Misc I feel like the smoking (cigarettes) + depression and/or anxiety studies CLEARLY have the causation backwards

So there's been studies where they've discovered a corrolation between people who smoke and people who have depression and/or anxiety.
Their takeaway (and what a couple doctors have told me) is that smoking causes a person to be more likely to have depression/anxiety.
However (like with pretty much every psychoactive substance) I feel like it's really obvious that they have the causation backwards and that what the study(ies) ACTUALLY show is that people who have depression/anxiety are more likely to smoke.
TBF my current doctor did agree with me that it was possible when I mentioned this.

i will say I just googled this and in 30 seconds the first result from NHS just proves you didn’t do any research into this

“While the relationship works both ways—people with depression are more likely to start smoking to self-medicate—studies indicate that nicotine dependence can increase the risk of developing mood disorders over time. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]”

Clearly factual

I remember once talking to a hospital psychiatrist. He said if it wasn't for uniforms etc it would be hard to differentiate between staff n patients because everyone there smokes. Generally.

My shrink works at the psych ward and as not surprised at all when i told him i started chain smoking in there. Everyone in there smokes its all there is to do

Popular in residential rehab too. So I'm told.

The older I get the more I dislike smoking. Tobacco anyway. May it was COVID fucking my lungs. Maybe a nice cigar at Christmas or something.

Nah thats only way I can cope with my current circumstances, I love I got back on them.

Fuck that's quite extreme. But you know if nothing else works, why not... What about bupropion first then?

Come round mine, I'll help you quit, bring your cigs and your lighter. Give them to me. Leave the room. I'll call you back in and return them. Now, two of the cigarettes have been up my nose filter first and returned to container. I'm not telling you what I did with your lighter...

No charge, happy to help, have a nice day...

Yeah, based on experience, not evidence.

Ive tried wellbutrin in the past doesent help at all imo. I dont think ibogaine would be a option for me actually as apparently taking it with opiates can cause heart problems

And i wuldnt care ive smoked cigs that ive dropped on the bathroom floor in filthy psych wards lol

Yeah, you'd probably have to get off opiates first then, if that's even an option.

Filthy psych ward floors, eh? I see, I see... A difficult patient. Well... I like a challenge, what if I swapped out a couple for datura spliffs? Or would that be even more tempting...

Do you know they actually made datura cigs back in the day? Ive seen ads they used it for asthma. Maybe i need datura for my asthma? Would be interesting anyway.

Ya quitting morphine really isnt a option for me because i do need it for pain. Im not actually addicted to it currently though so i dont know if just not taking it for awil then taking ibogaine would be a option

Doesent ibogaine effect the kappa receptors like salvia does? Im not sure if im ready for long acting salvia tbh lol

I did actually. I used to be really into datura, grew it, read about it in depth, didn't use it... Well... Sometimes used it. Only smoking though.

I have a bunch of old and rare books about the nightshade family. Seems to have had a lot of interest back in the day.

I'm not sure about ibogaine tbh, I don't know a lot about it. Might help reset your tolerance and you could use morphine exclusively as a painkiller more effectively. I dunno. Ask an expert. I doubt it's gonna be like salvia though. Possibly a bit dysphoric but salvia is next level out there. To be respected.

You just keep doing you. You quit fent and benzos. That's fucking hardcore. Respect.

I'll stop fucking about now.

I started smoking tobacco 1972 and continued heavily until 2005. At first it was to be cool. When mental illness started smoking gave my hands something to do. smoking took over my life, it isolated me from my family and social activities. I was able to stop cold turkey after going into hospital for cardiomyopathy, while in the hospital, my wife threw away all things related to smoking, lighters everything. I never smoked again.

It's just such a shit drug imo, and a bitch to quit too. Apart from super mild stimulation it kinda does fuck all too.

"It calms me down though!" squeal the indignant addicted. Sure it does, but only because you're a withdrawing addict fixing for normality

Shit drug, nightmare to quit, shit effects, terrible for health, makes everything nearby stink, expensive, just has no redeeming qualities at all. Imho.
