are 5-6 years ago. Where the fuck does time go?

You've only got to look at the lack of witnesses willing to give statements to the police over the punishment killing of that woman which was back in the news recently to get an idea of how safe people feel (i.e. they're still terrified of the provos/real at the very least).

None of the people connected to the case were prepared to give evidence. You realise her situation is what is commonly known as as 'dead', and has been for a good twenty years right?

Loads of people have come forward saying they know Gerry Adams was involved but refuse to give police statements because they're scared.

As for the general situation I'm sure you know more than me though.

i wonder if they take it the Brittish way; with milk. Since visiting contries where it is not custmary to serve tea with milk i have discovered that it is far nicer without, and my taste buds adjusted immeditely and tea now tastes disgusting with added milk. Why are we one of those slightly bonkers countries who do things in a different way to most of the rest of the world, it woulnt be so bad if we did these things for improvements sake. 8)

Didn't the British steal the idea of milk in tea from India though?

Interestingly enough, when it comes to drinking coffee without milk, that's actually rooted in an old (allegedly Turkish) superstition that coffee with milk would cause leprosy, rather than any concern regarding the taste. Hence the tendency throughout southern Europe to drink it without.
