Howard Marks dying of Inoperable Cancer ��

Did anyone ever read "The Howard Marks Book of Dope Stories"?
 
They reckon that if you smoked a joint in the 80s there was something like a 90%+ chance that it was an "Howard Marks import" so to speak!

Do you remember the one in the book of dope stories about the two junkies who rob the chemists shop of all his goodies and do speedballs using holy water to cook up with?....one of my favourites that one!#,
 
That's the story...at the end they run out of water for their shots so the use some of his mum's holy water from a trip to Lourdes....one says to the other...."if you make a wish while shooting holy water it will come true"...anyway he does his shot and his mate says..."what did you wish for?"...and he says ..."a big box of drugs behind the couch and.... taa daa!!!...there they are!!" (or words to that effect)....fucking class!!

This is really sad news. May your remaining time on this planet be as pain-free as possible, Howard.
Much respect to a truly great man.
 
I loved how he was always so upbeat and positive about everything...even when sentenced to 25 years in Terra Haut (sp?) prison he still managed to befriend all the biker and inner city gangs...hell even the notoriously harsh US prison system let him out after serving only 7 years of a 25 stretch simply cos he was too nice a guy to keep locked up!!

I loves how he could have friendly dealings with people we normally associate with being so cut throat such as the IRA, the mafia, the yakuza, triads', afghan mujahedeen etc. everyone who knew him was incapable of disliking the bloke!!

Plus his sheer balls at smuggling up to 30 tonnes of dope right under the noses of the DEA....

What a bloke!!
 
Very sad news indeed.

I have seen Howard Marks' live shows three times now. The most memorable was at the Theatre Royal, Ryde, IOW -- Howard was the "Special Guest" when the Levellers played two nights running at Planet Ice, as the launch event for the Hello Pig album (true fact: My ticket had the serial number 666. The lads were on the same ferry as me, and I got them to sign it. My little bit of Rock 'n' Roll Memorabilia). This was a long time before the smoking ban, and there were quite a few joints being passed around .....
 
The trip he describes in the book about his journey to the Afridi hash factory on the NWFP on the Pakistani/Afghan border would be somewhat of a more risky venture today than it was back then. I doubt the Taliban/Al Qaida elements who roam those mountain passes who be overly enamoured by a dope smoking Welshman in their presence......although knowing Howard Marks he'd probably be able to win even them over lol!
 
Via a friend of mine I met Marksy a few times, always had various lumps of dope as you would expect and would talk about shipping a few tonnes here and there like it was a teenth stuck in yer sock. My only issue with him was giving money to terroists/mafia etc he did regret it but said thats the only way he could make the 'business' work but he did do some work for various alphabet agancies which he reckoned kinda evened it out.
 
Didn't he get out of american prison by using knowledge of what bill clinton got up to in oxford? (inhaling/not inhaling maybe, or sexual dalliances). Also, i vaguely remember reading that he worked for MI6 spying on the Brotherhood of Eternal Love's afghan hash smuggling operation; but then supposedly went native and started doing it himself.

Sad news - a genuinely nice guy - all the best howard.

Nope non of those things. He'd never met Bill Clinton while at Oxford. His best mate Ernie Combs was a member of the brotherhood of eternal love but he wasn't spying on him...he was his partner. He actually was only employed (in the loosest sense...i.e. He wasn't paid) by MI6 for a couple of months....ostensibly to spy on Jim McCain of the PIRA (although he sacked that off as well and dealt dope with him)....he was dropped by MI6 after his arrest for the 1979 rock group speaker scam.

He was just let out of the nick cos he was paroled for good behaviour as he became a teacher inside....

You should read the book its very informative
 
The sad thing is i have read his book (quite a few years ago)...(i think i got the BEL stuff from a book about them, so wasn't convinced of it anyway (and probably remembered it wrong too)
 
What did you think of the book Virtual?

Its a really good read...one of my favourite books. He is such a clever guy and could probably have been great at anything he did....he just happened to chose dope dealing lol! ��
 
(what i can remember of it) i enjoyed it - and he comes across as a nice guy - international dope smuggling is a bonus. I seen him do one of his talks not long back too which was interesting (post smoking ban), and he talked about his welsh poetry too. I thought the film was a bit restricted in what it covered though.
