Is that him? I'd never seen a picture of him before - I kind of wish I hadn't now :(. "Hellooo transgression"

^ That's him in the 60s or 70s by the look of it. I do believe that's fairly tame by some standards :D

Sculptures are also kinda kewl...

And one of my fave pix from the Alien art book featuring actual drawing/painting rather than all airbrush that he's best known for. He can draw too. I can't recall what the comedy name these had was but is a concept design for the mid-stage alien I do believe...

You probably didn't, Evey. I split it off from the other thread as it was off-topic but worthy of a thread of its own. This is an obituary and general appreciation thread for a rather fine, and now sadly rather dead, Swiss artist. You'll probably have to unsubscribe and rescubscribe to the other one if you don't want to keep up with this one. I've never actually subscribed to a thread so not sure how it works. Had no idea splitting a thread carried subscriptions over but I guess it makes sense. Apologies for any confusion <3

^ I'd not seen half of those myself either. Knew he did a fair few but some proper obscurities in there. It always annoyed me massively that ELP are so utterly shite cos I damn near bought that album several times just for the artwork... then I remembered what ELP sound like and just couldn't bring myself to do it :\

'If they like my work either they are creative... or they are crazy'. :D

I was asked by a friend of mine, a few months back, whether I was a Giger fan. To which I responded '...who?'. Turns out I'd admired his work for years without ever knowing the name of the artist.

R.I.P. Giger.

PS: when does it become appropriate to make puns? Or, indeed, less inappropriate?

Remembering what ELP sound like must've been traumatic enough. :|

Speaking of sleeves he did, Danzig III springs to mind. I was never a Giger fan particularly, but he was one of those people whose style is instantly recognisable and unique, though many have borrowed from him. A real one-off. Sad loss.

^ He did another Danzig cover too if you check that linky of album art above somewhere.

A piece that only the fairly hardcore Alien fanfolk will have actually spotted in the film but one of my faves from that series. I really was a massive Alien fanboy in my yoof so all this background stuff fleshing out the backstory was a big deal to a 13yo boy I can assure you :D

Combining two of my favourite people - and to celebrate the fact I just found out it's been made into a major full-length documentary (and quite rightly too) - The Filming of Jodorowsky's Dune. Short (very short) doc which features much Giger concept art for what was clearly going to be a stupidly good film but sadly fell apart - a tad over-ambitious perhaps. Jodorowsky is still about though and even if more or less everybody originally cast has since died everything else is in place if only somebody would fund it. Dune wasn't such a bad film (oh no it wasn't - Sting was bad, Dune was not) but it could've been sooooooooooo much better. From memory there are brief interview clips with Giger in there too as well as loads of artwork.

Nice one! I saw this was on at the ICA, but missed it and was pissed off at the time. Could have sworn it was a full length doc though :?. Not sure for all of my love of Herbert (including spending silly money on other Dune related rarities) that I would have been pissed off at missing out on spending £1 a minute on it....

Edit - Actually, having checked IMDB, it's this 90 min one I missed:

Still, ta for the youtube link, will look forward to watching that.

Edit 2 - It appears I misread your post and was also merked by the spoof doc.

^ I wasn't aware of the recent doc till I searched for that short old one I posted. Looking forward to watching it whenever I get around to it though cos I <3 Jodorowsky and I <3 Giger (I also <3 Moebius but we're not talking about him - was that the fella you were thinking of, Snolls? They are often mentioned in the same breath despite being very different artists in many ways - thematically linked though for sure). I'd fund that film myself if I could. Can't believe nobody has managed to do it yet - I know it's clearly gonna cost a ridiculous amount of money but so do all films these days and they could really make it work properly now in ways that simply weren't feasible back in the early 70s. If there's enough of a market to do a (not) making of documentary for cinema release surely there's the interest to make the actual film before it's too late. That's three sets of hardcore fanfolk who'd be chomping for it plus mainstream filmfolk who like to see pretty things (or at least impressive things - pretty is perhaps somewhat subjective with Giger).

Two of his drawings. They're a lot harder to find than his paintings and stuff but recall there being plenty (from this series by the look of it) in one of the books I once owned but managed to lose :!
