HR Giger Dies at 74

Yeah was gutted at the latter myself this morning. Odd memories of Giger; when he was in his early teens his room was plastered in Giger posters and they terrified me, being a few years younger and having the top bunk. Appreciate his work now though. Sucks how he died, too.

Yeah his artwork is some intriguing, endearing and creepy shit

Havent watched the aliens films for years but i remember the first time i watched part of Alien Resurrection, sat down to eat my dinner at the time, nearly made me throw up

I once went down to London for the day with a friend from college specifically to hunt down and buy Giger books. Unfortunately they ain't cheap so could only afford a couple but they are lushy as fuck - very nicely printed. He was a bit of an artistic hero of mine no matter how cliché that may be. It's not just his Alien designs that are good but his artwork in general is just brilliant. The sheer genius of the technique always amazed me. How the hell he gets so much detail with an airbrush is beyond me. His paintings are great too - very different to his better known airbrush stuff. His house is also rather amazing. And his designs for a couple night clubs (think there's one in Japan he completely designed the interior for and one somewhere else). Am a bit of a fanboy and said to see him go :(

HR Giger FACT! His name rhymes with 'eager' not with a Geiger counter. Apparently it really pissed him off that nobody pronounces it properly.

Ha, I never knew that about his name, just assumed Geiger. Poor bloke. I sort of know how he feels. I wouldn't mind some of his books. Who's the other dude? William Basinski? Not a similar style but a similar eerie sometimes downright scary...er...painting. I'd love to go to a Giger night club tho. Some mind fuck.

edit: idea: we get new content by making stuff like this into its own thread =D

William Basinski is indeed very eerie - bordering on scary - but I only know of his audio recordings. I do believe he is an artist but but never looked into anything beyond the linky above. According to wiki he does some video art but is mainly a composer. You may be thinking of somebody else or you may just have noticed that Basinski would make a good soundtrack to flicking through a book of Giger's artwork =D

(incidentally, knowing a little of your taste i think you may just appreciate that linky above - not to all tastes but does sound snollish to me)

The nightclub looks more like a restaurant to me but still kinda snazzy :D

And if I ever happen to bump into a gal wearing these I think I may have just found my future wife :D

I think if we could generate more discussion in some of the threads other than Gibberings, it would help. Either new topical threads (which are good for discussion & bringing people out the woodwork) ...

GUYS! This is exactly what I'm talking about

I didn't mean use another thread like Gibberings, I meant make new threads...

I must admit I was acutely aware that I was posting a lengthy response(s) to Giger-related talk in a thread where it will go totally unnoticed by anybody who likes Giger but gives nary a shit about how many people post in EADD. I might actually split it off into a new thread. Cos it's Giger and cos I can ;)

The renowned Swiss artist H.R. Giger has died at the age of 74, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall. Giger, who passed away in a Zurich hospital, was most famous for the alien monster he created for the movie of the same name.

I want those glasses.

A favourite artist of mine. Sad to see him go. He left some truly unique and original art behind across many genres, forms and styles. One of those rare artists who makes a real impression on popular culture. Even if you never heard the name you know his work.

Yes I agree that new threads would bring people in. That's partly why I created the "Maintenance and Aftercare Thread" Because our services in the UK, and Europe are different to that of say, the US and because of the reason that a lot of people who come to EADD, genuinely stay in EADD. But if newbies were to search for "Aftercare and maintenance," then the EADD thread is bound to show on results - and there's more likely a chance of them coming here.

Right off to put this child to bed n to read her some Enid Blyton BRB.

Evey

EDIT; Dan we're TRYING to have a discussion here GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR *Slaps Dan hard and Glares at him!*

Cheers, reminded me to add that thread to the directory. If it isn't already. Also a couple others.

Also that alien/gun print, I kinda want it on my wall. Not in my bedroom or anything just....somewhere.

What a shame, a great artist. One of my friends had a book of his artwork and it was full of amazing work.
Also seen so many tattoos of bio-mechanical either copies of Gigers work or heavily influenced by it.

One of my favourite artists.
Again.
Fuck.
Well, the man left us a great legacy, in his body of work. Much respect.
