Howard Marks dying of Inoperable Cancer

I thought the film was really disappointing tbh....film adaptations of good books often are. There was too much made up stuff that wasn't even in the book and lots of crucial events were missed out (like his time inside) or mishmashed together.

Never seen him in person although id like to have....provably. Won't get the chance now.

Funny, I was re-reading bits of Dope Stories on Saturday night and it occurred to me that I hadn't read Mr Nice and so promised to do so, I picked up the paper yesterday and read the cancer story went out for a drive walked into a car boot sale and the first book I seen was Mister Nice.
I have read quite a bit of it and must admit to being slightly disappointed, I must admit the Jim McCann bits are funny, but some of it (He is in HK atm) reads like The Memoirs of a Shipping Clerk. I would be wary to give more credence to the accounts presented in the book than say the defence he presented to the court in relation to the importation of Colombian Herb into the Western Isles, it is an entertainment rather than an historical record, even if you must rush read to the entertaining parts. In relation to his early release I will keep my counsel on why that happened and only say it was for a usual reason.

If your party to some info on why he was released early that the rest of us don't know then why not share?

I doubt the feds will swoop down and send you to Guantanamo if you do....

How would Howard cope now though, no real Hash market in the UK anymore. Obvs its about, but the prices! Even bringing in straight from India, Manali, Rasol, Gardaa Temple ball etc, it still wasn't that cheap.

I lurrrve traditional hash, was weaned on the stuff since the early 80's, but compared with the advances in homegrowing since the days when you could only get Jamaican Bush or Swazi brickweed, modern strains blow it out of the water IMO, for me at least it wasn't worth it.

Sorry, I don't have any info, I was speculating about it yesterday and reached an opinion which I don't intend to share, he being a sort of national treasure, but unless he does a Wilko Johnson we may hear more about it soon enough.

Acch, he was a professional bullshitter for a living, you have to be to do what he did, doesn't mean he isn't/ wasn't an honourable man. I don't believe he ever physically hurt anyone or ordered it to be done, sadly those days in that trade are long gone.

So what if a lot is embellished, so what if rumours go about why he was released early( as a dad with 2 kids he did way more time in a US prison than I ever could wether he did anything or not) So he's a better man than me.

I'll just raise a spliff at the end, thank him for the dope and the stories and remember that the truth doesn't exist ;)

His demise in the late 80's certainly coincided with the rise of soap bar, I had never seen bad hash up to that.

In all seriousness though I did find it odd that he got 25 years with the DEA determined that he not be released early or even moved to a lower security or British jail and all of a sudden he's paroled after 7 years...less than a third of his sentence.

He's a famous non rat though so who knows....i do know Ernie Combs now hates him and will have nothing to do with him.

Hmmmm.....

Edit....hes too nice a guy to do anything like that though

You would assume he had something to trade (but there is the secret service connection too) and used that to get out early, maybe he did a wrong thing for a good reason, he did study philosophy so he probably knows his way around an ethical dilemma. I wonder what he would make of a problem I was faced with last year.
I was getting nice weed, professionally packed in heat sealed foil baggies, always on the weight, anyways one night I found a rizzla with some Chinese type characters on it. I was curious so I copied them out and showed them to a Korean friend saying I was thinking of getting them tattooed, what did they mean. He started laughing, he said they were Chinese but they didn't say Sligo Rovers FC they said "Help I am prisoner".

I got a good book out of the library the other week called (rather unimaginative) HASH...Describes in detail the global hash trade and its demise since home grown became so prominent but was also saying that home growers are missing out by not using the remnants to make hash.

The rif mountains of morocco are apparently still thriving but the traditional Spanish importer is being muscled out by serbians and other east Europeans.....according to the book anyway

I think marks connection with the secret service is over played...they disowned him after his arrest.

Interesting story about the rizzla.....its well known that people smugglers use Vietnamese to man homegrow farms....very interesting

Wasn't Hashish by Robert Connel Clarke was it? if so tis a great book and amazing pics. The indian dude who I got my import off was telling me how difficult it is now to get hold of large amounts of good quality. Israeli and Russian mafia buy up most of the harvest before its even planted.

Moroccan landrace strains are being replaced by modern Pak or afghan hybrids for the yeild and potency

Well, to be fair, that was pretty much what he was -- a professional logistician. Just that what he was moving around was "nordle", as opposed to the usual clothing or car parts -- but when the boxes are shut up, it's all pretty much the same anyway.

I also have The Howard Marks Book of Dope Stories -- there are some real gems in there.

The book of dope stories is class....was it you Julie who I was discussing it with the other day re. The guys who rob the chemist and shoot up speedballs made with holy water?

EDIT...I went in the library on the way home but couldn't dins that HASH book...i hate it when I forget something it hurts my little brain grrrrrrr!!

No, that was someone else, but I did like that story. Bloody hell, though, how risky? Filthy used syringes, and I bet holy water isn't usually pasteurised .....
